I’m with Flip it’s strictly about the art form…Models were an accessory & nothing legendary. Hip hop is about rapping, break dancing, fashion & graffiti. It’s not about women who were there to look pretty. I’m sorry but that’s a reach from Melissa.
If the vixens should get recognition then the writers, the male dancers, the videographers, the editors, the makeup artists, the editor, the director, the choreographer and everybody involved in the hip hop world deserve recognition too. Video vixens are like the cars in hip hop videos, they were good eye candy, but hip hop would have existed without them.

NO ON I REPEAT NO ONE EVER SAID "The music is trash but the video models made me buy the album, watch the video etc". They were just icing on the cake.
I'm with flip. 1) Video models are not inherent to hip-hop. Modeling in general is its own profession, where the work is to model for compensation, whether it's fashion shows, video commercials, movies, product displays, or in this case music videos. 2) They didn't "contribute" to hip-hop. Once hip-hop became a profitable industry, they were employed. There's a difference. In other words, they didn't help build this genre. When this genre became lucrative enough, it became one of the various employers of models, using their talents to create visuals for the music.
In Melissa defense, the video model became a very important part of the music video for a looooooong time so I understand where she is coming from. However, it was about the art

The video vixens should be acknowledged, in some way. It was a major wave. KING Magazine and the like made a lot of money from putting many of the women from our favorite videos in the spreads. There's a lot that's been missed as well. A multi part doc that goes into these underrepresented parts of hip hop would be dope
She correct in what she’s saying but it has absolutely nothing to do with 50 years of hip hop. She even said it herself “all I did was walk up to a car” If she wants acknowledgment throw another event for the video vixens like ole girl did lol.
Hip hop is art form, video vixens are accessory to music videos, magazines, selling clothes, marketing n advertising but I don't see why they need to acknowledged, are they musicians n artists, hello no

I’m not a feminist at all. To be fair, she does have a point. Video vixens made a lot of music videos in the 90’s and 2000’s made videos iconic. A lot of songs blew up because of some girls in the videos. It may be small, but they did have a contribution.

Melissa is correct. I remember how impactful some of the video models were for a lot of songs and videos. Nelly’s Hot in Here, Mystical Been So Long, DMX What These B**** Want, Jay Z Change Clothes, & Excuse Me Miss… so many more. King Magazine, Source Magazine, Smooth Magazine…all the videos I named I remember because of the models in them.
To each it's own, but I don't ever remember a rapper getting famous because of the video vixen in their video. Video vixens are no more important than the models on lowrider magazines. Unfortunately they are used to help boost a product. They are not the product themselves. Now if a video vixen were to transition her career as a video girl into selling other products similar to the Kardashians then you could speak to maybe their business impact. But their impact as a whole on hip hop itself would be unchanged regardless of their inclusion or not. Lastly, What impact would you acknowledge them for? How do you quantify that?
Should we acknowledge the jewelers who sold the necklaces, car salemen who sold the Bentleys, the cameramen who shot the videos, etc. video vixens were extra in videos and that’s it. There’s only like 3-4 of them that anybody remembers. Cut it out.
I get both sides of the arguement, but lets be real... every industry has the ones that work and keep things going behind the scenes and in the scenes but yet others get most of the credit. like actors... main actors always get the credit, but yet there were literally 100's of people who made that actor look good and keeping things running smooth but has NEVER gotten the credit for it. thats just how it is. there is no way to honor everyone, otherwise if everyone is important than really no one is important.... just the way it works. but everyone does deserve some form of credit for their part in something done.... but also, in this particular issue, the video vixens were not even what the hip hop was about, and this might sound bad but honestly they were simply a tool used to sell the persona, really no different than adding the fly cars and jewelry to it. but on a side note Flip had me on the floor the way he started laughing out loud Melyssa was like "and whats so funny?"....😅😅😅😅
Almost every rapper in the 90s wore jewelry from Jacob the Jeweler - should his contributions be included in the 50 Years of HipHop celebration? I like Melyssa but video vixens didn't make Illmatic or HNIC classics. Rap's golden age wouldn't have been any less golden without video vixens.
