I just get down in the pit and am suddenly swarmed by like 40 mobs and cant even fight back lol. Had me reroll a character and got instantly demotivated to continue
Idk Ultimatum in itself is fine, it's just the tuning that's off. Like the boss damage is actually crazy and I almost got oneshot despite doing the trial overleved by 10+ levels. But I definitely prefer Ultimatum over Sanctum for ascending just from a mechanical and design point of view (not necessarily a balance one).
The fact they somehow managed to make ascending WORSE than poe1 ascending is crazy. I always hated lab but it wasnt too too bad. Just a sort of necessary evil. Then i hear theyre going to make ascending far less annoying in poe2. Awesome!! Its astronomically worse... impressively so really. Overleveling for act 2 trial is more or less fine enough but ultimatum is just dumb. Even ignoring the RNG forced mechanics. The mobs are just ridiculous for no reason.
Thanks for the video. I'm made a more melee ice setup but still some good info in here for me. Love watching the vids and the stream on twitch, keep it up!
something i dont see many people talk about is how the mobs path to actively surround you. even if they start in front of you their pathing sends them around you, they dont rush you in a direct line. perhaps the new dodge will help but currently the goal of the game is to surround and kill you
@RickCarleton I want them to run at me, not to actively encircle me with deliberate pathing. If mobs come from different directions, sure, but if 10 monsters are directly in front of me I don't think they should flank me like assassins. Perhaps ok if it's a certain recognisable mob type but it's every single monster currently.
@@a2daj83 mobs have their dimensions and cannot be all at 1 location. It is natural that to reach you they need to be next to the other mobs, so they spread around
@innerg_92 not every build is a freeze/stun build, not every build comes online early, not every build has giga dam/defense early. Simply controlling them or the classic "git gud" during the campaign is just not a solution for most players, especially new players
ice strike feels so much better than flurry for me, and it hits the bell way more consistently. I just put lightning and cold on my weapon so my ice strike can shock and my lightning skills can freeze
I found Ice Strike better for leveling at the very least, since you freeze almost every mob in 1-2 hits.. elites by 3 tops. Especially with 2 winter runes in your weapon.
Yeah freezing just happens so much more consistently with Ice. Shock, even with 100% on my skill and 70% from talents, I can use my ranged move like 5 times and not see a single shock happen. Freeze was just a really consistent buildup and chill applies seemingly everytime. I did figure out to use Ice strike with the lightning Sith Lord Saber move buffing it allows me to freeze everything. 50% freeze chance and 25% attack speed. In that case though, since I am freezing everything by just buffing Ice Strike, why even waste the Ascendency points? Why not go straight to the bottom where crit ignores resists and you get the passive that makes Ice, Lightning and Fire trigger on every crit? There is also the very close 5% dmg to frost on the main tree.
Try a wand in your secondary weapon slot, with power siphon on it. Allows you to easily steal power charges from range without ever having to dive into the enemies.
I play a similar build and I picked the bow nodes since they are near the quarterstaff one and used my weapon swap points for each. That way I can use bell + freezing salvo as an aoe combo it's pretty good and salvo can also help to burst at range when playing mostly with ice strike.
Yeah, ascending is pretty tough right now. Sanctum is palatable even though I didn’t love it in PoE1, but Ultimatum is like pulling teeth. I spent 3 hours trying to clear the tutorial ultimatum last night at 11 levels over the area, and I didn’t end up clearing it. Why would they choose one of if not _the_ rippiest mechanic in the first game as the one to ascend with? It’s really hard to get a set of modifiers that won’t hose you completely, even if you get good objectives and don’t run into too many problematic rares.
the ulmatium bosses especially are giga overtuned. I burnt through 8 of the 7 wave trials (which i only found out didnt actually give my 3rd point after the 8th...) because the bosses all have abilities that are designed to 1 shot you through my 1.5k life, es and 3k mana. One of them does a tornado attack that does like ~2k dps and covers half of the arena and chases you faster than you can run. Had to cheese it with blink as there's no way to avoid it without blink or some other mobility skill. Sanctum bosses on the other hand are very managable and fair (not sure about the 4th floor but 1 2 and 3 are good). But sanctum fucking sucks if you don't have really good max honour + resist relics, with relics it's a complete breeze so you either need to buy a set of relics for several exalts or farm your own. You also need to complete 2nd floor to unlock more relic slots to get better resist. So theres so much prep work to it
So happy that I choose the monk @Mathilification... Act II was a little bit tough at the beginning. But Act III I'm blasting through super quickly, death is no longer a thing. Seems like most monsters don't stand a change against freeze + lightning.
Thanks for the vid. Great content as always. I can't play right now (I'm on a Mac, le sigh) so I'm just checking out streams and vids here and there to get my fill :x
Something that helped me with monk from 1-14 is just using the normal attack with the attack speed support gem, and only using falling thunder if I had power charges. I was struggling on bosses way more than other people by trying to go all in on killing palm/falling thunder, but saw another monk video where the creator said they just used normal attack and bell until they got T5 skills, and once I switched over to that at level 11 or so, I breezed through bosses. I was too focused on what I thought I was supposed to do, and didn't take the time to think about what I could do. I picked up Ice Strike at lvl 14, am now at lvl 19, and I've just been decimating everything. I got pretty lucky and got a quarterstaff with +42% elemental damage, and that's probably been carrying me.
I went the Ice Strike route, with both Heralds, Combat Frenzy, and now even Ghost Shrouds for a severely underrated defense layer (thanks to a high spirit amulet). Very tanky setup, even in SSF! Starting to get into very respectable Evasion numbers now, and took two large Evasion clusters with a high EV chest. But the real star is Shattering Palm; that skill is so good for gap closing. Lastly i have Charged Staff with Bind, Knockback and Maim support, since Ice Strike does enough damage. Blind is super strong, even if you only sport ~55% evasion. As soon as i get my third and forth (lmao, as if) Ascendancy i will go for the spirit and defensive nodes as well.
I started using the lightsaber really early in act 3. The way i sustained charges was using "Profane ritual", just placing it on dead enemies and it gave me the charges. Had the 40% duration support on it and always got my charges back before it ran out no issue.
You should try (courtesy of milkybk) cast on shock with profane ritual for power charge constant uptime. I run 5 power charges but can run 7, and have permanent uptime on charged staff as well as the ability to dump with thunder for huge aoe and damage.
@alejandrohayling8381 no, you have to manually do your own shock and power charge generation with siphon strike for bosses with no adds. But this is assuming you're at maps, for which it works a treat
Monking with almost same setup actually except im a chayula guy. Extra chaos from flames here and there as well as mana leech feel nice to play around. Also planning to get insta leech for mana and mana leech is applied to es - will allow getting insane defenses from chip damage. Your approach has definitely more damage but I'm aimed for more well rounder
Ok but real talk - the area design of maps is AWESOME. I cannot get enough of PoE 2's art. But if ya'll find Sanctum and Ultimatum trials toxic (which they are) - wait until we get ToTa as the 3rd one.

