Riding DART Orange Line from Belt Line to DFW Airport Station - Full Trip Experience!

- On a surprise trip to the airport, I decided to use DART's Belt Line Station Park-n-Ride as an inexpensive form of airport parking. Enjoy my ride to DFW Airport!
Recorded with Sony HDR CX-440 and Zoom H1 on 6/4/2018
Dallas had an extensive light rail/ interurban system until the depression. Some of it lasted until after WWII. Nice to see it coming back, even in a small way. You have to start SOMEWHERE?
That ticket machine sounded like the arcade game Galaga for a second. Haha.
Thanks for posting! Once again, you've posted another awesome video. I love riding the DART virtually. I went and rode red line(in person) down to Mockingbird the other day...just for the heck of it. The electric motors in these trains really pack a punch. I rode facing backwards on the return trip, and it impresses me just how quick these things clear the station. The whole DART commuter rail network is very aesthetically pleasing in my honest opinion when compared to other rail networks around the globe. It's a crying shame that DART always seems to be strapped for cash when it comes to rail expansion, and I personally wish they would add more subway sections around the metroplex. They seem to simply default to existing corridors to avoid creating chaos out in the suburbs, but I do believe more folks would use the system if it were more accessible. For example, I live in the West Plano/East Carrollton area, and I so wish I didn't have to drive east for 20 minutes just to catch the rail in Plano. And sadly, while the new Silver Line will be highly convenient for suburb-DFW Airport commuting, it will be out of the way to drive south down to North Dallas or Addison to simply then backtrack Northeast up to Cityline-Bush just so I can head down to Dallas on my preferred corridor (Red Line). A strictly East-West line for changing between Green and Red/Orange would be a dream come true. Once again, however, , DART is going to go with the existing corridor and cheaper option.
Glad you enjoyed! Unfortunately, they'll always be chasing cash problems as long as driving is as cheap here as it is. Why take the train to work when I can buy a running car for $1,500? There's a bus stop across the street from where I live and where I work, but the commute goes from 2 hours to 35 minutes if I drive. It creates a problem for transit operators when cars are so cheap. Ideally, ridership will increase, allowing for more frequent service, making it a better option for riders.
@@NTxRE Very true! Spot on.
Dallas would b my first stop! First I'll ride the DART to/from DFW Airport!
Hey man! I was thinking about taking DART to DFW but i have oversized and overweight luggage. Is the walk from the DFW stop to the gate check-in really long? DART website says its a 14 minute walk!
I suppose it would depend on the gate you're flying in to. I'd say it's more like 5 minutes to get to air conditioning, with a small uphill grade to climb. So small that I only mention it because you brought up the suitcase. Where you enter is Terminal A for American Airlines, so if that's where you're headed, great! Otherwise, I suggest going through security anyways, and using the SkyLink train to get to your gate. Hope this helps, safe travels!
@@NTxRE Thanks for the reply!
It’s very sad that the train is empty even though it’s very clean, fast and efficient!
Some days are much busier than others. DART is alive and well! At least with electric trains they can afford to run them empty.
I sure do hope so
I wish we had something this beautiful up in ohio, I would definitely use it every day off to my work!
I actually live about 20-30 minutes from the farthest reaches of DART's area, but the next time I move for work it'll likely be perfect for the train, and you can bet I'll use it. Hopefully your local folks get something together for you. And if you're lucky, it'll be electrified. The last thing we need is more diesel burning stuff.
@@NTxRE yeah always wondered why they aren't building the silver line to be electrified hopefully they'll change that in the future
oh, clean you say.....
The SFX when the credit card transaction is denied and when time is about to expire and receipt confirmed sounds like an 80s arcade game lol
The whole TVM is an 80s arcade machine haha
I plan on riding on this when I visit for the very first time. From the airport to my hotel downtown.
Perfect! Enjoy your trip! As a heads up, there is typically one train left parked, and the next arriving train's operator will swap to the other, and take it back downtown. So don't worry if it sits empty for a good amount of time!
@@NTxRE I appreciate it!
The reason why it’s being sent to LBJ/Central is because it’s stops there on weekends and it goes to PARKER RD on weekly Rush hour
AroundDallas TX that’s true
Not sure if anyone else said this, but about the “red line LBJ Central”, of course, it’s not a Red Line. The Orange Line was originally supposed to terminate at Lawnview station so that’s also why you can see an Orange Line Lawnview on the current rollsigns, and about the Red LBJ Central, maybe the Red Line was supposed to only go to Parker Road during rush hour but for some reason the Orange Line never went to Lawnview so maybe instead of making an Orange Line LBJ Central they used the red one but still they did end up making an Orange Line LBJ Central LED after all
Good to know! I'm sure they've done plenty of testing to figure out what works best for the riders and continued in that direction. I bet it's a real headache to change and reprogram the roll signs, hence the new LEDs. Thanks for sharing!
@@NTxRE you're welcome
I don’t get how they fit all those station names in the sign. I have lives in DFW Dallas for a long time and I loved riding the train and everything about it but that’s one mystery that I must know
They're all on a roll! It's printed so that the inside and outside displays have matching stations. As the machine cycles through options, you can briefly see upside down stations, which would normally be displayed on the other side of whichever you saw it on.
