So... For those wondering... I sold all my coins a lonnnnnng time ago at about $15/coin. Yes... you read that right. It seemed right at the time, because after that, they never got above 10 bucks again for like 3 years.... Now I think about it all the time, lmao... What could have been. Sadly... I'm not a millionaire.
@@dannye6912 Probaly around 0.2 to 0.5 in those years i also sold all my coins early could have been rich. Thing is at the time nobody believed it would happen just bubble that was going to burst.
@HydrooxY You are correct, it is the 890. The 790 is only cheaper at some retailers, and no one has it in stock. At least not anyone I could find. It's hard to find a cheap motherboard that will fit 4 dual hight pci-e cards. Also, the cheapest I could find on a 790 was 125, and they were and still are out of stock. Newegg has 890's for 179 (link in the description)
@philipthrasher dhl has delivered the 4x sapphire 5850 today. as i can see now those cards have 1 crossfire port only.. do you think i can use all 4 on one motherboard even without connectiing them all together with 3 crossfire bridges? i'm thinking of connecting 2 and another 2 with a crossfire bridge and using a dvi/vga loopback connector on one pair to avoid that they shutdown without a display connected...
@m1ndsurf3r the null connectors you talk about are a great idea. I've heard you get about a 5mhash increase on each card from doing that, as there is apparently a small performance hit for using crossfirex. I'll be making that switch tomorrow. More videos to come.
do you use diablo miner for a particular reason? or just because it mad a good hashrate on that hardware comparing wiki page? i think about running linux as well but from a thumbdrive. i think everything that is reducing the power consumption is good
@philipthrasher Thanks for clearing this up. This has been frustrating me for a while, I couldn't seem to work out why the card closest to the cpu runs so hot. I'd been thinking that it was some kind of overhead, needing to process a display that doesn't exist.
@hopelesswait You are correct. It is better to not use crossfire, and some people have reported up to 5mhash gains per cards switching to dummy connectors. I have put a guide to creating dummy connectors in the description. You'll need these to keep the cards from turning off.
@philipthrasher I see. And what does this mean? Does this mean AMD cards are better than nVidias? Or is this a coincidence, meaning that this is the only scenario where the AMD beats the nVidia cards? Because if for more complex calculations (like real-time particle simulation) nVidia is better, then I guess I won't switch. But if the tables turned ever since AMD bought ATi, then damn it, I might have to rebuild my PC.
The Ubuntu Mining Guide you have linked in the comments shows an installation with SDK 2.4 .. is there a complete guide including installation of SDK 2.1 ? i had no luck trying to use 2.1 instead of 2.4.. this is hard stuff for a linux noob :)
@cclark852 Not the CPU... it's cool as a cucumber. It's just hot cuz there is no airflow across the back like with the others. Even with the top card being so hot... It's still a relatively low temperature.
@m1ndsurf3r I'm on a pool. Mining with eligius. I've thought about going solo, but I like the more constant flow of money. Pooled mining is really the only way to go nowadays. If you find a zero fee pool (like eligius), you will likely make more money than going solo. link to eligius is in the description.
Top card is probably hotter than the others because it's right next to the CPU and heat sink. I have 4 5850s in my rig and the GPU next to the CPU and MB heat sink runs about 64-58C, the second and third GPUs run around 59-53C, and the GPU farthest away from the CPU is the coolest around 55-49C.
@hopelesswait Your OS has nothing to do with hash rates. I personally prefer linux, because I can script/automate a lot of stuff in it. The biggest bonus to linux, however is stability. You'll stay up longer. The best things for bringing temperature down is underclocking your ram (won't hurt hash rate) and throwing more fans in there. There are people in the forums that have done 4x6990's... I don't think it's crossfirex supported though. You'll likely have to use the null connector hack.
@m1ndsurf3r Yes, it guides you for the 2.4 release, for 2.1, I have instructions in the description of this video now. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks! Happy mining.
@thedevo01 It's better for developers having to use it. --easier to write code for-- As far as performance goes, it's not quite there yet. The fastest nvidia cards right now are doing 1/8th of the fastest ati cards in terms of mhash's/second
@m1ndsurf3r I use diablo miner because I've tried all of them, and it's the fastest. The second fastest being phoenix/phatk on 2.4 sdk. diablo runs best on the 2.1 sdk for 5850's You may save some power with a thumb drive, and you'll definitely save money, but both will be negligible. Hashing doesn't really use the HDD hardly at all, and mine even falls asleep sometimes.
@thedevo01 The gap between the two has never been much as far as gaming is concerned. One brand always has a latest card that's better than the competition. It's a game of cat and mouse. If you're gaming, rebuilding your system just because something is out that's better is somewhat ludicrous. You'd be rebuilding your box monthly if you followed that philosophy. I can only tell you that OpenCL is a much faster math language than Cuda. Especially for mining. SHA-256 is around 8x faster on OpenCL
@m1ndsurf3r deepbit will definitely cost you more money than it's worth from being so big. eligius is much better. Forgot to add the link earlier... it's in the description now. Please rate my vid/like it. :-)
it seems like you havent even attempted to keep pace with the financial world have you? the US is printing dollars like its going out of style, the Euro is pretty close to collapsing. at the present rate both the US dollar and the Euro will become worthless. Bitcoins are immune to currency manipulation by banks and governments. if the USD and Euro tank Bitcoins will become even more valuable. he actually IS creating real money. by the time you understand it, it will be too late for you to play.
@BelgianLife It's interesting to me that you're willing to judge someone you don't know. I own my own house, I have a great job, and this is a side hobby that makes enough money to cover the power bill. There are people who have made 6 figures with this. You seem like the kind of person with lots of anger, a miserable life, and likely (different from me) not much money. Why don't you spend some time improving yourself instead of tearing others down. You're not very good at it.

@philipthrasher 3x 75ohm resistors on the dvi/vga adapter should do it: 75ohm between those vga pins 1-6 / 2-7 / 3-8

@philipthrasher What about Cuda? I heard it's better than OpenCL.
@hopelesswait That's correct. If you only have two, you can just use crossfirex. Crossfirex only supports 4 gpus, and each 6990 has two gpu's in them.
@philipthrasher

How often do you mine 50 bitcoins on average?
Have you made back your initial start up cost for graphics cards yet?
oh...and are you on a pool or are you doin solo mining?
@philipthrasher Thanx for the upload mate.

@philipthrasher i gonna check that pool out.. currently i'm with a crappy gpu on deepbit.net pool

The link on your blog is broken.
How many bitcoins have you been able to mine per day back than?
about 0.5-1 BTC per day 🤑
@thedevo01 nvidia cards are horrible for openCL. Tesla cards don't even get half as many mhashs.

@philipthrasher Really? That's impressive. I have to try that like right now.
@oskArtist Yes, I have. It was better than poclbm, but diablo has them all beat by about 15mhash/s per card.
