Oh. Yes. The Constellation class! This is one of my favorite Starfleet ship designs, and its a shame how little screen time it got. I really wish they would do a movie, or a series taking place sometime between the 2290s and the 2350s, after The Undiscovered Country, and before TNG. Some of my favorite ship designs, like the Constellation class, and the Ambassador class were at the peak of their service during those years, and they used the blue and green LCARS displays (like the one you guys used in this video), which is my favorite. I know a lot of my fellow trekkies would consider this akin to blasphemy, but personally I think the Ambassador class looks so much better than the Galaxy class, and the blue and green LCARS looks so much better than the purple, pink, orange, and yellow design on later Starfleet ships. So needless to say I would really love a series, or a movie like a prequel type thing with young Picard commanding the Stargazer, or else following the exploits of the Enterprise C, culminating with its destruction at Narendra III. It would be awesome to see Picard in his younger days, as well as the Stargazer when she was still in service, and looking clean and pristine, and there's also the Federation-Cardassian wars in the 2340s and 2350s that would make for some really great stories because the Cardassians are a most worthy adversary. Thanks for doing this one, guys! Live long, and prosper!
Great Ep 1. "The Battle" always made me want to see a mini-series of Picard's earlier adventures on the Stargazer. I always thought this was a cool design. Good job, guys!
I agree. When I first saw this ship, i fell in love with it. I was like "that's a beautiful ship". Awesome also. I had to have it. And now I do, from Eaglemoss collections. Love their line of ships. Very well crafted and detailed.
The Constellation, especially with all the line-interrupting bulges and battle damage, looks like a musty old war horse of a ship. The extra nacelles, dual impulse hard points, and extra saucer thickness also add to the mystique, for me. I think they did an excellent job crafting this ship's specific lore, because it looks and reads like a failed experiment, another attempt by humanity to throw "more power!" at a problem as a means of overcoming it. The lore also reminds me of real-life otherwise failed military machines that were meant to tackle a big problem, but ended up far too expensive, poorly run, and ill-conceived, and were re-purposed into some modicum of usefulness with new tech bolted on. From some angles it looks menacing and more war-like than other Federation ships, and from other angles, it looks ungainly.
The Constellation and Cheyanne classes were always my favorites, for many reasons. Four nacelles and improved warp cores allow for better, 'thicker' shields, as well as better overall speed and power. Excess power could be routed to other systems, and in combat, that alone would be worth the cost of the additional nacelles. Since one could have shields fully charged, and fire both phasers and torpedoes, AND be traveling at maximum warp, all at the same time. Add in the added maneuverability given by the doubled impulse engines, and one has a hard-hitting, hard to kill, fast, maneuverable ship that can take on enemies far larger than itself. Just a few thoughts, Speaking Frank-ly
🖖😎👍Thanks guys this is truly one of my favorite designs of all time the Constellation Class indeed, Very nicely greatly well done and very wonderfully informatively explained and executed in every detail way shape and format indeed Sir's!👌...
Great episode, guys! I'm looking forward to part 2. Any show that been around as long as Star Trek leaves a lot of loose threads, and the Constellation Class certainly ranks high among them. There are so many possibilities for this ship with all it's shuttle bays, but the writers never saw fit to explore those possibilities. Although there's no canon to support it, I always thought that this class of ship would be good for setting up mining colonies, or listening posts along the Neutral Zone. Speaking of loose threads, that might be a good Top Ten topic: Things we only saw in one episode, that we'd love to see again and learn more about.
Well but there are lots of breaks, leaning against the counter, and bathroom breaks in there of course. I worked in retail for years and of course you can find a place to sit down in-between customers. A lot of stock rooms have basically been turned into little break rooms, if you're lucky someone even have a little Nook that you can lay down in behind some boxes and there's always something back there depending on who's the manager that night, you might have some food or a couple of cocktails until you hear somebody pushing paging someone's your department. Sorry I was taking a nap in the breakroom how can I help you? LOL
Great episode as always! I love the TMP look and the quad-nacelles. When you start looking closely at it, I can understand some criticism it gets for a kit-bashy look, namely the obvious pylon halves glued to the aft of the primary hull, that serves no purpose other than to fill space. But the overall design of the Constellations is pretty cool. I'd love to see a Constellation refit with Excelsior parts. Or better yet, a Galaxy class version.