@@NTxRE Ohh okay, thank you for telling me this and the mystery is solved and I will remember this so thank you so much again 😊
Im getting ready to move here soon (Dallas) coming from Ohio and wanna save up to buy another car leaving the old one behind
Hi! Great video. A couple things. The sign was set to LBJ/Central because the train will stay as an ORANGE line, but since ORANGE and RED share the same tracks on the other side of downtown, sometimes ORANGE trains just use RED signs. but while the ORANGE trains you saw at belt line went to Parker Rd, they would be the same to do so for the day. Once it is not longer "Peak hours", i.e. rush hour, ORANGE trains just go to LBJ/Central and turn around there. The color on the sign is usually interchangable between RED and ORANGE for those shared stations. To my knowledge, trains never change line colors except for emergencies, or special events.
also, that faint beeping tone you hear at 11:02 is actually the train telling the operator to slow down, as he is over the speed limit.
Thanks again for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for the info, that makes sense! I also did know about the beeping, I hear it quite often. Plenty of speedy operators, and plenty of annoyingly placed speed restrictions, haha!
Popsicle Penguin, what special events cause the lines to change colors? I attended Comic Con two years ago and the train was PACKED with convention fans. Would that be an example of a color change?
@@largol33t1 The color change isn't for events. The Orange and Red lines share the same route between West End (Downtown Dallas) and Parker Road (Plano). Parker Road is the terminus of Red Line, and Orange Line during peak hours; while in off-peak, Orange Line trains terminate a few stops earlier in LBJ/Central. It won't be much of a problem for passengers to see the eastbound trains using the red signs "Parker Road" or "LBJ/Central", some drivers may not be that particular on this. And in some lighting conditions, it's not easy to tell between orange and red without comparison.
How do you know on which side to wait for the train? I can't find any signs saying where to wait for which line so I always mess it up yet no1 else does
Under normal circumstances, the trains operate like cars, on the right side of the "road"... Same applies to stations with 3 platforms. I also pay attention to the signage, which tells me if I'm waiting for the right train in the first place, and my sense of direction will point me in the right direction too
YES! I've been waiting for this video!
Zach Scherme Skylink comes next! 👍
How much did they have done? The best thing I can see is that the sign has LBJ/Central
Wow this is light years ahead of Pittsburgh's, Port Authority.
Haha facts. Why cant we get a line to oakland or something?
It's actually Orange Line for LBJ / Central Station. Not Red Line. It's supposed to be Orange Line for LBJ / Central Station not Red Line. It's wrong. Will say it’s Orange Line / Red Line to LBJ / Central Station.
Great video. Hoping to visit Dallas. It gives me an idea of what to expect. Although I appreciate the DART is going to DFW
Yes! And the TRE also takes you to Dallas and Ft. Worth from the airport, but a shuttle bus is needed to reach the TRE station from the terminals.
I've always wondered why northbound Orange Line trains only go to LBJ/Central Station and use a red sign...
OPM1961 The destination sign is actually orange in color. It only goes to Parker Road during rush hour. Otherwise, it goes out of service at LBJ/Central, then pulls into Sherman Pocket, an area north of Restland Rd, south of Buckingham, named for Sherman St. that goes near the Texas Instruments area.
We reverse ends, wait for the north and southbound Red Line to clear, then pull back into LBJ/Central, and go back to the airport.
Will say it’s the Red Line/Orange Line to LBJ / Central Station.
Does anyone sometimes hear a man yelling kind of sound when the trains show down? Growing up in Dallas, I used to always hear it but not anymore.
I can't exactly imagine the sound you're describing, but I'd be curious if you ever find it in one of my videos. Let me know if you do!
It's cold out soon, when will there be Dart cabs, line up, it's time, sharecabs too, for demands
Why did you not go to North Lake College??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????!?!!!!!!!!???
White line?
They'll use the white signs on the trains for special routes!
Congrats 19k views!
Thanks!
I didn't, very nice!
Very useful video!! Thanks
You're welcome! Glad it helped!
I always wondered that I've been to North Lake college
Charlotte went to those TVMs a little more than a year ago. They are horrific.
I have a couple videos actually from Charlotte and I noticed that too... They work pretty well for us down here, but ours are quite a bit older. Perhaps the design has gotten worse? I've never had any major issue with them.
That moment when Dallas has better trains than NYC
I agree ours are the coolest but NYC is pretty good too! When their r179s are working that is
@@NTxRE Yeah. Meanwhile in Austin we are lucky to have a small commuter line 😩
@@NTxRE Yeah alot of us love the R179's also known as the lemonn
Where do you swipe your pass?
If you're talking about the GoPass, the refillable plastic card, you scan it at the platform before you board. The paper tickets though don't need to be swiped when you're on a train. Just keep them with you as proof of payment to ride. Fare inspectors randomly check passenger tickets. Thanks for watching!
@@NTxRE So can anyone board the train with or without a ticket? Also, are you able to purchase them on-board?
It's illegal to board without a valid fare, but there's nothing stopping you except the occasional fare enforcement officer. You can buy paper passes at stations, or you can purchase a pass with the GoPass app at any time (although you're technically supposed to have it before you board)
planning to take this
It's an easy and quick way to get parking at the airport. Enjoy your flight!
we got a face reveal at the kisser
*kiosk*
There's plenty of them if you look... I'm not trying to hide, I just don't feel like I should be the subject of my videos!
Man gotta to love your videos
Parece muito com o metro de São Paulo
Can someone b my Tour Guide please?😁😁
sure hit me up at jopchumba@gmail.com will for sure take you around with public transport you will enjoy
Empty stations, empty trains and empty pockets from funding them. It's surreal! Overpriced Antiques in a 21st century world where mobility is quickly changing to on-demand/doorstep to destination mobility, V2X and micro-mobility. These long distance, few stop, commuter rail systems make more sense than light rail that's excruciatingly slow with stops every couple of minutes. Both cost way too much and have too little ridership.
