"yeah ill show you guys how to take this apart"
*smashes with hammer*
…because lithium batteries like a good spanking.
That’s exactly what I was thinking lol.
lol. that's cringey, quick though! I'm planning to take apart some laptop batteries here at home without youtube/google for a guide yet, but this was suggested.
This used to work in a auto body shop.
He was also good at taking the new cars apart.
I always try to be careful when seperating the cells, several time I seen sparks if I try too force them apart.
Always fill them to capacity and wait several hours and check the voltage. If after 3 hours they are still at 4.17 volts they are probably good for projects. If after 3 hours the battery voltage is down to 4.10 volts its probably not good for building battery packs. But still good for flashlight.
If you build a battery pack with one of the cells that lose capacity too fast, the battery pack wont stay in balance. Learn that the hard way.
A safe rule of thumb is that these laptop batteries are good to charge and discharge at 1 amp. The bigger the battery pack you build, the higher you can charge and discharge it. Say you charge a 48 cell battery pack at 10 amps, thats 10 amps divided by 48 cells, well with the limit of what the cells can handle.
Great input! I use harvested cells individually most of the time. Do you solder your packs together?
Checking Voltage does not mean cell is good
recently i got salvaged nec versa e2000 battery pack. Surprise inside, it contains sony us18650gr, eight units.
its better to use screw driver, safer due to battery wont be dented.
thanks! just got two new klarus XT-11's flashlights and have some older surefire's i have had for 10 years now! been looking for 18650,but thanks to you, i'll be visiting my nearest home depot trash bin/dumpster for some free ones! never new or thought of this!u-tub is grate for other things besides buying on line, again thank you.
I always use thick rubber gloves, since that nickel will eventually cut your fingers
Your hammer method is sure a lot faster than what I did. I used a Dremel to cut a slot, then a screw driver and then pliers.
I use two big pliers to twist the battery and break it. Safest way to break.
also worth mentioning if the wrap is damaged (as does with opening) DO NOT USE or re-wrap.. The positive post is @ the top close to the negative so good video as I have done this many many years now.. But be safe
He is handling that very badly, do it carefully, don't puncture cells, don't just rip things apart like an idiot (you'll end up cutting yourself at some point, or shorting out cells).
Good advice! It wouldn't be nearly as fun to watch though ;}
+GadgetClass True.
DusteDs Stuff i just did this last night and cut tf out of my hands
@@GadgetClass Not nearly as fun for the A&E department either ...
:-(
@Asif Khan #Derp
here i am, carefully disassembling these nb´batterypacks, and he just hammers it to pieces....
I guess you don't have any idea of the danger of putting dents in one of these cells.
They can short internally and catch fire or explode. Its best to use non-metallic tools.
I use a dremel tool to weaken the case and just give it a twist.
An explosion would have made a great video.
A simple way to take apart 18650 battery packs is to hand saw the corner edge of the casings to make a small opening and then pry them with a flathead.
Thank. Useful info. Which brand laptop batteries use “ Panasonic, LG and Sanyo” cells?
I usually use a sharpened paint scraper and just jab it into the creases of the plastic then twist. Don't want to risk damaging good cells myself
I just yanked four 18650's out of my daughter's old defunct hp laptop battery pack, and they are ALL good.
If you don't have a spot welding machine, just leave the old nickel strips on the battery cell so you can solder it correctly.
this green ones are good; i have 2 from Ali under name Litokala and they last 2-3 hourse easily in the flashlight , at maximum light
If your a doing sub-ohm vaping.. please use an ohm calculator as these can explode if you drive a low ohm coil and or use mechanical mod
That was the weirdest looking heat shrink on laptop battery cells I've ever seen. Gone thru quite a few myself and really only ever encounter the pastel full cell colors with no decorations or secondary colors, other than printed brand/model digits. Musta been a lucky laptop battery
in africa its hard to order on ebay due to delivery challenges. But guess what, its easy to find all laptop battery packs. free of charge. Been at this game for the last 6 years and i have a good stock of them. stock never runs out.
best way to rip the pack open is not by hammer. twist the ends, find at opening and used a flat hard card (even an old atm card can be good enough
Great advice!
I have flashlights that requires protected button tip cells. Those new Branded laptop batteries are expensive, might as well buy individual cells and avoid cleaning the tips for good contacts and end up costing the same.
high powered crew flashlight don't require protected cells. I wouldn't buy new battery packs just to pull cells out of though.
Is there a way to know WHICH laptop battery packs contain which 18650 cells? I want to build an e-bike battery pack; knowing in advance WHICH packs I want to find, would help me get cells all of the same brand and rating...
