- For car companies, finding a name for a new vehicle can be a challenge. Well maybe Volkswagen found the easy solution or just got lazy?
It's corporate name was the VW Type181 but when it was launched in 1968 it was simply called the Thing.

i so would love to see VW bring back this body style with all modern tech
I pulled a 15 foot bass boat with my type 181 thing . Fun car . No worse than being on a motorcycle. You had to careful when driving it no airbags. It was based off the would war two German car which had a machine gun in the back of it during the war . This car in 1973 was extremely expensive to buy. A little over $3000.00 dollars back then. A regular VW bug was about $1900.00 dollars then. I had a lot of fun driving this car .people would smile and wave at me a lot. Never a dull moment driving it.😊😅
I had a 1973 VW thing. It had the gas fired heater in it from the factory. This heater would run off the cars gas tank for its fuel to heat up the car inside . The manual which i still have said it would burn a gallon of gas every 7 hours. You didn't have to start the car in cold weather. Just turn the knob on the dashboard for instant heat . It run off a electric fuel pump
I was born in 1881, sorry 1981. Class of
32. Years. I. Was. A high. School. Senior.

Yeah, until you find yourself in an accident with another car, or just a moped.
@@HenningDiesel same as any other 60/70’s Vw then 😂

Yes, but a windshield and a roof should give you a little bit more protection than this bathtub on wheels.
@@HenningDiesel have you ever seen a split screen after a front ender. There worse trust me. These things are quite solid. But yeah i wouldnt want to roll one. But tbh there to slow to get rolled. But i get your point. Not the safest car but stil
A Cool classic IMO 🤙🏼
Have a happy new year my friend