Weird. First person ive seen praise the area design. Some of them look cool but theyre way too big for how much back tracking you have to do. Base MS needs to be faster tbh. Maybe like a 15% inc would feel good without being crazy
Hey Mathil one thing I noticed is that some stats carry over from your second weapon so you can use it as a stat stick. I haven't done a ton of testing but definitely +stats (int, dex, str) seem to stay when swapping, but +melee skills and things like that do not. Just a suggestion, might be worth looking into what is best to put on your alternate weapon.
Currently building a cold damage stormweaver battlemage using a quarterstaff + wand and focus. I plan on going double shocks with all damage can shock, and then stacking exposure with frost bomb and frost bite. Im hoping the shocks+exposure will result in some crazy damage!
Thanks for voicing concerns over ascendancy trials, atm it feels awful. while i don't think it should be delivered on a platter, things like sanctum is very unfriendly to slow builds, or even build cancelling if you're doing thorns, a single death and you have to restart the whole thing should be punishment enough. Just like how POE1 does it
Agree get rid of trials for ascendency. They are just sucky, or make a checkpoint to boss once you get there. I’m fine dying but I hate running everything over and over to get to a boss
Definitely need some ascendency trials that are more tied into the normal game loop so people's builds and skills that are required are matched up with the rest of the game properly.
@bazdarinothebizier9085 you don't have proof that I'm wrong either. I'm not going looking through multiple years old videos for some random a-hole debutant
Once you get to monster lv75 you can get sanctum and ultimatum coins with 4 floors and 10 trials which in their description specifically say it's going to give you ascendancy points for completing, not sure how many ascendancies we get, cause that makes 5?
I've found myself some uniqe hands that make all lightning dmg proc electrecute. Makes power charges trivial. Charged staff does a lot more dmg too if you go up t6 max charges.
I found a ring that gives me an extra skill gem slot, so I threw hand of chayula in there with freezing mark and voltaic mark. I'm only level 51 but I'm blowing through areas to get to endgame now

