How about resurrecting this series: Intriguing to watch, and helps greatly to incorporate Black history into American history, whether simple or complex--all of us are so intermingled. Fascinating.
these shows give us some of our American history that we have no other way of finding out.. we learned about lynchings and loyalists in this show. thank you.
Here is a tid-bit about the Nigerian prince story - I worked at a very large postal facility back when this scam was going on. We used to received trays and trays of this scam letter from Nigeria. It was staggering the amount of letters they must've been sending to suck people into this scam.
I love this show!! Timothy Matlack (March 28, 1736 - April 14, 1829) is my 1st cousin 8x removed.....my 6th great grandmother was his cousin Sarah Matlack Rowand..wish I was at this show
My mother is a direct descendant of William Hooper, one of the signers of the American Declaration of I dependence. One branch of her family migrated north to Kingston, Ontario 🇨🇦.
When she said a stowaway from Portugal I knew they were gonna mention Cape Verde. Since I am Cape Verdean from New Bedford. What I found most interesting is he moved to Philly and lived in a boarding house with other CVs. Cuz I thought most of the Cape Verdeans just settled in New Bedford. Very interesting 😊
There are also Family History libraries around the US - some very small and some quite large. When I lived in Phoenix I would go to the family History in Mesa, AZ which was wonderful. Even some of the smaller libraries are able to borrow microfilm from the large library so this is a very good place to start!
I discovered thru Family Search that my 10th cousin is non other than Walt Disney. And he is related to me through my Grandma’s family. Walt’s Grandmother is cousins with my Grandma’s Grandma. Such a cool connection. It would be wonderful to get a nice chunk of the Disney empire. But from what I understand. Walt’s kids will NEVER share a dime.
actually, it seems to be the whites that behaved so evil. there is another historical event where the whites segregated asians too. and then there's also the colonists that came to america and basically stole the land from native americans through violence
Just seen a couple of these shows. I think they're awesome! For this episode though, the lady describing lynching seems to be real animated to express the difference between white folks and black folks. Amazing with the information she was able to provide the man, but real awkward on how she projects the information.
Was the purpose to cremate the body or the boat? So the remains are actually laid to rest in the sea? I don’t know much about Vikings, but I like the idea of being laid to rest at sea so you’re never stuck in one place forever.
The sheriff needed to be ki[[ed in that case ..it was sick what they got away with back then.. What did they think was going to happen and the all white jury was a joke ...the whole South was a mess and in some cases , it still is.. cant imagine what these folks had to go thru and didnt live thru... God help us all if we lose sight of our history , then we will lose everything I fear
You might find assistance at your local library. My little town library doesn't have much but a nearby town has a whole genealogy department. Good luck to you!
@@Lisa-eo9gdI might look into that, thanks for the info. Do they usually have help with finding stuff overseas? I'm struggling a bit now that I've made it all the way back to Germany. I've found my family because I recognize the names buuuut unfortunately trying to decipher old, yellowed, scanned in, hand written forms in a language I don't speak.
I've been able to get back into the 1500s in a few places in my family tree using Ancestry. I have even found documents pertaining to one of my family clans with records going back to 1200. The only place I'm having trouble with international records is in the Dutch line, apparently there was a very bad fire at some point and many many Dutch records were lost forever. It's very difficult to trace Dutch genealogy because of this. Other than that I have not really had any trouble accessing international records through Ancestry though I must admit my family is predominately Scottish and Irish so the records are all in English.
@@Ali_D_Katt My guess is that, if you have documents, anyone who reads the language could help you translate. If I were in that situation, I would ask a foreign student at our nearby university. Best wishes!
I learned when I was really young, that I have Native American blood. But when I questioned my mother, she was in total denial! Well her youngest sister tells me that her mother was Native American. My mother was pail skinned and blue eyes, from her father, but then when I came along
re: that first story, Emily Dickinson is my 7th cousin 5x removed, but via her mother Emily Norcross's line instead of her father's. I think I was just as excited to find out as they were. :)
Oh my goodness! My paternal surname is Whittaker from Grindleton, Yorkshire, England and married in Kennett Chester, Pennsylvania. Would you be willing to share the Whitaker letter?
It’s pretty hard to get real proof when you go back this many years or more. You are probably dealing with a language not English, plus hand written info in various places - church records, etc. It has also been proven that the Vikings did come to North America way before the 1500s.
To have cash ready, on the site, for local expenses. It took weeks to ship cash to North America, and it was risky because all kinds of things could happen to ships.
Some people under 30 really have no clue you don’t do ancestry to find out about black panther’s in the family you start at the library and get educated and surround yourself with older people from the era that were involved and are willing to talk and if you haven’t heard it then it’s probably not apart of your family history because you would have been raised with certain values when your family members are part of certain groups trust I know
I’m a black man and my paternal male ydna is Vikings I-p109 and my moms brother is the I-L22 meaning my maternal granddad leads to Viking as well and this information came from African ancestry lol my heart was so hurt
Thank you, dear Cash, for validating the sick, nauseous🤢🤢🤢 feeling I get when looking at a photo of Joe Manchen. Almost as bad as looking at an image of Trump! 🤢🤢🤢 EstherOfKent 😉
Crazy that tge crown or anyone for that matter believed to have a right to possess or gift those lands to anyone considering those lands didn't even belonged to them in the first place.
Did the husband in the first couple take a DNA test? Paper trail is amazing but it needs to be tied up with DNA otherwise you are just getting information on people who are not even related to you. Follow the DNA not the paper trail!
Love this programme but the genealogists should stick to genealogy and the family rather than making up bits of history of what happened Hollywood style especially around the war of independence
Why did they cancel this series? This needs to be brought back! I absolutely loved this series! One if the best!! Bring it back!!!!!
I agree!!! BRING IT BACK!!!!
I Have the same thoughts. History Detectives was my all time favorite show and they cancelled that show too. What are those TV executives thinking!!
Because they are not taking DNA tests. Many of them must have been getting information on people who aren't even related to them.
Probably a funding issue.
Too many commercials!!!??
I could watch these all day

