This is my favorite story of all times. I'm from Birmingham Alabama near where Wayne is from and I'm also a reggae musician and this story blows my mind every time I hear it. It's magical. I still get those goose bumps every time I hear this solo. You can tell Chris was proud of this moment too..he's almost speechless. It's what producers and artists live for..those unexpected moments that resonate throughout time and the universe. Considering the history of reggae and race relations in Birmingham, Alabama and around the world, this moment was really a spiritual occurrence! Two worlds coming together to express their joys and pains through one mighty sound. Jah!
I saw Wayne first at a dance at Florence/Lauderdale Coliseum in 1968 with The Vikings. 3 years later, he played on several tracks of an album I cut with the Muscle Shoals Swampers. The experience was extraordinary. Arguably the best rythym section in the world - and Wayne on guitar. I wasn't surprised when he went on to play with the Stones. I was a good player, but Wayne put my jaw on the floor. Knew him in the peanut butter days. Good to know the suits honor talent at some level.
Yes, and his lead on "Worried About You" from Tattoo You is truly awesome as well. Hand of Fate and Worried About You may be my two favorite Stones songs, in large part because of Wayne Perkins' amazing leads.

Wayne is an old friend and great guitar player. I remember him asking me to drop him off at George Harrisons house in LA. They let him in the gate but I had to drive off. Wayne is truly a class act and humble man with integrity and character.

BLACK AND BLUE was the first Stones studio album after the departure of virtuoso Mick Taylor and Wayne's solo is very similar to Taylor's style of playing. Wayne was seriously considered as Mick Taylor's replacement after Taylor left and Keith had reported that Keith cultivated Wayne by having him live in with Keith for awhile. But then Ronnie Wood showed up and he was perfect fit musically and socially, and that was that.

That "Hand Of Fate" guitar solo IS a killer solo and does smack of Mick Taylor. It's one of the best parts of the entire BLACK AND BLUE album (for what it's worth) and when I first heard it (on 8-track) I thought it to be a carry-over Taylor guitar track. Perkins was in fact the heir apparent for awhile and Keith even tried to cultivate him by having him live in with Keith for a short time trying to acclimate Perkins to The Stones' band culture, but to that end when Ronnie Wood happened along it was a no-brainer and Keith makes no bones about it, at the same time admitting that the job up to that point belonged to Perkins. Certain Stones tracks have guitar work on them that upon hearing it you suspect is a mercenary player, such as Wayne Perkins on "Hand Of Fate" or for that matter, Jimmy Page's uncredited solo on "Heart Of Stone". But having said that, a conscious effort was made to emulate the sound and style of The Stones' players, such as Page's guitar work on "One Hit To The Body". Ronnie Wood is certainly not the best player but perhaps the most versatile and gels so well with Keith that the claim has always been that when they're playing together, one can't really tell which is playing which part. The Richard/Taylor hard riffing/virtuoso soloing duo will always be remembered as the 1969-1973 period which probably constitutes the golden age of The Rolling Stones' career after the demise of Brian Jones. By no means did any of The Stones ever want Taylor to leave the group. By now The Stones are a nostalgia live act because they can't write any really good new music anymore and don't seem to have the interest for it, but I'll still bet that they can pull it off if they really want to. I've been a huge stones fan since early 90s, loved everything up until tattoo you, for decades I thought worried about you solo was Ronnie's most melodic interesting solos along with hand of fate, I found out few yrs ago it's not even Ronnie wood, strangest feeling ever, I'd never even heard of Wayne Perkins, I'm trying to find an accurate lesson on his black and blue stuff but there's not Many attempting that, and don't sound exactly like the record
Not true. He's basically a studio musician, but check out you tube and you will find solo material as well as recordings with some of the biggest names in music.