Originaal Constellation was Probly named after USS Constellation, last sail only ship build for the US Navy which currently resides in Baltimore Harbor
Love this ship! I wish they would recast ST6 and insert in in SpaceDock! I like to think that this ship was a Fallback if the "Great Experiment" Excelsior Class Failed
you guys got the first part right This class of TMP ship was made as a tribute to the USS Constellation (constitution) The AOY TOS version of this ship would have to be the Gemini class.
if I were to design s bridge with standing stations. I would include swivel stools (like old fashion drafting tables... that deployed from adjacent panels or directly up from the floor this would allow personnel to maintain and alert posture while having the ability to take the strain off their legs.
You guys missed all the added on phasers to the saucer! All the elevators from the Connie Refit saucer were replaced with single phaser emitters- giving this ship an extra six phasers around the edge of the saycer- with at least a four pointing aft
US Navy bridges have a lot of crew standing at their station. That said, those ships don't get tossed around like starships. Yesterday's Enterprise has a shot of Riker dieing when he's tossed around the bridge and breaks his neck.
Again, I think the more durable/combat focused design of the Constellation means the multiple nacelles could also be there for combat survivability. A Klingon or Romulan ship knocks out a nacelle, no problem. Just redirect all your warp power to whichever set is still active to create a stable warp field.
I guess it has a similar deflector philosophy as the miranda class. But with 4 warp nacelles, 2 dishes might've been cool or a big dish, a two split dishes, etc.
It's interesting with the torpedo tubes - there is a plate of some sort in front of them in its appearances, so it made me wonder if they really did have that many launchers, or if those structures are actually something else that just look like constitution class launchers
Impressive design. But I always wondered if the nacelles was space more apart and positioned slightly differently. Would it improve its overall appearance.
Still some audio inconsistencies. It sounds like the captain's mic has more dynamic range. It makes the commander sound slightly muffled. I would say get a new mic or tweak the mids and highs. This was a great episode, love the design of the saucer on the Constellation class, the thickness of it just seems way more realistic than most other ships. Thanks guys!
The Constellation as a kid watching TNG I always thought "Screw the Galaxy class! When i'm a Captain I want one of those bad boys!" Just generally more interesting and cool looking to me.....
When I first saw this episode back when I was younger I was not a fan of the Constellation class ship.....Over the years watching the episode several times over and getting the Eaglemoss model it has become a favorite as it is in the command lineage of Picard.Although on the Eaglemoss model it seems like the saucer it not to the scale that it should be......any thoughts?
A note on standing on the job; At my current job the employer has provided motorized desks that can raise our consoles to standing height, and there is a lot of encouragement to do this for several hours at a time because standing is considerably more healthy than sitting for the entire day. I usually remain standing most of the 12-hour shift, really only sitting to eat. So perhaps the standing positions on the bridge of the Constellation class were designed with that in mind.
In this video, Captain Foley mentions that it doesn't seem "fair" or "productive" for a crewman to not have a chair for their watch on the bridge. I'd like to point out that there are many stations on US Naval ships that don't have chairs. On my old submarine, the Fire Control, fathometer and Navigation stations had no chairs. Watches are 6 hours long on a submarine and if a Starfleet vessel has a 4-shift rotation then so are theirs. It's not far-fetched that some stations on a starship bridge would not have chairs. As for the rather spartan bridge of the Stargazer, I think that's part of its charm. It just makes the Enterprise D's bridge look all the more luxurious by comparison.
One thing about the four nacelle configuration, and this was meant to address the underpower issue, Is that 1 pair of engines would be used and the other pair would be offline until the active pair needed to be taken offline for maintenance.
The galaxy class had rear torpedo launchers. They showed it in the first episode when they try to blind the Q sphere to let the saucer section escape after separation.
I always thought an acceptable refit for the constellation class would be a deletion of its undersized twin port and starboard shuttle bays, converting them into additional deuterium storage tanks to improve the classes overall operational range, she was a bit of a fuel hog after all, and small cargo bays. Expand the volume of the aft most shuttle bays by some 10-15% to compensate for the loss of the p/s bays and accept somewhat newer shuttlecraft designs such as the Type 6 and 7 as seen in TNG. The most extensive portions of the refit would involve a complete replacement of the ship dated eps conduits and relays to maximize energy efficiency and distribution, this is critical for the second part, deletion of the main bow shuttle bay and replacement with a small dedicated navigational deflector/focused long range sensor array which is flanked on both sides by modified Miranda class heavy phaser emitters with a decent amount of firing arc on both the x and y axis, to further emphasis the classes favored tactic of charging in quick to target area or formation at warp, lay down a heavy barrage of torpedo and phaser fire, come about, warp away for distance and attack the target area or formation from a different direction.