Not really. Some are known to use a spucific brand, but they change if their supply chain shifts.
If the cells tested good after separating them, they must have been good in the pack. That means that the charging circuit was bad. Try to reset the charging circuit.
I don't mean to be a safety nazi, but you should take care when opening and separating laptop battery packs. Those particular cells aren't as dangerous (hybrid chemistry), but a lot of packs are LiCo cells which will go thermal if abused. You could have easily shorted a cell while ripping it apart or hammering on the case.
meatsneakers Good point. Be Sure to Use Gloves and Safety Glasses.
+GadgetClass i think as a consequence, half this was unusable? am i way off?
+Grover Asylum The original battery pack was unusable because of a dead cell. The rest still work great.
Ripping all that stuff apart risks damaging the sleeve separation between positive and negative terminals - and Boom - thermal runaway.
Yep
a better way to open them up is to twist the the two ends of the battery pack...much safer than using a hammer.
onecreativecriminal or pry it with a screwdriver. u will need to find weak spot
+Bitelaserkhalif *cringes* screwdrivers and spudgers do work pretty good.
Hey,
I wanted to learn something how to get 18650 from laptops and thought I could find some tips here but sadly you aren't explaining much. For a ****Class channel i hoped for more explanation.
1. How old can the laptop battery be?
2. Are these cells protected?
3. How to check if the battery is good? You test them without explaining how.
1: The battery pack can be any age as long as it says Li-ion (not Ni-cd or Ni-mh)
2: Pretty much all battery packs have unprotected cells which is why there is protection cicuitry built in.
3: Using a multi-meter, touch one lead to the positive (top) and one lead to the negative side (bottom). If you see anything less than 2v don't bother 3 to 4v is ideal.
+GadgetClass Thanks!
Home Depot in my area will not let me take bad batteries anymore.
Apparently a guy was buying new batteries, taking the new good batteries out then returned the batteries he bought saying they didn’t work.
Jerk ruined it for us.
I doubt there is charging circuit inculcated it is just individual cell protection, reading residual charge, bat-id as some laptop read this to identify fake or geninue battery.
BTW those are Panasonic CGR18650CG 2200mah cells you pulled and with a MAX current draw of 4.3amps are NOT GOOD FOR VAPING but fine for most lights
Interesting tip ! i just got into vaping and it just so happens i have some old thinkpad batteries sitting around ... hmmm where did i put my hammer !
i order a cheap multimeter and power bank without battery from ebay i found a battery from acer laptop and dell battery module so i got like 9x battery and 6x battery look like Zippo lighters i dont know what going to use them for
laptop batteries are usually rated at 1c or less therefore they are dangerous in high amp draw applications will catch on fire
Are these the button type out of laptops or the flat top ones? I use them mostly in flashlights that need buttons.
They have a small button on the positive side. They work great in flashlights.
Another way to get 18 650 cells is to go at your local recycling center and call and ask if you can buy some of their laptop batteries I got over 90 cells good cells for 10$
18650 cells?
That's OVER (TWICE) 9000!111!!!!1!
be careful when hitting the battery pack with the hammer because lithium ion cells are highly unstable and can explode
lithium batteries are very stable. you realize everything uses them the phone computer people put one next to their face daily to talk on the phone. how many people have cracked screens from dropping them? they are on dangerous is ruptured or short circuited. even the new ones since like 2008 upwards. have to be short circuited and do nothing but vent. look at manufacters spec sheets. being short circuited, crushed diagonal and horizontal, baked at 250+ degrees, overcharged at 12volts instead of 4.2 and 3x the c of the battery for 3 hours is part of the united nations required tests.
James Smith Good points. The people complaining are the ones in the vape world where there have been a few instances of batteries blowing up in clone mods.
GadgetClass ya clone mods and cheap Chinese batteries. The Chinese don't have the technology the big 4 do. The highest Chinese batteries can go is 2500mah. They can only make ICR batteries the plants don't have the formulas to make imr and inr batteries those are trade secrets. Which is why 26650 batteries only have 5000mah. If the big 4 developed the size we could have 7000mah 26650s. The few airplanes that caught on fire are from cheap Chinese cells that weren't declared on custom forms and not packaged securely in plastic containers. But loose in bags. Any battery made from a major company is completely safe. They design them with the 99% idiot consumer base in mind. People want to plug and play and not need to know anything about safety so they design them that way. Your phone doesn't explode while talking next to your face. Laptop doesn't blow your dick off either or burn up on the bed which makes the batteries hot from no airflow and bed insulating the heat. You don't see power tools exploding or catching fire. Or cordless vaccums and dustbusters. There are several lithium batteries in every household being used daily even some abused and nothing happening worst case udualyl is the battery just dies or capacity drops down to nothing. Or can vent but it's takes delibrate action to get them to vent
I wanted to add another cheap source of these batteries. Lowes has kobalt 24volt 1.5 ah tool packs for $10 these have 6 Samsung 15l 1500mah 18amp continuous batteries in them all you need is a torx bit screwdriver to disassemble it. 6 batteries that can be used for vaping or flashlights. They have 2.0 amp battery pack for $20 and is a 2000mah 20amp battery x6 as well in it
James Smith I saw those for Black Friday special and thought it was too good to be true. They must be trying to get people in on their tools with cheap batteries.