Nice. I use a very similar build and i love it. I just have a bit of an issue with power charges generation. What do you use exactly to freeze enemies?
with his ascendancy giving him extra damage as cold even when he uses lightning skills the attacks have a chance to freeze. With tons of attack speed and crit that happens often in this kind of build
Thanks for the answer, i wanted to know the exact thing as OP said. It still sounds weird to me that just a bit of cold damage allows to proc freeze even on shock skills. I thought you needed at least a solid ice skill but...apparently not. Herald of ice + some freeze build up nodes on the tree should help as well. Am i right? Gonna try this evening. Also, what about to go full electrocute to gain charges, therefore completely avoid ice? I d love to. Still not sure how to proc electrocute@@AtomGaimz
Ascendency node 35% meta energy build up, take cast on shock with profane ritual and you will have permanent charges. It's tons more fluid than trying to manually get charges with shock siphon or killing palm
@@lucagenovese7207 - There is a support gem to convert some lightning damage into electrocution, but it tanks the overall damage with 40%. I am currently doing that, but I assure you it's nothing like getting charges from freezing enemies. Freezing is 100% more reliable at generating charges for you, than electrocution at least in my opinion.
@daxzys tyvm, i see! Now i just need to figure out a reliable way to freeze, like is there a specific skill/node tree, or just cold damage...or a mix of these?
Monk could go CI with the ghost shroud aura , he's basically the trickster of poe2, also why not invest into the power charge nodes ? the charged staff duration and flat lightning damage benefits a lot from power charges , and power charges themselves have some good bonus to crit dmg bonus and chance of when u gain a power charge to gain max charges instead , so maximum sustain there. Imo the quarterstaff nodes are kinda meh , so many points to invest in there, could grab the nodes of attack speed 1% * 15 dex
charges do not have inherent benefits in poe2 like they had in poe1... no bonus to crit with power charges in poe2... charges only help activate other skills in one way or another... investing in more power charges does nothing becuase u have 100% uptime of charged staff with just the combat finisher and the base 3 power charges.... the flat lightning damage is nice but u need to invest around 10-12 passive points in the tree for the power charges... imo not worth it, when u can invest those points into getting a better defensive layer...
Thats fine, just come back when you’re stronger, I went at 22 almost killed it but was annoying .”, decided to not waste time and went back at 30, breeze through the boss
Hey Mathil, super helpful info and guidance on Monk, thx buddy. Out of interest have you found a way to make 'attack whilst in place' to work, specifically with Tempest Flurry when using Charged Staff? There is an option in the menu and an option per skill in the skills panel, but neither seem to do anything for this specific combo, ta
I think having one of the ranged attacks is not really optional - especially in sanctum, if you dont have a way to safely deal ranges damage you are toast
I think you are better of scalling only lightning or cold because of the top of the tree nodes and for example if you play lightning the one near the start that gives a bit of lightning as extra cold for example to get a bit of freeze anyway. I planed to go only 1 herald for my monk but I stopped the game too early because I was bored.
I think part of the dissonance with these trial mechanics, outside of them being overtuned, comes from an imbalance of time and risk. If the risk is high the time sink should be low, if the risk is low the time sink should be high. The old system was long but worked because the risk was relatively low. Overall, I like the idea narratively. It's cool to imagine your character going through this process to achieve a higher state of power, and I think that it's important to what GGG is trying to achieve with these systems. I have three separate suggestions for changing the ascendancy mechanic to achieve both narrative weight and better balance between time and risk. 1. (Low Risk/Low Time) You choose a trial type to ascend and complete it. You have achieved ascension and thus are given ascendancy passive points at specific level thresholds. 2. (Low Risk/ High Time) Each trial's ascendancy points are put at the same sign post. You get the points for each trial at the SAME point of progressively higher tier trials. Floor 1 of T1, T2, T3, and T4 Sekhama Trial or Challenge 4 of a 4, 6, 8, and 10 challenge Ultimatum. With this, you still should encounter a bit more difficulty by virtue of the zone being of higher level and you have the allure of playing through further for more rewards but do not have to. 3. (Low Time/High Risk) Move the first boss encounter that gates access to ascendancy to the front of the run as a gate keeper. After some tuning, the bosses could function as a sign post that you can access quickly behind which the ascendancy points and access to the rest of the trial is gated. If you want access to the true rewards of the endgame system you have to be able to pass through the gates of a difficult encounter. For all three, the in game systems are retained as optional endgame content with unique rewards. Narratively, your character has glimpsed that there is more to these trials through the rewards they can gain outside of just proving themselves in the eyes of those who created them and achieving a higher state of power.
Nah, i love the trials, they are also a great test of how your build is shapimg up. I do however think that the honor one should NOT have been the first trial,as you are SOOOO heavily punished for even the tiniest mistake, and new players especially are roadblocked much more than experienced players.
@@andybanan1992 I also like them how they are because I like both Sanctum and Ultimatum, but I still think the bosses are overtuned lol. Glad you're having fun too!
@evilfiendish9787 really the only change that needs made to trials is maybe making the limit the mod pools of the quest versions so you don't just get unlucky and get the near impossible mods, or nerf those mods a bit