On the rear torpedo tubes, that's probably why Starfleet invented the phaser strips for a 360 degrees firing arc. If you play the Star Trek: Armada III mod that is actually one of the benefits the Federation has over the other factions.
another great episode one of my favorite ships from Star Trek even though it had a lot of teething problems there is just something about the look of it that scream Star Trek and I cannot wait for part two.
I am warming up to this design. I prefer it to the Movie era Cheetah class fast destroyer. however I think its too underarmed to be classified as a battleship, perhaps as a fighting frigate or a Crusier but not a heavy cruiser like enterprise, perhaps a heavy destroyer. I like the versatility . Great Job Stuart and Samuel.
It always annoyed me that in the TNG episode where Picard is mind controlled into re-fighting his battle on the Stargazer with the Enterprise D that the crew have to try and find which ship is the real one. If you know about the Picard manover you KNOW which one is the real one, it HAS TO BE the one closer to you, that's the only way it can work. You don't need some special sensor sweep to tell you which one is real.
This ship grew on me. No, you do not need a deflector dish. There are canon designs that do not have them. Not to mention the Klingons and Romulan ships never had them.
I know many Terkies refer to the Constitution class ships as Connie's but in the US Navy the nick name "Connie" was used in reference to the USS Constellation CV 64.
I always thought the Stargazer was the ugliest ship, but the TOS version, seen at 7:00 and again at 9:30, is possibly my favorite design ever, even more so than the Constitution and/or Federation class vessels. I can imagine it as a battleship, well scaled up and very powerful, making full use of 4 drives.
Good job, guys! A lot of fanon in here, but that's okay for a ship that doesn't have a lot of established, canonical history. My compliments on a well-put-together vid! Something I want to add about aft torpedoes: I don't personally have a problem with the lack of aft weapons on smaller ships like the Constellation. This mainly comes from my submarine experience. Modern American submarines have between four-to-eight forward torpedo tubes and no aft-facing weapons. I just figure if the ship is small and maneuverable, aft weapons aren't as critical.
Sources aside, I don't see this as being contemporary of the Enterprise refit. I had personally figured that the revised warp factor calculations came into being during the Ambassador-class era, aka the beginning of the TNG design aesthetic, and that four old-style (Wrath of Khan era) nacelles were needed to match the performance of TNG nacelles. Yes Constellations are old, but not THAT old!
I'm surprised that, in neither this video nor part 2, the lack of a visible navigational dish was mentioned. TBH, it bothers me a lot when I can't see a deflector, since the deflector is needed to travel faster than light. Eventually I found some schematics telling me the two domes on the ventral fore were dual deflector emitters, which calmed me down...
The Bridge setting suffered from antiquitech. The Star Trek V came out with a bossed up bridge computer operating system. JLP's Stargazer was gypped! It should have looked more like this particular bridge up grade for the Ambassador Bridge a website I cannot post the link for here for some reason.
form what I have been able to gather, star fleet uses a navy style watch cycle... which is 4 hours on 8 hours off so well you do stand for 8 hours a day, your only standing for 4 hours at astreach
+Trekyards Yeah, that's fantastic! I was pleased to discover last year that other people had discovered my model and used it in the renderings you showed. halfblog.net/2014/06/24/uss-pioneer-voyages-lightwave-starship-model/
Those 4 nacelles restrict firing arcs behind the ship, Anthony more maneuverable than this ship would just have to spot in behind it for a guaranteed kill.
I always felt the Constellation class had too much flak from fans. At some point when I'm able to get models again there's a 1/1000th resin version of the kit I want to get.
I must admit I'm a bit anal retentive I do like the rules of line of sight and warp engines have to be in pairs. The Stargazer has to be one of my favourites. I tend to prefer the loss of a navigational deflector as long as the warp engines are line of sight and most of the engines are in the same plane like Enterprise and Excelsior.
Oh. Yes. The Constellation class! This is one of my favorite Starfleet ship designs, and its a shame how little screen time it got. I really wish they would do a movie, or a series taking place sometime between the 2290s and the 2350s, after The Undiscovered Country, and before TNG. I guess it is kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good place to stream newly released movies online ?
@Brady Grady I watch on flixzone. Just google for it =)
i really wish polar lights would make a kit for this ship, it would be a lot of fun putting this one together, a cool starship design

In Star Trek Beyond, when they first arrive at Yorktown, you can hear a man on a loud speaker mention the Stargazer.
