Dionne’s syndicated column appears twice each week in The Washington Post, and he is a regular NPR commentator, as well as a Brookings senior fellow and author of the award-winning Why Americans Hate Politics, Our Divided Political Heart and other works on American public issues. His seventh book is a profile of Goldwater conservatism from the mid-1960s to today’s Tea Party. Arguing that Goldwater’s ideologically rigorous platform harmed the Republican Party by making it inhospitable to moderates, Dionne shows how successive waves of Goldwater conservatives have eliminated all other definitions of “conservative,” including Bush’s “compassionate” variety and Fourth Way, to the detriment of not only the Party-which speaks exclusively for an older, white demographic no longer representative of the nation-but to American politics as a whole.

Excellent point raised by the second-to-last question. Right wing does not necessarily equate to conservative. There are fiscal conservatives, social conservatives, and constitutional conservatives. There is also libertarianism and nationalism, neither of which are particularly "conservative" though they are right of centre. There is nothing inherently "conservative" about cutting taxes while increasing government expenditure while a nation is at war or refusing to perform constitutionally-mandated duties, such as that to advise and consent presidential appointments.

Yes, good point, terminology fails us here.
Any argument used to be able to be squashed by calling it commie or socialist ... today people are learning that by turning away from socialism to this predatory, casino capitalism we have now that the US is the biggest loser nation. Our people do not make enough to support or better themselves, and compared to the rest of the developed world the US is way down on most metrics. Republicans / Conservatives / Libertarians simply do not care - American citizens do not appear on their lists of priorities.

The word "racist" has for a long time been the single most effective fear-word in the leftist and neoconservative arsenal. For decades, they have successfully used it in the political arena to slander traditionalists, shut down debate, and leave opponents running for cover. In the social arena, they have caused even more damage by using it to brainwash impressionable children and young college students, and to teach white people to hate their nation, their cultural traditions, and worst of all, themselves.

*The problem is that BOTH sides decided to stop working with the other, starting roughly 40 years ago. Until we can all come together and compromise to attain universally desired goals, nothing will change for either side. The breakdown has difficult origins for a comment section, but it is also destroying our country. Every time we refuse to even talk to each other, we inch just a littler bit closer to a hot (shooting) civil war."

    • @koushiro86
      @koushiro86 6 лет назад +4

"Both sides", that's rich. There are only two major parties, but there are definitely more than two sides. The GOP exists to cut taxes on and reduce regulations on, corporations and the rich. Period. But this is not a majoritarian position, so they had to grab the fundamentalists, racists and bigots to pad their votes and pass voter restrictions and gerrymandering in the regions they control to maintain that control.
The Democratic party has never been a leftist party, they by and large also serve wealthy donors. Just, not all of them serve the same ones, and the ones they do serve are alright with some social liberalism. The base of the party is increasing progressive, however, not moderate, and are wise to the situation both party establishments have put them in in regards to various forms of debt, a lack of gainful employment, inadequate health care, and a legacy of environmental pollution from industrialization.
The GOP has an expiration date, and the Democratic party is in civil war against its own base because one party cannot serve two masters - the corporate and rich donors have to be taken down and their loyal servants in the party establishment primaried and removed from positions of influence. Once the progressives take over the party, then you can see sane, majoritarian policy implemented.

The last question speaks of the 80% of the population which is irrelevant to the political machinations as to the top 1% and secondly the 99th percentile to the 80th percentile . Dionne fails to address the ramifications of this political irrelevance sufficiently when he segues to a Peggy Noonan article about the American Family struggling to stay together . Dionne seems to be avoiding the real ramification here which is massive amounts of money perverting what should be democratic politics. The point in response to the last question should have been that the bottom 80 percent of wealth holders in our society have manifestly zero influence upon the political decisions made in our society. And the answer , furthermore, should have been , as far as I am concerned, that we , as a nation must , at our absolute peril, find a way to return to something approaching a real democracy where the voices of the citizenry are heard and carry real influence.

You also need to bring someone in to discuss how the "left" has become a source of ridicule in the US and how the left is failing at everything even at caucusing lol. Sure Trump has been awful... but Hilary isn't exactly a prophet either... please... "how the left lost everything it had". Good.

The problem with that argument is that Hillary isn't a leftie and neither are the Democrats who fucked it all up. They are right wing, corporatist whores hence why people like Sanders have spent their lives fighting against these corrupt assholes.
But compared to the GOP there is no question that they are the lesser of two evils.

      @@555Trout yep. Trump's legacy:
      - repeal and replace = fail
      - muslim ban = fail
      - republican tax cut = fail. rewarded the wealthiest 1% who were already making money hand over fist. the middle class were left out. The national debt continued to go up despite that fact that it makes sense to payoff the debt during "prosperous" economies.
      - drain the swamp = fail, (hired 7 goldman sachs bankers and several cronies with no qualifications other than they donated large amounts to his campaign. requires loyalty to him, not the country or constitution. Trump's swamp 2.0).
      - massive deregulation including but not limited to clean water and air standards. Corporations can pollute more easily, republicans cheer!
      - Russia hoax = fail, many of his campaign admitted after lieing several times including to the FBI that they did in fact meet with russians to get dirt on hillary. Conclusive evidence has shown Russia did hack the DNC, and interfere with the 2016 election and continues to do so.
      - most corrupt administration with at least 10 former members locked up now.
      - Lock her up! = fail, Hillary has been the most vetted politician in living memory. Investigated numerous times and no crime found. (and I don't even like here for my own reasons)

      - Impeached Dec. 18, 2019
      - First president to lose three war campaigns in one term (Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria) while turning new allies against us.
      - First President to surrender to a non-state actor (negotiated a "deal" with the Taliban to release 5000 Taliban fighters from custody, and GTFO of Afghanistan. In return, the Taliban agreed not to attack us too hard as Trump ran with his tail tucked between his legs.
      - Trump has pardoned four war criminals against the advice of the Pentagon. All convicted or charged with murder for separate incidents.
      - Planned on running in 2020 on great economy and low unemployment. both went in the shitter now.
      - Trump has never achieved even a 50% favorable presidential approval rating, hovering close to only 40% his whole term. But his small trump cult continues to hold on to their hate.

I'm not trying to be devil's advocate but a lot of words doesn't make you right and the boots on the ground are drastically against you. If the left could just try to take the boot off of the throat of everyone involved we could all get back to the balance government was intended to be. You get what you give. Stop putting pressure on an entire group to make yours more powerful. What you espouse and are offended by is exactly what you do. No responses in two years says it all. You're not that intriguing because your thoughts aren't interesting anymore. People have caught on. And I'm a liberal. You're a liar
