- Bagatelle perform their hit song ‘Summer in Dublin’ in Castlebar, County Mayo.
First formed in August 1978, Irish band Bagatelle are Liam Reilly on keyboards and vocals, John O’Brien on guitar and vocals, Ken Doyle on bass and vocals and Wally McConville on drums and vocals.
In October 1980 Bagatelle undertook a nationwide tour of Ireland. On 11 October 1980, supported by the English group Alibi, they performed at the Traveller’s Friend Hotel in Castlebar, County Mayo.
This concert was recorded for RTÉ by producer Ian McGarry and his outside broadcast crew. Two months later, edited highlights of the concert were broadcast in an hour long show on RTÉ 1.
Bagatelle perform the song ‘Summer in Dublin’ from the band’s debut album ‘Boat’ released in 1980.
‘Summer In Dublin’ has been in the Irish charts almost every summer since its release in 1980.
‘Bagatelle In Concert’ was broadcast on 7 December 1980.
A very special song indeed - I was only a teenager back in those days but this song somehow captured the Zeitgeist of young people in Ireland - By 1982 I was in college in Dublin and the lyrics of this song became all so real - And the Liffey used to stink like hell - It all feels very nostalgic

I recall seeing the play at the West End ballroom in Ballybunion - since pulled down - must have been in 1980 too although I found this song a bit boring.
