I am 70 years old and I will listen to Marvin Gaye to the day I leave this earth he was one of the greatest musicians there was he was on top of things when people weren't it was such a shame the way he died but I will continue to listen to Marvin forever
I know, right? You'd think it' a love song from the melody and Gaye's gentle vocals, at least I thought that as a kid. But when you actually listen to the lyrics its about a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
I was in Sacramento, Calif. in the late 60's and young blacks, 14 and 15 were fighting everyone, whites, mexican, asian, everyone. Here was a let of racial tension and blacks had "had" enough. It was horrible, for young school kids and all having to go to war instead of learning. Then, real-late 60's into 70's protest songs started to emerge. But then, one that seemed to calm things down by a huge and noticeable difference in America, was Marvin's "MERCY MERCY ME"!! Blew everybody's mind, I left Calif. but I' ll never forget those times and this song. More folks aught to listen to oldies more often, songs were cleaner then and actually had a messege. Ol Marvin.
ME!!!!!!!!!!!Have been, since it FIRST came out!!!!! I grew UP, in the 70s, man. The Best, the Best, the Best!!! Marvin had a deeeeep, Prophetic gift!!!! The devil tried to stop him, through the HORRIBLE ABUSE, he suffered from his father, as a child!!!! Oh my God!!! Have Mercy on us!! We know NOT what we do!!!!!
This protest song from Marvin brought Motown into the fray of the day... war, ecology, human rights... and he did it against the wishes of the Motown bosses. A brave move and done with such class!! Miss you Marvin and all the others who lost out to drugs and booze and the pressures of success. RIP BROTHER!!
I'm 60 now, & Marvin still brings a tear to my eye with this song. Absolutely years before any of this became public knowledge. We lost a legend when Marvin was so cruelly taken. RIP XX
This is one of those songs that should be played on Earth Day, or everyday. Maybe it will make people know about the damage mankind is/has been doing to nature & to ourselves. Thank you, Marvin.
Wow, you think the earth is clean, blah blah blah. You are an idiot. I would suggest a basic course in Science, but it's beyond your comprehension. Go visit Alaska & measure the ice cap to see how they've melted. But I simply don't care what people like you think. When an ecological catastrophe happens, you too will be affected & die off. If the great Marvin Gaye were alive today he would not be in your ignorant camp. You see he was an intelligent, brilliant talented human being.
Anyone can write about science, but from your comments you lack basic understanding of our environment, as well as any scientific knowledge and the damage man has done to this planet. If you believe all that excrement you just wrote then you probably believe in ghosts, fairies, god, mermaids and the like, you fool. Go live in Uranus.
Why do you even come to listen to Marvin Gaye if you deny environmental and Earth science? The things he speaks of in this song are still true. "Fish full of mercury." If you think that's gotten better, then eat higher than the recommended amount of Tuna on a regular basis....but then, you're already pretty dumb, so you may have already been over exposed to mercury. Scientists figured out that adding C02 to the atmosphere would cause The Earth to warm as far back as the 40s and 50s. By 1980 the great planetary scientists Carl Sagan, who figured out that the greenhouse effect was responsible for the high surface temperatures on Venus in the 60s, and others, began sounding the alarm that temperatures were starting to rise as a result, long before the idea ever entered the political sphere. Greenland is melting, the arctic sea ice is shrinking, not expanding, threatening polar bears with extinction in the near future. Antarctica's ice sheet has expanded during winters, but measurements of the deep ice over the land show that it's melting away irreversably, and NASA says that the loss of ice in the Arctic greatly surpasses the expansion in the Antarctic winters. Antarctica is a very different place than the Arctic, since it has a great land mass covered in ice, which as it melts off into the ocean during the summer actually cools the surrounding water. Besides the C02 problem there are also feedback loops associated with melting of white reflective ice exposing more dark ocean which heats up more and melts more ice....as well as others such as the release of methane (CH4) a more potent gas than C02 as the permafrost continues to melt. Also slash and burn farming in the world's rain forests causes of peat fires that last for years - releasing hundreds of thousands of years of stored carbon as well as killing off the means of it's storage, the trees. There is a giant cloud of C02 coming off of Malaysia and Indonesia as this method of plantation farming has consumed 80 percent of the rain forests there. I don't know what possesses me to attempt to reach strangers who have clearly abandoned reason, but there it is. These are all facts that any intelligent person can find the data on for themselves. You don't have to take anyone's word for it. If you're writing about science, you should stop, because you don't know what you're talking about. Clearly you're not educated in science.
I don´t deny environmental science. I believe in climate change at the hand of mankind. I´m a scientist who happens to love Marvin´s music and the fact that through this song he gave light to a very important subject.
This song brought tears to my eyes this morning 7:47am April 8, 2018. I remember it playing on the radio every morning when My Mom got me ready for school in 1st grade '70 - '71 & I didn't understand the meaning back then but it's such a Powerful song. I miss My Mom & I miss Marvin RIH ❤
The words about the ecology in this song is still the same. In fact it worse now. Marvin Gaye was a man of great knowledge. He threw in our faces the problems of the country. God bless him. He is still missed by many, many people.

