Godzilla director Gareth Edwards has revealed that Joe Brody dying early in the movie wasn’t always going to be the plan. In fact, there were drafts of the film where Joe survived. But according to Edwards, they just didn’t work because each one with him in it was too “silly”. Edwards claims that the tone of the movie with Joe and Ford working together would have felt too much like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Edwards also added that Joe Brody’s story was “done” after he provided the pieces of the puzzle needed to understand the mystery of these creatures. Joe would be like a “fifth wheel” if he remained in the company of the military characters.
@@superjackster0165 Edwards definitely knows better than me, but I don't think that having Bryan Cranston's character as a fifth wheel would've been that bad. I think the audience would've actually cared for him and his son to reunite at some point, so even though his character wouldn't have much left to do, he would still bring an emotional weight to the movie, which it lacked for the most part.
@@superjackster0165 Then why not just have Joe be behind the scene with Ken Watanabe’s character, while Ford was in the frontlines along with the other soldiers, and they communicate with each other from time to time as things went along? Would’ve provided some good engagement on both sides of the story.
Bryan Cranston nailed it big time in this film, as a scientist who never recovered from a tragic catastrophic event at the power plant that took place years ago.
Oh man... that improvisation! I still can't believe they killed his character. Especially when it is clear his performance was carrying this movie. His performance made all the scenes without Godzilla intriguing and worth watching, carrying the movie on his back like a sack of potatoes. Then he dies and all you want is for Godzilla to show up and take all the screen time but he never really does. Instead we are forced to watch an emotionless robot performance by the soldier son. Ugh. I still like this movie but... It could have been so much better.
It's not necessarily improvisation. A lot of times they adjust the dialogue on set while they shoot because they think something works better at the time. For example, the scene with Obi-wan and Vader in Star Wars has wildly different dialogue in the script. They toned it down while shooting into something else, then while editing they changed the dialogue again. A movie is made three times. Once on script, again during production, then during editing.
I feel like Joe Brody should've been in Mark Russell's (Kyle Chandler in KOTM) spot. I get the emotional impact that Brody's death had on the movie, but I think everyone pretty much agrees that Bryan Cranston's performance was just too good for him to be killed off early as he did.

They should have really kept him as the main character, maybe have him pass during the final battle similar to how he goes in the movie. It was an interesting twist to have him die but Jesus not as early as it was.
God, this scene is tremendous coming back to it after years of not seeing it. I'm suuuuuuper glad Minus One came in and delivered on the potential this movie didn't quite reach.
Seriously Bryan Cranton is king of acting! Incredible! Also, screw the haters, enjoyed this version of Godzilla, a lot! For a fun version of similar film vibe, we've got Pacific Rim, so, I'm happy with having Monarch and Pacific Rim series each; fills my appetite to a T!
This movie is more akin to 1954 with its grounded tone and all so yeah it’s fine The movie could’ve been better in the characters but everything else was fine
Godzilla never was known for the acting or people characters, at least for me. But man Bryan Cranston really hit a home run with this scene and all of his scenes early in the movie
He really was too good for Godzilla. He was amazing in the short time he was given. Best part of the movie, and had better and more emotion than the rest of the entire cast, and this movie also had Watanabe in it who is an accomplished actor in himself.
A remarkably well acted scene. Anyone who disliked this movie because "there wasn't enough Godzilla" went in expecting a shitty marvel movie style. Sorry. This isn't that at all. Godzilla 2014 is a very well paced and reserved film. From a film-making standpoint there hasn't been a monster movie this intelligently crafted since Jaws and Alien, which, by the way, have less screen time for their titular creatures COMBINED than Godzilla 2014 has for Godzilla.
I did not dislike the movie because of the lack of Godzilla, when he was on screen it was awesome. I don't like the movie because they killed of this character and had the movie follow the most boring character of the whole cast. His son... Had they had Joe Brody as the main character for the entire movie it would have been a much better ride as he is an actor with charisma and well the dude playing his son did nothing really. And because of the boring human storyline after the point of Joe's death, the lack of Godzilla became a problem as it was the only exciting part of the movie.
Spoken like someone who never saw an older Godzilla movie in their life which renders your argument moot. FYI, Godzilla movies of old were much like those 'shitty marvel movies' which I recommend you actually see for yourself before writing them off; Do you have a problem with the Japanese? It's looking that way. I didn't watch the Godzilla movies of old from back then to see the poorly dubbed characters scramble to right wrongs that only Godzilla could really solve; Say whatever you want about how 'campy' or whatever the late 1900 films were but they at least focused on the actual fighting when it came down to it. Far as this movie and King of the Monsters are concerned, the creatures are more an afterthought. AN AFTERTHOUGHT. Praise coming from the likes of you only encourages them to keep with this poor formula. When Godzilla vs. Kong comes along it'll be a cutaway ever 30 seconds to pointless human scenes, not the actual fight that the title itself entails, which is beyond sad.
My opinion: keeping Joe alive and have Joe, Ford and Serizawa lead the human story to have been the better decision, it just feels like killing Joe off and then after Godzilla 2014 completely drop Ford as a character to be a huge waste of great potential for the human story as they did have a good dynamic and Bryan Cranston did so good with what little he had on script. I also believe he would be a great supporting character for the Russell family in KOTM.
While I do believe that Bryan Cranston did I great job in this, I really don’t see the movie continuing with him. What would he be doing for the rest of the movie?
Exactly, he's a tragic character, but atleast he'd die off knowing he isn't some madmen unable to cope/mourn for his wife's death. Bryan can act, he'd fit even in the silliest entry of MonserVerse, sure.. his character isn't.
Not really but it definitely didn’t have much going for its characters after he died. Other than that all the kaiju stuff was pretty damn awesome, even while minimal.
Truman Fleming well I know they've been filming but it hasn't been that long really, according to gormaru island theres quite a bit more, starting from June and heading to the Chinese location in October
Now I know loads of people will disagree with me but I think I noticed something that other people haven't So yes Bryan Cranston was a great actor in this movie and very awesome but I think here's what I'm talking about the main reason why he wasn't the Protagonist is because he felt more like a villain than a protagonist you know the scene where he's talking to Ford in his house before they leave well when he said *I'm gonna find the truth and end this* the bit *And end this* Means he's gonna kill the Titans including Godzilla so Maybe he would have been the main human antagonist if he stayed alive Now I know loads of people will disagree but if you watch the movie again and pay attention to that scene you might have the same feeling
Even at that point it could have been great what others would do to avoid the destruction of Godzilla, like Watanabe characther or even his son- the story could have been better that just another monster movie with soldiers.
But then we had a similar character in Mark Russel in Godzilla KotM with the same motivation to kill Godzilla and he managed to learn otherwise and change his mind, oh and also he lived.
He seriously should have been the main character.
right! he was so good at the improvisation
I'd pay good money for Heisenberg vs Godzilla.
Ikr, the trailer was a misleading towards the movie. Joe could've been a better main character than Ford

@@Fl0k5ser Ford wasn’t bad he was alright

He'd make a legendary (pun intended) protagonist for the whole cinematic universe.
If they reworked the story to have Cranston as the lead, maybe have him work for monarch, he could carry all of the monsterverse on his back

Killing off Bryan Cranston’s character was the first, in a long list of mistakes Legendary made with this franchise.
I wish that he was in Godzilla king of the monsters and godzilla vs kong. Poor joe 😔
Great scene. Hijacked the script with incredible improv
This man and Dr Serizawa were the only good characters from Legendary MonsterVerse so far, imo.