nice hammer , from where did you buy ?
just checking Voltage don't mean anything you have to check the capacity of each Battery I have done many laptop batteries and batteries checking 3.6v or better turned out to only have 400mah so just because it reads 3.6v don't mean its still has 2350mah !
Dan Ray Yes, voltage is justvthe first culling.
WOW you said for Vaping Those batteries are Pipe bombs in any high amp drain device Those batteries ARE ONLY TO BE USED IN LOW DRAIN AMP DEVICES !! MAN Do your homework on li-lion batteries !!
I use two big pliers to twist the battery and break it. Safest way to break.
That sounds like a great method.
This apparently doesnt work. I just spent all day getting them out, and they are not high drain specific for vaping. Dont waste your time. Guess Ill use them for my 18650 flashlight
it depends what ohm's/volts/watts your vaping on.. if your out to produce huge clouds and goto competitions (lol what a joke right) than yeah... these are not for you.
You needed biggger hammer like this guy!
It would be quicker if you leave it on te road and wait for truck to drive on top!!!!
tool batteries are most likely very much abused, more so than laptops. as lap tops do not allow over use/ They have a battery management that is not found in tools.
you will damage the battery by hammering, you have to be careful not to smash the cover of the battery , why don't wear glove to protect your hands as i notice your hands are injured
Whats the difference between flat top 18650 and button tops when used in cree flashlights?
+vpsaline flat top more likely you can't get contact with the flashlight battery holder. Unless the flat top still have those solder attach then, you can make it into button top version.
you ruptured a lot of cells. Need to be more careful.
All of the hood ones still work. a couple were dead in the pack.
+daniel gruber These cells outlast any X-Files battery in mods and flashlights 3x. Only one bad cell in the pack.
ALL CAPS IGNORANT TROLL RESPONSES= JOKE
by all means... please tell as many people as possible your opinion
that way there will be more free li ion cells for people like me who know better
I have already broke apart two laptop batteries and now have 12 perfectly good 18650 cells.
@@GadgetClass Which ones were from the hood, yo?
@@RogerBarraud The G's
Laptop cells are perfect for high powered flashlights but not so much for subohm vaping. The max discharge current in laptop cells are always between 2A and 10A. Most are 5-7A. That is not enough for vaping past 25watts. Other than that great video man!! You can also get them from computer repair stores for free.
Nickel cuts feel real good.
seems legit... but shooting the back of a 12 gauge shell with a bb gun did too, doesn't mean it should be done. Was fun though...
do macbooks have these batteries?
Can you use the charging circuit that came with the batteries to charge them?
No sorry u can't
Most of these batteries won't be any good for vaporizer mods. These are typically only 3 to 6 amp batteries, and for regulated vaporizing mods you want AT LEAST 10 amp. For mechanical 20 amp are the safe minimum, although I'd suggest 20 for regulated as well.
+Gerard Van Der Graff Yeah. Not good for mechanical mods.
absolutely stupid waste of time, no laptop battery cells will have a continuous amperage safe enough for vape, they are all MAYBE 10a max. Your asking for people to hurt themselves. Jesus I mean Samsung 25rs which are considered low end now , are only like $6 average new online. Also I forgot to mention most importantly these 18650s that we heavily drain via vape mods rely on pulse amperage. Since you are firing a mod for short bursts of f
Time, the pulse rating should be well above 25. Laptop batteries, especially being In a circuit, do not need any pulse rating because no laptop draws 10x its usual amperage In bursts no matter what you do with it. Ebay the dam laptop packs or wire several together and have fun with a controlled , safe, venting/ explosion while imagining having your face near it like this shmuck recommends.
can they be use for vapes?
1:42 looks like cracking the Chocolate bar... 😂😂😂😂
ToblerSplosion!!11!??
Do those laptop 18650's tend to be protected or unprotected batteries?
Unprotected always.
D'oh...!