Liked Beyond a lot! Felt the most like Trek.
I clapped!
LaserAirsoftWeapons Ha ha yes. It was pretty cool.
I understood that reference!
I never noticed that, wow.
ever work at a retail establishment? standing for 6-8 hours is pretty normal.

Foley: "Yes, Stars. And those stars are sometimes in the shape of what we call...?"
Me: "Spheres!"
Foley: (facepalm)
Me: "...What?"
Love this class of ship, wish I could get a t6 version in star trek online

The aft torpedo tube is between the impulse engines.
I rewatched "The Battle" this week and the Stargazer was HUGE (as could be seen when Enterprise grabbed it with a tractor beam).
you guys got the first part right This class of TMP ship was made as a tribute to the USS Constellation (constitution) The AOY TOS version of this ship would have to be the Gemini class.
My lady friend and I were watching the episode where this class first appears, and sure enough, it shows up on Trekyards. Awesome.
Love that sensible, no-frills bridge. As for standing-only workstations, perhaps a localized decrease in artificial gravity aids the personnel.
+Timothy Page Also excessive sitting can be unhealthy!
if I were to design s bridge with standing stations. I would include swivel stools (like old fashion drafting tables... that deployed from adjacent panels or directly up from the floor this would allow personnel to maintain and alert posture while having the ability to take the strain off their legs.
You would think that the extra nacelles would give them greater ability to tailor their warp field. Great for when you need to tow a ship!

Took a while for me to warm up to the design, but after getting into and playing SFB, it gave me a new appreciation for the look and feel of the ship.
the iconic Picard Maneuver in STO became known as the Warp Mirage.
those new eagelmoss models messed up making the saucer too thin. :/
Just love how the makers of Star Trek spend so much time and effort into the development history of these scifi ships :D
Impressive design. But I always wondered if the nacelles was space more apart and positioned slightly differently. Would it improve its overall appearance.

Remember. It's only Part 1.
+Trekyards Yes, sir!
+Trekyards Thank YOU! :D I been waiting for this one ~HUG!~ ^_^ My fav trek ship :D
And STO calls it a "heavy cruiser".
The Constellation as a kid watching TNG I always thought "Screw the Galaxy class! When i'm a Captain I want one of those bad boys!"
Just generally more interesting and cool looking to me.....
At first I hated this ship class. Now as time has passed, I really like it.

I could have sworn that in the first broadcast of that episode they missed redubbing one of the uses of Constitution Class.
The galaxy class had rear torpedo launchers. They showed it in the first episode when they try to blind the Q sphere to let the saucer section escape after separation.
I thought it was just LeVar that said Constitution. I love learning these new facts :)
I always thought an acceptable refit for the constellation class would be a deletion of its undersized twin port and starboard shuttle bays, converting them into additional deuterium storage tanks to improve the classes overall operational range, she was a bit of a fuel hog after all, and small cargo bays. another great episode
one of my favorite ships from Star Trek even though it had a lot of teething problems there is just something about the look of it that scream Star Trek and I cannot wait for part two.
The Stargazer Class on STO for a episode
With that amount of hangar space I wonder if any were turned into cargo ships after Starfleet decommissioned them
I am warming up to this design.
11:25 there's a bit of a rendering issue where you can see through the hull side to the underside of the saucer.
I loved my Dakota-class variant before I went on down the line. Still have that cruiser fully kitted out in case I want to go back to it in STO.
The sad thing is, the only commonly available model of the Constellation is the Eaglemoss one, and it's inaccurate because the saucer is far too thin.
It always annoyed me that in the TNG episode where Picard is mind controlled into re-fighting his battle on the Stargazer with the Enterprise D that the crew have to try and find which ship is the real one. The Enterprise was called "The Big E" as I recall, yes?
Yes
StarGAYzing it up hard.
Man I didn't realize how much the scale of this ship was off on that episode...WAY too big
One of only two(to the best of my knowlege) canonical quad-nacelle ships alonside the Cheyenne class.
I always thought the Stargazer was the ugliest ship, but the TOS version, seen at 7:00 and again at 9:30, is possibly my favorite design ever, even more so than the Constitution and/or Federation class vessels. I can imagine it as a battleship, well scaled up and very powerful, making full use of 4 drives.
this is a very cool ship , i loved seeing it in TNG. would of bin nice to see more of it tho, good work guys
Good job, guys! A lot of fanon in here, but that's okay for a ship that doesn't have a lot of established, canonical history. My compliments on a well-put-together vid! +Darin Wagner I keep thinking they got rear launchers myself, it looks like it does on the model.