Just turned 65, who would I've been without Marvin's songs all these years. This is his best in my opinion. Well hell, all his music is so inspirational. Thanks to Marvin, a man that brought a generation together in the day and generations together today.
An all time classic that brings me to tears now days. Considering the dreams and visions we had growing up, time some how got altered and we are now heading the wrong way. Yet as an aging Hippie, i still have to believe we can still turn things around.

***** that won't solve anything. Killing people? Come on man have some common sense. That's just more of a reason of why she's hurt...our man made operations is whats hurting her, were not using the resources or technology properly. Were human beings we have love in our hearts. We have to rebuild the earth not destroy it by depopulation.
***** overpopulation is a myth. You say where will we put them? Dude look around you there's plenty of space for another 6billion. What you don't realize is that were crowded into cities (society)...we dont live freely anymore is what that part of the song meant. That's why you get the theory of over population .because you yourself are crammed into those cities surrounded by millions.
@Tayz Yeah. That's the thing. This song is both sung, arranged and performed beautifully by Marvin and the musicians. It's got simultaneously so much swing, funk, and beauty. However is has such a sincere message in all it's songs as well. Most usually have one or the other, but rarely hit it out of the park with both, such as on this album.
Marvin, a musical genius/ phrophet of our time. He saw into the future. His songs are as applicable today as they were when they were first recorded. Surely it has all come to past.

Most Amazing song ever for today. Especially for our world is today, June, 2020. Not over Covid and another virus - the world. I thought about George Floyd the entire time and listen to this song. Especially, watch the video. Nobody like Marvin! Love you Marvin
Mournfully passionate. Marvin sings with an odd combination of beauty and despair. The bouncy music makes me want to dance. The somber lyrics make me want to cry. He was truly one of the best.
He was one of the best. I remember when I lived up in Michigan and on the tv they said he was shot by his Dad. I cried that night. So sad, but, we will always have the music. Great man!
Words well spoken. When I hear the ending It makes me think of GODS Angels crying over this Sin sick world. Marvin Gaye was truly a Genius. GOD blessed him with this masterpiece.
He does an awesome job with this song with his very own signature on it ! The Bee Gees are awesome in their original cut of the song ! Lord knows we have a lot of incredible talent in the USA !!
WOW. !!! Was this guy ahead of his time. This should be the standard bearer for climate change. I appreciated this song back in the day , but it is more relevant right now. Great job !
Marvin was so blessed, he knew what to say and wasn't afraid to say it, this song is all about the horrors of greed of mankind, how did he know? Marvin still makes me cry!!
I love how various artists came together for this video and it will make you cry l love Marvin Gaye may he rest in heaven and his music for generations to come
...Rolling Stone Magazine picked the "What's Going On" album as the 6th greatest album of all time. When you consider the zillions of albums that have been released in all of time; What's Going On is a monumental achievement that most people cannot even begin to comprehend---present day so-called artist included.
I am... it was a hit when I was in my early teens, and I loved Marvin's smooth, relaxed way of singing that could make any fear of "The Bomb" dropping on my house go away in three minutes.
I mt Marvin once at work, unfortunately he wasn´t himself due to the drugs but he still left an indelible mark on me and I will never forget our conversation
I'm sorry, I'll call out my fault for this one, I'm just probably more perturbed than usual seeing the news and such. You must certainly dont have to agree for sure. Heaven knows I don't agree with some things around two. I thought you were one of those inevitable smartass alt-right comments or something. I'm sorry about how I acted there.
This song presents a problem and gives no solution. You listen to it and get the feeling there's no hope for this world. Yes I agree that this world is soon to fall, but there is hope in Jesus Christ. With Him all things are possible. Have joy and rejoice our King of kings is on His way!! 👑 👑 👑
Marvin Gaye has been gone for 39 years and his music will live on forever