I am scavaging these because i got tired of my ultrafire crap always failing on me :)
You have a powerful shear strength
It's not a good idea to use a hummer since the batteries can explode and it's a big mess, also you can injure yourself.
Yeah, you should run them over with a Lexus instead...
#Derp
Is it possible to use lots of them to power 1000w 48v motor?
Yes.
Artur Hamernik no way
14 in series and 10 in parallel. Estimate 2000mah per cell at 3.7 volts. 3.7v by 14 series is 51.8v. 10 in parallel gives you 20 ah. 51.8v by 20ah us 1000w. You would need 140 cells (all tested). Put them in a 14s10p pack. 1000wats for your 48v system. Make sure your motor can run on a voltage higher then 48v.
making a ebike are you?
Rustic approach! But fast ;-)
I don't think the hammer is the best method to open the cell , pliers would be the way to go
Takes about 10 minutes to open my battery pack with pliers and knifes and flat head screwdrivers, yet he takes a minute :p
How many amps can a I get from these battery's ?
Not much. They range from 2-10. If you're lucky you'll come across the NCR18650 2900mah 10A 18A pulse. Thats about the only one I'd recommend using for vaping as long as it's in a double cell regulated.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if those cells just exploded. :P
A crappy 2ampcells. Wouldn't stress it. Go ahead and blow what's left I keep.
I don't think the first cell you tested was good. It showed only 0.3++ V.
Yeah. Any cells that don't come back with a micro charge get recycled.
I used to buy New off eBay $10 buy9cellabout $1piece. Just No amps
I found the hammer works well just remember don't hit the pack to hard.
Home Depot wouldn't let me take them they said it's hazmat.
lol. that's cringey, quick though! I'm planning to take apart some laptop batteries here at home without youtube/google for a guide yet, but this was suggested.
Be careful.Use gloves ، your hands may get injured otherwise.
Don't use a hammer!
Better use storm breaker!
The Problem with laptop 18650 cells there not high amp cells most are only 5amp MAX discharging rated here a list of some laptop cells & NONE of them are any good for any device drawing more then 6amps !!
These specs are only GOOD FOR NEW FRESH laptop batteries Used one Cells will be way Less !!
CGR18650D -2350mah 4.6amp Panasonic
INR18650-28A -2800mah 5.6amp Samsung
LGABC21865 -2800mah 5amp LG
LGABB41865 - 2600mah 5amp LG
LGDAS31865- 2200mah 5amp LG
UR18650FM - 2600mah 5amp Sanyo (RED)
Those are MAX RATINGS NOT CONTINUES AMP DRAW WHICH IS 2.5-2.7AMPS
Is he using a HAMMER ?
Nah bc I did this and not a single one worked
Those look like Panasonic 18650's like the ones I use in my single cell flashlights.
I don't go cave man style on the laptop batteries.
all 6 cells is good... you just break your son laptop baterry
Just can't believe what I've seen! Seriously? I take hundreds of these apart. You DON'T KNOW the condition of the cells inside. So, #1- wear decent rubberised gloves. Sometimes a dud cell sweats toxic exudate that you really don't want on your skin. #2- Crack the case seams in a bench vice...much less chance of screwing the batteries. #3- get some micro snips to cut the nickel straps and management pcbs. The cell casings are neg charge, and twisting the pos charge straps to break them, can abrade the thin insulation cover and cause a nasty current short. And those broken nickel straps are bloody sharp too, so keep the gloves on until the cells are trimmed and cleaned!
Sound advice!
Not nearly as dramatic though ;}
don't use a hammer, just twist them and wear gloves
Your like Ed's Computer Repair RUclips video!
Of course he didn't have your luck
When he was was finish smashing computer . Just as he expected it was Fucked!!!
bro... .pleas don't use a hammer it could damage 18650's and booooom
OMG!! I though that the red ones it the best not the green
It varies by manufacturer and you even get copies.
Yes, typically, red does conduct electricity better than green. The electrons are actually afraid of the color green.
John Smith Hahaha
Thank god haven't seen smoke lol
Slow down Dude!
Lol
Consider they are 2amp cells. Who cares beat the shit out of them. For e bikes. They MIGHT work on a 24v system nothing more. Or Flashlights OR. put 1000together power bank. Cheap cells good for that
that brute force xdd

savage lol
Are you sure the hammer is the correct tool to be using here? I thought maybe a pneumatic road drill an steam roller combination would be better???
Good to know there's professional guys out there keeping us rite. Wouldn't wanna F up our precious and highly volatile battery packs
A steam roller is a great idea! I'll do that in the next video ;}