Thank god mathil has this opinion on ascendancy trials. I completely agree. Ritual and Sanctum required for ascending is just straight up ass and not fun
I think its fine, i like sanctum, however 3-4 floors for ascending is stupid. There is no way the time effort of going from normal lab to uber lab scales the same as going from 1 floor sanctum to 4 floors.
i would not recommend going lightning with electrocude, ice is much better, its safer, and it does the same dps, only it is much easier to just freeze everything and proc combat frenzy that way. Also, please, get the evasion node on the ascendancy first, I can't express how amazing it is enough.
They put quarterstaffs and unarmed specializations right across from each other so they'd be good candidates to use weapon passives if you're building with more palm skills.
Why not invest in a little bit of strength, put a Herald of Fire on with a spirit chest piece and get your free extra 30% damager from that proccing overkills? Dunno if it cancels anything else but it solves needing fire damage for mobbing at least
I’m missing how the tempest flurry is freezing. Great build btw. I switched to this and I can freeze with fist obviously and bell. Bust can’t figure out how flurry is freezing.
So now the patch has dropped and completely ruined us, what are your thoughts and what are up-coming plans mate? You're probably right mate! But this is PoE. Anything is possible :P Just been testing a bit more and Ice Strike seems to be the go-to. Gemmed properly it's damage is solid and it's power charge gain is fast still. Was hoping we could still play at ranged, but guess it's up close n personal from now on xD
The ascendency thing is very scuffed, the first 2 are fine for an intro to the mechanic but 3 and 4 is just lol, maybe it should've been a special map with a boss at the end that you unlock as you progress the atlas, that would be more in line with the endgame.
So you don’t bother investing in max power charges or anything. I was for the big crit nodes they offer and buffs seems to be working well for me. Hoping to get flicker online and cap my charges pretty high
Sanctum and ultimatum are fine CHOICES for league mechanics. But they generally lend themselves towards very specific builds. Sanctum being more safe, totem, ballista, etc type builds. Ultimatum being hyper tanky to shrug off all the negative BS it throws at you. They are in no way compatible with being forced on every single player just to ascend. Lab was dumb but this is so much worse
When first i saw 8 skills on the panel, i thought it wiuld be like lost ark where you rotate skills and each class will be more engaging and interesting. Turns out it's still the first PoE, press forward and 1 skill button.
So Coursing Current and Herald of Thunder. Does it actually work? Herald is 'Payoff', and its description states that it benefits from a particular status effect (here, shock). It then states that the skill can't apply the effect it benefits from. So current wouldn't ever trigger because herald can't shock, no?
Why does your lightning furry have so many follow up ligtning strikes?? Mine hits just the one time. Yours seems to hit like..all over the place with bigger strikes lol. Given, i am only level 40. But dang. Goes crazy. I think its the herald of lightning

