This is not a new idea. In fact that's basicaly the way old traditional wood stoves were made. A cylindrical container on 3 legs, divided in two parts, top and bottom, and an opening on top for the fumes.
So it is realy easy to convert an old electric water heater into a stove, and the way I show in the video is quite representative of the way craftsmen used to make them back in the day. (they just didn't use water heaters but actual metal parts made for this purpose)
Measure the hight of the lower part and cut it. That will be the ash tray on the bottom. As I show, it can be removable to empty the ashes.
The top part will be the combustion chamber, and we're gonna need a door to insert the wood. I made the door about 15cm high, which is a good average. You don't need it to be too big. You can either make the hinge with metal parts and rods, like I did, or you can put ready made hinges. The choice is yours. Both options will work fine.
In order to be able to attach the ash tray to the top part, you'll need some kind of guide to help fit it in the correct position, that's why I cut and weld that metal strip around the bottom of the top part.
That is our fitting guide for the ash tray, and as you can see the method of attachment is realy easy. I made a bayonet type attachment, but you can devise any other method of attaching the ash tray. There's realy plenty of ideas.
And finally you can weld the three legs to finish the project.
In my case the opening of the water heater is exactly the dimentions to fit inside the flue, so I was lucky with this. Other water heaters may have different openings so you may need to form them differently.
The openings around the door are enough to allow air enter the stove, so you don't realy need any more openings. But if you see that you need more, you can make holes around the lower part.
In order to weld the galvanized metal sheet you'll have to grind it a bit and weld 2 or 3 times.
You will also need to fire it up outside the house at first, and let it burn a lot, so that the outer paint is burned and removed, and then you can paint it with heat resistant paint. Just be careful of the fumes.
The metal devider inside is 3 mm metal sheet. I cut it in shape and used the grinder to make notches to allow the ashes to fall in the tray.
    Simple and effective.
