Going no contact is a thing…sad but true…and necessary for peace of mind.

I am 24, I have a job and two master programs that I'm going to. My parents will call me and message me to see where I am and with who. They become helicopter parents as I grew up more and more and I can't understand why. Neither to say, I will be moving out soon with my girlfriend and I'm going low contact because the constant fights are very bad for my mental health.

Mine did that until I moved out last November, I was 27 with a full time job and my mum still had access to my bank account; I’m now living with a friend and have a better relationship with my mum because we’re not constantly at each other’s throats

My wife and I are both low/no contact with our parental models.
With my parents, we are relatively no contact not due to any tension or disagreements, but because we recognize that video calling for 30 minutes to an hour every two weeks gets us all up to speed with everything important so there is no real need to talk more than that unless something big comes up. If there were more news we would talk more frequently but we all feel like we have a healthy balance.
With my wife, she was largely "raised" by her controlling, narcissistic older sister who treated her more like property and a resource to be exploited. It took me almost three years to open my wife's eyes to the fact that her sister was not a good person and that she needed to recognize that she has a family of her own now and can no longer bail her sister out whenever she makes stupid decisions. She stopped paying her sister's bills (something I was not happy about when I found out as I am the sole earner) and her sister went ballistic. My wife went no contact after realizing that I was right about her the whole time and has been working on recovering ever since.

How did you manage to get your wife to realise that her sister is a narcissist?

5:17 I was about to say the same thing.
It’s funny/ironic when parents do this and be WAY too overprotective only for that to be the exact cause their children cut contact or go low contact once they move out.

I’m not really sure if my parents counted as Helicopter parents but they were strict as hell, it also didn’t help that at the time I had undiagnosed ADHD and didn’t really pick up on social cues. Years after moving out I had to move back home and they tried to go right back to treating me like crap but I just laughed at them, I got my step dad so worked up once he was actually acting like he was gonna fight me but thankfully my Mom stopped him when she noticed I was gonna bash his head in with a coffee cup if he tried. I remember at one point later on that he threatened to take my tv out of my camper and I told him “that’s fine, your TV would look much nicer in my camper” and again my Mom had to calm him down.

So growing and to this day I have epilepsy, that triggered my Mom to question me every where I went. If I sept too much time in my room she would throw open my door. Who cares if I was going through puberty and discovering me. But my older brother got all the space he needed. Fast forward to college and I am in theater I tell her I have to turn off my phone we have tech rehearsals this week and I am getting home late meaning 3am she stays up until I get home. Then yells at me because she has to be up soon and I said it’s tech week and this will be happening. I started my job and she expected me to write my schedule down on her calendar so she could plan her sleep schedule. This whole time I said you never did this to older brother you have to stop I am suffocating! Her response I only care. Care for him! After I get married she still expects to know when I am working so she knows when to call. I look her and say if you don’t stop you will only talk to husband and I will not talk to you and you hardly talk to older brother. PLEASE respect my boundaries! My Dad gave me a hug and my Mom kinda stopped

4:35 Meaning helicopter parents were reading this thread of people venting about helicopter parents. Absolutely no sense awareness. 😅

My mom had to eventually learn that she can’t control what I can do or what shit I got into. She doesn’t like it, but it’s my life!

3:08 I feel like is just a normal parent cuz not responding for up to an hour or more is insane unless your phone is dead or something

Do you always have your phone in your pocket? If I'm at home, my phone is in the bedroom and I'm not checking it for hours. Sometimes I don't feel like taking it with me so it stays home. I think being always in contact is insane.
