Answer is Squeegee. Forget all the sprays, and special rags. Use some citrus based degreasing soapy water, get a mild scrubber you would use for dishes and wash the windows. While still soapy and wet Squeegee it off and wipe any drips. I'll never waste my time again trying to buff out the streaks with microfiber cloths... Squeegees eliminate the whole problem.
That's good for an average home job. I find window cleaner, on cheese/mutton cloth to wet wipe the window, then microfiber to wick up moisture to eliminate every possible smudge or streak mark. I do professional detailing, and the standard is "every square inch of that glass, prestine".
To clean the bottom of the windscreen without having to contort into some weird angle, wrap the cloth around your hand palm down (away from the glass) and use the back of your hand
Actual answer: when sunlight/UV light beats down on the vinyls of the interior ,the vinyls give off something known as off gas. Off gas has a high surface tension characteristic. This is why the film is so uniform across the interior windshield.. You need a very mild abrasive / magic eraser with a decent glass cleaner to break it down … then polish it up. ( tyvm CF)
Actually, you don't need anything abrasive. Off-gassing compounds may be stubborn but wiping with acetone first will easily remove these compounds before using a competent glass cleaner, I tend to prefer Zep Foaming Glass Cleaner.
The oily like film that gets on the inside of windshields especially, is from the degassing of the plastics used to make the dash. When the sun starts heating it up, it releases chemicals that sticks to the inside of the windshield. Now you know!
It not only comes from off gassing of plastics but from polishing agents such as ArmorAll as well as from tobacco or weed smoke. It will condense on the windows as residue from the oils in these items. Another incurable issue is when one lives in coastal towns and cities. The salt and salt spray in the air will leave an abrasive residue on the glass outside of the windshield. If the vehicle is parked outside in this environment 24/7/365 it will accelerate the erosion of the glass. Turning on one’s wipers and hitting the wash function is useless. The damage has been done by the wipers moving along the dry glass which will lead to microscopic scratches on the outer surface that cannot be effectively polished out. It’s much easier to spray down the glass with a mild soap solution in water before turning on the wipers so a lot of the abrasive material is washed down before the wipers move onto the glass. When all else fails and the vehicle is ten years old AND you want to keep it, just replace the windshield and then start over with the proper methods of keeping the glass clean. It’s cheaper to replace the glass than to have an accident because the surfaces were scratched beyond any means of repair which will affect your night vision especially with todays high power LED headlights hitting a scratched windshield which will create a blinding glare for you the driver.
Nope it ain't wrong man it's from hitting blunts till inside looks like impenetrable London fog or riding around with CheechnChong as in my case anyway.....
One of the best replies here is the one who stated to clean the windshield wipers! BUT with more of a disposable type rag bc wipers have black grungy nasty road film dissected bugs and possible Pterodactyl poop all over them......
My hack is to use two cloths like you did in the video, but use the cross hatch method for both the exterior and interior. When you’ve finished, it almost looks like the glass isn’t there! 💫👌🏾
Dawn dish soap or other see thru soap with hot/warm water and 2 good rags. Not a lot of soap - depending on level of dirt. Easy peasy. Good for any glass or mirrors.
I did my outside windows with Dawn and Jet Dry (dishwasher rinse solution) then I squeegeed them dry. They are SO clean, I even posted a picture on my FB LOL
I like the idea of wiping the windshield in two different directions so you can see the streaks. Many years ago I dated a guy who smoked. I don't. At one time he bought a brand new car, black on black and smoked in it. One day when we were going out during the day I noticed the windshield had little sparkles in it. I ran my finger across it and was so grossed out because it was nicotine. This guy was lazy and I don't know if he ever cleaned his car but there were cigarette ashes on the black carpet and that awful nicotine haze on the windows. Years later I bought a brand new Ford Ranger truck and picked up this guy to show him. I asked him to please not smoke in my truck. What did he do? He lit up a cigarette and thumped the ashes on the new carpet. Smh.
I'm a 100% Disabled Veteran, with neck and back issues, which makes it difficult if not impossible sometimes, to reach the interior of the windshield. Any recommendations for a long handle cleaning tool I could to reach all interior windshield areas ?
Home Depot sells an adjustable wand with a triangle shaped microfiber pad on it and a spare pad. Both are removable for washing. About $17 as I recall. Made specifically for cleaning the inside of the hard to reach areas of your windshield.
That glass cleaner, and glass cleaner in general won't fully get rid of the film on the inside of the windshield. It's from all the chemicals off gassing from the interior material.

Thats vapor haze. I vaped hardcore after quitting smoking and my interior glass looked exactly like that and its hard to clean. Trick i learned, lather up that glass with rubbing alcohol and wipe down. After that clean as normal and you’ll be amazed, like new glass. Only way i clean glass now. Stop using Armor All. It's the worst. It has petroleum distillates in it which really gunk up the dash and door cards. Also leaves an oily film on things. Meguires Vinyl & Rubber cleaner is much better. No oily film and leaves the new car smell.

The film on the inside of the glass is partially caused by off gassing of interior protection/ shine products.
It can be a big factor of using wrong dressing, vaping, smoking, but if you use these tips you can clean any glass.
Also from the vinyl and plastic outgassing from the dash. When the sun hits, the material heats up and starts to deteriorate.
Very good job
Happy detailing!!!

Why is the direction to wipe significant?
So if the streaks are vertical you know it’s outside and if they are horizontal it is inside