Sources aside, I don't see this as being contemporary of the Enterprise refit. Yes Constellations are old, but not THAT old!
Switching between nescells, sounds like MDS or Active Fuel Management in cars today
Was the Hathaway preserved for the Starfleet ships museum.....
Yet again a great video! I like the Connie! Thanks so much!
Extra Nacelles create blind spots in sensor sweeps, creating a dangerous exploit for a canny enemy.
14:39 What do you mean? Even the the pre-refit constitution class star ships had aft torpedoes, as seen in the episode "In a mirror darkly part 2"
loving the mars class
STO has it available and the C store version has the Picard Maneuver console. :D
My favoritee
Ships are, excelsior, constellation, Galaxy, soverigen, Akira, intrepid, and nebula. Probably many more
Using only two nacelles would allow the ship's remaining nacelles to be serviced while still at warp. Try that with just two nacelles on a ship.
I'm surprised that, in neither this video nor part 2, the lack of a visible navigational dish was mentioned. TBH, it bothers me a lot when I can't see a deflector, since the deflector is needed to travel faster than light. Great Opening you two stargazers!
In the show TNG the ship looks as if at least 400m long. So what is correct?
Ooh, you showed my own USS Pioneer design. :D
Hope that's ok. Lol.
+Trekyards Yeah, that's fantastic! I was pleased to discover last year that other people had discovered my model and used it in the renderings you showed.

Beautiful ship btw.
+Trekyards Thanks. I know it splits opinions, but it was a labour of love and there are some details in it I'm really proud of.
+Foomandoonian I quite like it myself :D I think I used it for some 3d art of my own before. :)
Those 4 nacelles restrict firing arcs behind the ship, Anthony more maneuverable than this ship would just have to spot in behind it for a guaranteed kill.
I love this show.
Thanks Captain !
It has no deflector, though I think maybe the addition of two additional nacelles might compensate for it somehow. Just a guess!
I would assume it was designed well after constitution, but on par with consittution refit
I loved this!
I would think 4 nacelles would be useful for cargo haulers for extending the warp field around attached cargo modules.
how do you guys do your Hotmail account spell wise I have some old deck plans for the constellation class and some old schematics of her also
John Luck Pickerd... Master tactician.
the Jem'hardar stand and they seem to be damn productive in destuction lol
Question to ask, answer and discuss in Part 2:
Where is the navigational deflector on the Constellation class cruiser?
Thanks in advance!
Probably in one of the many sensor domes located on the bottom of the saucer.
As switch-wear is often worse then use-wear I'd reckon that they used all 4 nacelles at lower power.
P.S.: there's a rendering error at 12:37
If Starfleet ran their ships anything like the U.S. Navy, a standard shift (watch) is 4 hours.
I know the Klingons do 4-5 Hour shifts with 3-4 Blocks of shifts per Ship Day
As for Starfleet? I presume it to be similar...
Most Starfleet ships have three 8 hour work days/watches usually called Alpha, Beta, and Gamma Watch.
So do U.S. Naval sailors work 2 four hour watches per day?
@@joerogers9413 it also depends on what the commanding officer chooses to have implemented.
@@henrynorcrossii3363 True.... Captain's privilege.
Very informative. I like it.
I always felt the Constellation class had too much flak from fans. At some point when I'm able to get models again there's a 1/1000th resin version of the kit I want to get.
Where is the Deflector Dish? I was looking at mine in STO and for the life me find it
I've always liked this ship. probably because I like redundancy but to be honest its the cool refit style nacelles that do it for me.
It's probably one of the ugliest ships I've ever seen.

OK, Millennial...🙄
@@charlestaylor253 Not at all. Have you seen the Stargazer-A from Picard? MUCH better.
I'd love to see an episode on the Cheyenne class.
Best example of kit bashing!
what model is that hes holding? is it the eaglemoss version or something else?
Where did you get the design history from? I can't remember that being from the actual show.
Always thought the front was a deflector array not a shuttle bay. Where it the deflector dish/array.
What is the ship in the background at 4:19 ?
I must admit I'm a bit anal retentive I do like the rules of line of sight and warp engines have to be in pairs. The Stargazer has to be one of my favourites. I tend to prefer the loss of a navigational deflector as long as the warp engines are line of sight and most of the engines are in the same plane like Enterprise and Excelsior.
