You guys are so wholesome! 💕I am sorry you had to experience such a terrible deed. Addis always had opportunist hyenas since its founding. I've read on "Fikir Eske Mekabir" (may be you've heard of it, it's a revered novel in Amharic literature) that even back in the 1920s and 30's people (merchants, deacons) traveling from Gojjam would be warned of the "Aradas", who used to assault and rob or as you mentioned pickpocket new comers. It's an unavoidable plague of every metropolitan city. But the Gov't could do better at hunting for the culprits and making the punishment for such crimes as sever as can be. Anyways I'm glad you survived and I got to see you here. Peace & Love!
Wow, thank you for sharing that. No I haven’t heard of it but I’ll ask my dad and husband. Yes the police could do that. I’m grateful to be able to speak about it after the fact. Thank you for your support ❤️🥰🥰
Pas de problème du tout. Vous ne savez jamais si vous finissons par visiter ou quelqu’un d’autre que vous connaissez.Insh’Allah rien de tel ne se passe
Oh no, I'm so sorry that you had this experience. But it's good that you are able to share it with us. It could of been so much worse. Being a ferengi (European) there is little chance to blend in, so almost become a target for gangsters. I've had a few experiences mostly in your neighbouring country of Kenya where crime is much more violent than Ethiopia. The trauma does get easier over time. I agree with you that thanks be to God, we are here and able to share our experiences. But I would rather share positive memories, as it is one or two rotten apples amongst a whole big orchard of beautiful fruit, that try to spoil things. Is it still difficult to get a local sim card in Ethiopia? You used to have to register with Telecom first if you a ferengi, which took a long time. (I gave up on my last visit) Not everyone is lucky enough to have a phone. Happy travels, and stay safe. May you both be blessed 🙏
You’re right. Absolutely could have been worse! Thank God. I am also sorry to hear you’ve had such negative experiences abroad. It’s good to acknowledge to spread awareness, but not focus on it. As for the SIM, you do still have to go to the Telecom, present a passport and get one registered to use but it’s not even $2 and takes 15mins depending on the line.
Crazy story ukhti......but I noticed you said that you had a language barrier when you were in the van........so did you learn Afar recently? Im asking cause my wife is Afar from Djibouti and Ive been trying to pick up a few words here and thier......so Im just wondering how long it took you to learn?? Or did you mean Amharic cause it was in Addis??? Salaams
Yess very good question brother and Mashallah to your and your wife Mabrouk! I meant Amharic. I couldn’t understand even the basics of Amharic so it was hard to understand. Qafar Af I learned in my household from young, but going back home you realize there are so many different dialects and some don’t understand others. Salaams! Thank you for your support as well

My brothers in Ethiopia have abandoned the Afar language to the profile of the Amhari language. That's a shame. I'm really sorry but it annoys me to see someone who has never left their country has a problem expressing themselves in the Afar language.
Yi saqalo.. It is comments like this that make Daoud anxious to even speak. The idea of people online feeling so free to judge without any regard for impact. The shame is not Daoud who has never abandoned his language and I actually credit him to why I have been able to improve so much. The shame is within our regional government being the ONLY region in Ethiopia to not require our native language to be taught in schools, not required as a working language, not required to employ native speakers and instead invites people from any other region, people who are never told to learn so locals end up speaking Amharic everywhere. The shame you mention and annoyance you feel is misdirected brother.
