    I have assisted in the production of a similar short film with the help of re-enactors. I also acquire, restore and deal in WWI/ WWII kit and could pick up small errors all day long, however, remember this is shot in a day and produced in 2 weeks. I think it’s a very nice little production. Imagine what this producer can do with a budget, time, historians/ research, props, locations etc. We can all show off with our historical accuracies but some of us don’t, but appreciate the effort. The boredom and blandness is very accurate indeed as in most wars. Well done to all involved.

      Neil Meekums where do you buy the German costumes I would love to have one so I could make a film like this

    • @CaptainCorr
      @CaptainCorr 5 лет назад +4

      We didn’t buy them for the production. We approached and selected re-enactors at the larger UK military shows. Re-enactors will pay far more attention to detail and accuracy than producers and researchers. They already act a certain amount within the shows and groups. It’s much easier than buying everything. They may even allow you to film using their vehicles.

      the grenade looked a lil bit plastic, also the paratrooper casually threw the grenade through the gap in the armour. Weapons were a bit wrong and I don't think you would step out of a burning bunker like he did, isn't it supposed to be normandy. There was no smoke in the sky, the floor was swept and clean. this Maurice is totally right. ^

    I saw just a few inaccuracies here:
    1. The regiment number until the shoulder pads of one of the soldiers - if no one else is using them in his unit, why is he? They were barely ever used in WW2.
    2. The soldier who, from what the story tells, isn't very enthusiastic about the war and just wants to go home, has the helmet decals. After the order was given out to remove them all in 1939 (or 1940, I don't remember right now), typically the only soldiers who kept them were so diehard patriotic, they would've jumped the opportunity to get transferred to Waffen SS if they could.

These details hit the mark for we historians and are a great element in your presentation. I don't think the acting and editing are all that bad. You'll refine it easily with experiance and practice. Just dont try to mimic something you've already seen just for lack of creativity. If it was so easy, the over budgeted and over acted productions from hollyweird would be better. The story is fair up to a point. D-Day was a time of stark terror for most of the German troops on the Atlantic wall. Minutes went on for hours. Hours became weeks. There is no feeling of "Time dilation" here. The battle, what there is of it, is rushed as if to get to an end quickly because filming is expensive, rather than to make a statement about the loneliness that goes on forever broken only by short intervals of blood, terror, and loss. Most of the characters are underdeveloped, and in the end Bunker 611 isn't a place we really know or care about, any more than the people inside it. I liked the letter part of it, because it gave a "speaking role" to at least one of the characters, without the burden of excess dialogue. You need to rewrite the beginning completely. No mention of D-Day, France, The Wall, or what the audience knows is coming. Because once the audience knows this, everything is cold and set in stone. Just have six young kids at a new post seemingly nowhere except a forlorn sand pile (remember the OkW thought more of Pas-de-Calais as an invasion site.) Then, as it was that morning, all hell broke loose. What they do, and how they react should be the action, drama, and tragedy, of their story. The end also has to change obviously. Someone must live to tell the story, even if he dies at the end.

    For those commenting on the Gewehr 98 being fired by an American in semi auto. This was a cinematic limitation ive made films for a while and let me tell you, when they used the wrong rifle, (they know) they clearly couldn’t afford, or find an M1 Garand prop, so they just substituted it for a different long piece of wood and metal and had to hope that it wouldn’t be too noticeable in the shot, but Its not like someone comments “wow bolt action in semi auto? INCORRECT, American holding a german rifle? INCORRECT” well yes, but no because the gewehr 98 was basically “acting” as a m1 garand

    You only fire a rifle inside a bunker once because immediately afterwards all your deafened fellow soldiers would be kicking your head in. Likewise, standing next to or immediately in front of the muzzle end of a large calibre gun when it fires is also a once in a lifetime move. The blast would shred anyone that close.

    Was reading the book dday by Antony beevar, the was a darkly hilarious bit. It was in the chapter about the airborne assault on dday. The part described a bunker that the Americans had to take, inside there was 6 polish conscripted soldiers and only one German. When the allies approached the bunker they heard shouting, followed by a single gunshot, then laughing. The polish then came out of the bunker unarmed surrendering, they weren’t gonna die for Germany so they shot the commander apparently.

    Despite all the negative comments this short film was at least at two points historically right, not every german soldier wanted to fight for his country and the bunker was in the atlantikwall. Made a good exam film with little money.
