Toxoplasmosis - Plain and Simple

  • Get to know toxoplasmosis with a smile on your face!
    A few notes:
    (Watch the video first or you won’t have a clue what I’m talking about.)
    • Don’t mistake Toxoplasma for Toxocara. The latter is a common parasitic roundworm.
    • Dogs can’t infect people with toxoplasmosis unless you eat their raw meat! They can only act as intermediate hosts which means that they never shed oocysts in their feces.
    • Fecal examination is not a very helpful tool when it comes to screening cats for toxoplasmosis. Since the duration of shedding oocysts is so short, you’ll likely get a negative result which will leave you in the dark regarding the toxoplasma status of the animal. Furthermore, there are other harmless parasites producing very similar looking oocysts, that when present, give a false positive result.
    • The things said about feline AIDS can be applied to people and HIV as well. Toxoplasmosis is one of the infections that can give AIDS-patients a very hard time.
    • When talking about „messed up” immunity I should also mention „low” immunitiy against toxoplasma specifically. If a cat acquires a natural infection but isn’t exposed to toxoplasma again for a long time (years), its protection can decline. This does not lead to cysts activating or spontaneous reshedding of oocysts but in case of a brand new infection, some cats may produce a low number of oocysts. The level of anti-toxoplasma immunity can also be measured with the blood test.

    This is a great video on Toxoplasmosis. I had a latent infection flare up after starting chemotherapy treatments back in December of 2017. I developed Ocular Toxoplasmosis, and because my blood tests all came back negative for Toxo, I did not get on the proper treatment until it was too late. I am now blind in my left eye, and I am currently on a double dose of Bactrim to treat it. Although Toxo is not uncommon, and many people do carry it, due to my situation I have come to believe that there should be more awareness of it, and perhaps more testing for people who are immunocompromised. Had I been tested prior to starting chemotherapy, I could have been treated ahead of time and likely would still have sight in my left eye. I do think this video has taught me more about Toxo than even the doctors who are treating me know, so I am very happy that I came across it!

    I don't know why there are comments full of hate over here. I am personally a cat lover and neither toxoplasmosis nor any other parasite transmitted by cats has made me love them any less. You just need to take the right measures when dealing with a cat and have an attentive eye on any risk like the video says.. just do the tests.
    Besides that, I am a medical student and this is THE BEST parasitology video I've seen on youtube. Genuinely enjoyed watching it. ;) stay awesome !

      @J.D Maya I think it's the case that if the cat has just caught tox and is shedding the ooocysts, theoretically if you changed the litter, got cat poo on your fingers, then put your fingers in your mouth, you might get infected if you're not already immune.

    So i got diagnosed with Toxo years ago... I own 2 cats. And soon after had a pregnant wife. After about $1.2k both cats were tested and negative!... In the meantime (upon me realising it wasnt an eyelash in my eye but was something more serious.... ie thousands of dots) i lost 70% of my eyesight in my right eye in 30 Hrs. The bug had worked its way via my blood stream to the back of my eye and was eating away and causing "floaters". The first 3 Drs all told me it was from my cats. The final Dr who was the most prominent Dr in Australia for Toxo said the cat theory was completely over exaggerated. And that by far the more likely cause of it was eating under cooked meat ;) My holiday destinations are definitely the cause... Not my cats :) And ive had 2 relapses... And i can tell pretty quickly as my attention span is 0 and i get angry very quick... As soon as that happens i go back to the Drs and they sort out the issue before it takes off again

    • @bosslady1914
      @bosslady1914 5 лет назад +2

      Oh my goodness, really?? Thank you for sharing your experience, because I read about it crossing the blood brain barrier and messing with eyesight, I'm freaked out! So you've had relapses, does that mean you didn't fully get rid of the parasite at first? How is it treated?

    • @edvardthomson7264
      @edvardthomson7264 5 лет назад +1

      @@bosslady1914 I've had 2 relapses. Both times I realised early (within 2 days) and went straight to the specialist where they put me on steroids for 10 weeks. Initial treatment was steroid needle to eye then oral pills for 10 weeks. Treatment the following 2 X was just oral tablets. I was told for the average person infected it re appears twice. So hopefully I'm done! The reason I notice it is I get very short attention span and very angry. On both occassions I just thought it was best to leave work and chill... Then still the same the next day so I knew it back. When in the eye it would eat away at the back of it and all the loose parts would float around at the back of my eye and get magnified and look huge in my vision.... Crazy...