Love this series. please bring us more. 👍
The story of the African American guy’s family was so horrible, but so beautiful and triumphant to see his family at the end.
Love these genealogists!
I really hope he makes a movie out of the information he received about his family. The World needs to know this.
I love this show!!!!!!❤❤❤
these shows give us some of our American history that we have no other way of finding out.. we learned about lynchings and loyalists in this show. thank you.
Yeah but I am African American we knew lynching. Didn't need no white folks to bring it home. Bye
Billie Holiday Strange Fruit
OK so this one made me cry. We need to keep that story alive so that it never repeats again.
Great show!
Wow, my sister just recently found out that we are also related to Emily Dickinson on my father's side...What a hoot!
Cried my eyes out listening to the LOWMAN history. ❤

In Canada loyalists are referred to Empire Loyalists. Empire referring to the British Empire.
Sickening to hear about how the innocent African Americans suffered under the hands of " the law," back them. Makes me ashamed to be a human being.
actually, it seems to be the whites that behaved so evil. there is another historical event where the whites segregated asians too. and then there's also the colonists that came to america and basically stole the land from native americans through violence
The shame is in not being sickened.

Hennebrys is a name found in Athlone, Ireland. I have a photo of Peter going to USA in 1928. He was on the same boat as my aunt.
That Lowman history is absolutely barbaric.
Strange for a need for an anti-lynching law. But the issue were that the law enforcment didn't do it's job to uphold the law.
The Benidict Arnold story was wild!!!
Viking funerals weren't on burning boats. Wouldn't have been hot enough to cremate bodies according to Ask a Mortified channel.
Ask a Mortician on the Wired channel said the same thing

I would like to contact Doug Barber with information about Penns, I think we found the link. We are Penn family too and have a lot to share.

Dr Mautz was my dentist in Easton MD. He passed a while back. I'm sure this lady is related.

Enjoyable but I'm confused. They took the first guy back to the 1500s but the Vikings settled earlier than that so he still could be Viking, right?

My genealogy tells of my great, great, great, grandfather was hanged for horse theft!! 😮😮
Hmmm. Wonder if the sheriff in the second story had ties to the KKK.
Just to be accurate, 1861 Canadian Census? Canada wasn’t a country till 1867!

There is no genetics to a Viking. From where did the Great Heathen army come from?
The Danelaw.
I hate his made up pronunciations. Linnage, Jinnyology, tenf for “tenth,” north-ampton. Argh!
