The New Haven Solari Board; still kicking

- We are at New Haven Union Station, where we are graced by the still existent Solari Board, which hangs above the escalators down to the tracks. This board was supposed to have been replace back in the Spring, but for some reason, has continued to exist. This board, apparently, is still not long for this world. Enjoy the sounds of the noise it makes as it flips, as well as all the different destinations. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The video was taken on October 6th, 2011.
I always loved these, because no matter where you were in the station, you’d hear it and know something was changing.
Very true. I can remember these at London Waterloo station many years ago & as a boy I was fascinated by them & how they worked & made that unique noise.
So much easier to read than LEDs.
@Brock Israel it's "google it" not Google for it.... And yes no one gives a damn
@@H.EL-Othemany they're bots...
The Solari board was donated to the Danbury Rail Museum. The entire system was replaced with LED panels that can be programmed from a computer terminal. The Solari system had stopped functioning at the stairs to each of the platforms and the main board could not be modified to accommodate new information. The new system is ADA compliant and can display new stations without building new cassettes.
Well it’s better than them throwing it in the trash
I wonder how long that "D" has been stuck. I was there 2 months ago and it was like that.
Or UNATYENDED
So glad this is what I see every time I go to NYC
I remember Victoria station in London had one of these in the 80s and it was constantly flapping such were the constant amount of departures
Wow, I'm amazed at all the destinations that they flipped through1 Hyannis, St. Petersburg (FL), Tampa, Miami, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Chicago... wow
Because I’m guessing it once served to these destinations from New Haven Union Station or will serve these stations in the future.
Thank you for documenting this. Miss it.
You're welcome.
Even if I owned the world's busiest, modern airport, I would still insist on these being used in every terminal
How efficient~! Did anyone notice "UNATYENDED LUGGAGE"? Garbage in, garbage out! LOL
Too busy looking at the metro nordh
U N A T Y E N D E D
I saw one of the 'coming from' options is Montreal... probably been a long time since they've used that one
Frankfurt airport still has the Solari board and perhaps the largest in the world that is still running today.
i love solari and pragotron
Amazing tech
Loving these older Split Flap displays - would love to hear what you think the Split Flap displays we build!
Miss those days and as they are almost dead nowadays.
"Unatyended"
I caught that as well.
Hi! I'd love to use 10 - 15s of audio from this recording for a creative project. How do I get in touch with you to discuss?
@murjax For the Anniversary Train? Yeah, about that long. The weekend before that the D wasn't stuck.
Is this one still there? The one at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia came down on Saturday. 😔
I'm not sure but the reports in Philadelphia was that the one at 30th street station was the last one up and working in any Amtrak station. Now as you said it's gone.
It’s been replaced with LED board, I’m pretty sure they have this board in a museum in new haven though
It’s a shame these aren’t used anymore. It was cool when they changed. Unfortunately, today it’s just a boring screen with nothing special.
@rbjplay13 Nah I was there in mid August a couple weeks after the anniversary train. So I guess it hasn't been stuck for too long.
Missed opportunity for the title: it should've been "Still Clicking"
Acela Expdess?
@milky27oreo Sometimes the people who work the board tend to make a bit of mistakes, here and there. No complaints about it.
Honestly, I 'm surprised things like this still exist. It's all extremely unnecessary in 2022, but I love every moment of it
It’s not unnecessary. It’s more energy efficient and easier to read in daylight than modern digital panel.
@@rooneywayen More energy efficient than a modern LED panel? Lmao... These require stepper motors for each individual indicator. They are more energy efficient when they display the same information without changes but when (like on a train station) they constantly need to change what is being displayed they will draw a whole lot more energy than a standard LED display...
While these are easier to read in daylight for some, they are impossible to read without light, so at night the added cost of lights also further drags power consumption anyway.
Awesome technology, but saying its more efficient is just simply not true.
Enjoy this while you can.
This has been gone for a good 3 or 4 years now. It was replaced by an LED board which can be seen in another video, so yeah....nothing left to enjoy now (except for an LED board).
😥😥😥
They recently replaced the one from 30th St Station I'm Philly. Fortunately it's now at the R/R museum in Strasburg, Pa.
not typos that D clearly isnt moving at all when they start to change , its stuck, and the only people who can fix these boards have to be flown in from italy
And that's why they're on their way out. With video flatscreens, there's nothing to get stuck and in the event of total failure a replacement is only as far away as the nearest Walmart.
Those boards are pretty easy to fix, and the fix is far cheaper than replacing a video flatscreen.
This used to be true, check out the modern Split Flap displays on our page!
@@OatFoundry Ayyy nice
@@mrs2691 In material cost this is very true, but you also have to pay the person to come fix these boards and then it is much cheaper to send a maintenance guy to replace part of an LED panel instead of having someone who needs to be trained on the split flap boards to come and fix them...
IIRC Solari is in Udine
@m3andros It's actually pronounced, Unattended baggage."
Did they run out of letters to spell "unattended"?
the T flipped too far and went to a "Y"...
Hi,
where to buy this Split-Flap Departure Board
tupai62 good luck with that...
Why does it have st petersburg
Do you know if they sign is still there or has it been replaced?
It’s been replaced by an LED board
What's with the typos?
Split-flap boards (especially old ones) were prone to one letter being 'flapped' to the next one, which is the most likely explanation, or they actually can't spell.
These are so cool, but it's obvious why they were replaced with screens. They were so imprecise, they could show an entirely wrong time, departure number or status
Roger Levy that's a *train* departure board, not flight...
Ewps. Mistyped. My bad.
Roger Levy No worries, everyone makes mistakes :)
ACELA EXPDRESS
AND METRO NORDH LOL
Mistakes: "Unatyended", "Nordh", ... and possibly the hour too which is extremely important, I don't trust that? LED screen is better?
You forgot acela exbdess
Unatyended?
Acela expedess lol
Una-tyen-ded
Acela expdess
Metro Nordh? Is that a typo?
'Unatyended'? Sounds like how a Midwesterner would say 'unattended' ... ;)
"UNATYENDED"
METRO NORDH
What a pity it was barstardised with that horrible red LED clock. Yuck!
someone cant spell...