Words well spoken. When I hear the ending It makes me think of GODS Angels crying over this Sin sick world. Marvin Gaye was truly a Genius. GOD blessed him with this masterpiece.
He does an awesome job with this song with his very own signature on it ! The
Bee Gees are awesome in their original cut of the song ! Lord knows we have a lot of incredible talent in the USA !!
Some of Marvin songs like this song and what’s going on was before their time. They to play those songs on the radio today.
Beautiful the way they added such perfect pics of our brightest stars to a song by one of the brightest starts of all times.
WOW. !!! Was this guy ahead of his time. This should be the standard bearer for climate change. I appreciated this song back in the day , but it is more relevant right now. Great job !
Geweldige sound met een belangrijke boodschap.. Dit is de TOP van de classics..
powerful lyrics! Back in the good old days when music had meaning. I live as if I was in the 70's
Marvin Gaye still gives me goosebumps to this day
Marvin was so blessed, he knew what to say and wasn't afraid to say it, this song is all about the horrors of greed of mankind, how did he know? Marvin still makes me cry!!
song was written in 71, it is amazing how prophetic all of the verses have come to pass
I don't know how things used to be, but I know how things are supposed to be.

...Rolling Stone Magazine picked the "What's Going On" album as the 6th greatest album of all time.
When you consider the zillions of albums that have been released in all of time; What's Going On is a monumental achievement that most people cannot even begin to comprehend---present day so-called artist included.
EVERY person on this planet should own this album!
I love the vibe on this, also Sade's vibe on her songs. You can lose yourself in this mellow soul music.
I am... it was a hit when I was in my early teens, and I loved Marvin's smooth, relaxed way of singing that could make any fear of "The Bomb" dropping on my house go away in three minutes.
Beautiful🎉❤
One POWERFUL MESSAGE!!
@Kaspar Sheard stfu
As a 20year who grandmother told me to listen to this, I have to say that this music is timeless and it's message is still relevant today
I mt Marvin once at work, unfortunately he wasn´t himself due to the drugs but he still left an indelible mark on me and I will never forget our conversation
What did he say to you?
😂
This song is a big wake up call.
You are so very right!!!!
I’m 21 years old and this music is wayyy better than today’s music! I could listen to this music all day everyday!!
Great song
Where have all my talented black singers gone???
I'm sorry, I'll call out my fault for this one, I'm just probably more perturbed than usual seeing the news and such. You must certainly dont have to agree for sure. Heaven knows I don't agree with some things around two. I thought you were one of those inevitable smartass alt-right comments or something. I'm sorry about how I acted there.

All Things Ain't What They use To Be! But Marvin Gaye's Great Voice Will Last For ever!
Love this song im 22 years old and this has to be one of my favorites if not my #1 its just to amazing not to. wish I was alive in this era
This song presents a problem and gives no solution. You listen to it and get the feeling there's no hope for this world. Yes I agree that this world is soon to fall, but there is hope in Jesus Christ. With Him all things are possible. Have joy and rejoice our King of kings is on His way!! 👑 👑 👑
Love listening to this song of Marvin. Its music in particular that is charming to me.