Its astronomically worse... impressively so really. Overleveling for act 2 trial is more or less fine enough but ultimatum is just dumb. Even ignoring the RNG forced mechanics. The mobs are just ridiculous for no reason.
Sanctum is bad too. How are melee going to clear 3floor of sanctum without having +10lv advantages
Thanks for the video. I'm made a more melee ice setup but still some good info in here for me. Love watching the vids and the stream on twitch, keep it up!
WOW That's an amazing guide Mathil! , I wish all content creators were as good as you :)
Thank you for this build, you have made me have more fun in this game
something i dont see many people talk about is how the mobs path to actively surround you. even if they start in front of you their pathing sends them around you, they dont rush you in a direct line. perhaps the new dodge will help but currently the goal of the game is to surround and kill you
So... the mobs are doing their job? Good. You want them to 1v1 you instead?
@RickCarleton I want them to run at me, not to actively encircle me with deliberate pathing. If mobs come from different directions, sure, but if 10 monsters are directly in front of me I don't think they should flank me like assassins. Perhaps ok if it's a certain recognisable mob type but it's every single monster currently.
@@a2daj83 mobs have their dimensions and cannot be all at 1 location. It is natural that to reach you they need to be next to the other mobs, so they spread around
@@a2daj83 then get better at controlling them lmao
@innerg_92 not every build is a freeze/stun build, not every build comes online early, not every build has giga dam/defense early. Simply controlling them or the classic "git gud" during the campaign is just not a solution for most players, especially new players
For me personally best poe content creator! Love you mate and your builds are awesome as always!
ice strike feels so much better than flurry for me, and it hits the bell way more consistently.
Thanks a lot Sir Monk, much appreciated 🙏🏽🔥
Thank you so much. It was easy to understand as I am new to poe2. Keep it up👍
Try a wand in your secondary weapon slot, with power siphon on it. Allows you to easily steal power charges from range without ever having to dive into the enemies.
what? Frenzy from Ranger + the node that turns frenzy charges into power charges means he never has to worry about generating power charges.
@ this was week 1 bro. lol
I play a similar build and I picked the bow nodes since they are near the quarterstaff one and used my weapon swap points for each. That way I can use bell + freezing salvo as an aoe combo it's pretty good and salvo can also help to burst at range when playing mostly with ice strike.

another thing you can potentially look into for this build is charge infusion, if you can sustain the power charges its 20% more crit
So theres so much prep work to it
Loving my Titan but will be giving Monk a go after, this looks amazing!
So happy that I choose the monk @Mathilification... Act II was a little bit tough at the beginning. But Act III I'm blasting through super quickly, death is no longer a thing. Seems like most monsters don't stand a change against freeze + lightning.
I'm using staggering palm for my gap closer because it also provides another projectile if you use it on enemies with a prime for stun (gold glow).
Thanks for the vid. Great content as always. I can't play right now (I'm on a Mac, le sigh) so I'm just checking out streams and vids here and there to get my fill :x
thanks for this dude, this helped a ton.
I love the dedication, every time he's gonna talk about his character he uses the fit 😂

@@yash19842 Didnt struggle much, dropped the bell and played frost strike for freeze too.
You should try (courtesy of milkybk) cast on shock with profane ritual for power charge constant uptime. I run 5 power charges but can run 7, and have permanent uptime on charged staff as well as the ability to dump with thunder for huge aoe and damage.
doesnt work on bosses
@alejandrohayling8381 no, you have to manually do your own shock and power charge generation with siphon strike for bosses with no adds. But this is assuming you're at maps, for which it works a treat

Ok but real talk - the area design of maps is AWESOME. I cannot get enough of PoE 2's art.

I enjoyed the trials, felt challenging and pretty fun.
I rushed "...And Protect Me From Harm" and assembled full trickster with ghost dance, spectral ward, and subterfuge mask. It works good.
THERE IS NO WAY to do the trial of S as a Warrior - after like 12 tries, I just had to skip it.. :( And continue the campaign without my ascendancy
I went back after leveling 12times and with a new weapon
Or just ask someone for help with it.
I think having one of the ranged attacks is not really optional - especially in sanctum, if you dont have a way to safely deal ranges damage you are toast
this build looks so potent
Glad you're having fun too!
i am so glad that you're not a game designer because those are the worst idea i've ever heard, that is even worst than what we currently have.

People hated Ultimatum until they learned to love it. The Chads at GGG understand that the masses must be taught what is fun

I like sanctum but the problem is that you need a specific style of build to do jt
