- The Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council says a letter sent out by the Six Nations Band Council was out of line. The letter states that the Elected Band Council is the only legitimate governing body in the area, something the Confederacy Council says is a lie.
Chief Roger Silversmith was emotional this morning, "people seem to think that they can do what they want with our treaties, laws, and our customs... it gets hard, speaking, doing this, it brings tears inside."
The letter was posted online and is meant to clear the so-called confusion about who to consult for proposed developments in the territory and goes on to say that the law is clear that the Six Nations Band Council is in charge.
The Confederacy Chiefs Council says they were blindsided by the statement released earlier this month but they say, they suspect they know why the band council wants to assert its dominance.
The Confederacy Chiefs Council is a more traditional form of Indigenous government and it doesn't recognize the elected council, and neither do many of the Haudenosaunee people.
"They adopt provincial policies, that's what their role is. Our role is different. Our role is the welfare of our people, culture."
The Confederacy Chiefs Council says they must be included in talks for proposed developments, unlike the letter suggests.
CHCH News reached out to the Six Nations Band Council for an interview about the letter but have not yet heard back.
I'll accept whoever the clan mothers appoint to leadership not some canadian rez government.
Be nice to hear what is being said
Who even are the “band council”?
How is there 2 forms ?.. confusing..
Canada forced the band council on the folks living at Six Nations in 1924 by having the RCMP invade them and hold an election where as few as 26 men voted. Before this, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council (Grand River division) had been the only governing body at Six Nations.
Late response, but there's the elected chiefs which are chosen to run by the government- they're only really "elected" in the sense they're the only ones on the ballot, and then there's the confederacy chiefs which have their power via inheritance and the trust of their people's. It's a very complicated subject.
I'd love to hear more details. Or at least to understand where you could read more about the topic. What is the difference between these two "governments"?
Can someon explain what happend? I did not understood a thing
Is there an update on this
elected council is to count the Haudenosaunee for when the canadians round them up again
First of all. Kahriwíio'stensera(Code of Handsomelake Religion) was adopted by Christianity and it was NEVER ACCEPTED WITHING KAIÁNEREH'KO:WA. Secondly this newly formed council doesn't even speak to the Clan Families it's a DISGRACE.
Time to smokem peace pipe
Given that much of America's government structure is based on the Six Nations Confederacy, this is no laughing matter, and serious news ! With all the destabilization in the world today, this is kind of scary. Democracy is in retreat all over the world and under threat. It always seemed that at least, the Six Nations are stable. I hope that this is resolved soon in a good way. Especially because bad things from overseas are heading this way. And people must get ready to deal with this. Divide and conquer is a tactic still used by Neoliberals and Europe, and of course they'll try to get people within tribes to argue among themselves. As well as tribes against each other, so a united front is really needed like never before.
