    Thought the fact that even Ann didn't sympathize with Kong at all made it all the sadder.

      This is where the remake screwed up. Not only is the pacing better in the original, only the audience sees the true tragedy of Kong.

    • @anthonycrnkovich5241
      @anthonycrnkovich5241 7 месяцев назад

      Yes, that was key to the original film's tragedy -- Kong dies with a broken heart. It brings the film full circle for the final line "It was beauty killed the beast" to make sense and resonate better than it does in the '05 remake.

    Don't think of the portrayal of the natives being 'racist'--they did, after all, fight Kong with spears while the sailors (armed with guns and all) scrambled to escape

    • @docsmithdc
      @docsmithdc 5 лет назад +9

      Agreed.I actually thought that the "natives" demonstrated a measure of dignity and a bellyful of courage.Also,he did not mention the very great Negro actor NOBEL JOHNSON who portrayed the chief.

      Doesn't help the fact that Charlie the cook tells the crew "Crazy black men been here" so yeah, product of its time?? Yeah it's awkward to say the least.

    Your review is SPOT ON friend. I couldn't say it better.
    This film is utter genius and sheer brilliance, it's mind-blowing that it's made in the early 30's. I've seen it so many times and never get tired of it.
    "One of the greatest movies ever made and one of the hallmarks of cinema" = FACT.

      i absolutely hate to be the “uhum acksually” guy but that plesiosaurs is in fact a sauropod, it was in the water because the general scientific consensus at the time was sauropods were too damn heavy to support their own weight so they had to live in the water to survive, which we later obviously learned was untrue

      @anthonycrnkovich5241 7 месяцев назад

      First of all, I like Charlie in KING KONG -- he lends a bit of humor as someone who doesn't give two hangs about some crazy voyage and just wants to go back to China. His role is bigger in SON OF KONG but that's only because less happens in that film.

    WOMEN OF THAT ERA NEEDED A MAN? You need to brush-up on cinematic history. There were independent female portrayals in the 1930s. There were man-manipulators, man-saviors. You probably never saw Davis, Garbo, Dietrich, Lombard, Colbert.. In 14:31 you say that they should have thought about bringing gas bombs in their initial journey into the jungle. THEY DID> Your clip has a gas bomb stopping a charging stegosaurus. There is another scene when Denham is shouting after a sailor who stupidly took the bombs with him as he is desperately running away from a dinosaur.

      Besides, Ann was abducted by a giant ferocious ape! She needed rescuing as ANYONE would! KING KONG is a movie to be taken on face value, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's what makes it so damn great!

    Not to sound like a complete pedant, but the Skull Island village and wall in the 2005 film was not all CGI. Yes a lot of it was, but there were miniatures (just like on Lord of the Rings) and full scale sets for the actors to walk around in. But I do agree that the scale and grandeur 1933 wall and gate set is very impressive, not just for its time but still to this day. Still, I really enjoyed your review and how enthusiastic you were, its definitely one of my favourite films!

    It is my understanding the Arabian proverb at the beginning was just something Cooper made up.
    I first saw the movie in 1968. I never once thought the natives were portrayed in a racist manner. They were treated as a civilization and talked to in their own language. They seem very civilized and living as well as they could be given the circumstances. The indigenous people of the 1976 version were borderline civilized while Jackson's 2005 people were simply terrible.
    At an initial screening, Cooper found that the 'spider scene' totally stopped the pacing of the movie, so he cut it. Good decision. The 2005 kept it and, yes, it completely stopped the forward momentum of the movie. Plus, it was ridiculous.
    I've never heard that the man portraying the native was almost killed under Kong's foot. I can see that happening, but where did you get that information?

  • @ryangreen2469

    Yes, I agree this is the one that stands above all others.
    The 1976 and 2005
    We're good in their own right, but, 1933 will always be the Masterpiece!
    One thing I noticed now, being that I just watched Jurassic Park few weeks ago, is the Brontisuares coming up out of the water, in the JP. version it's portrayed as only eating vegetation, not carnivorous as shown in this film..
    Well, as you said , it can be overlooked and just enjoy pure Saturday matinee fun munching on Hot Butter Popcorn !

    I NEVER forget seeing that Brontosaurus for tHe first time in JURASSIC PARK it was facinating to me & awsome, especially as i was expecting some rubber dinosaur puppet like the one's seen in- THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT.BUT was I wrong.
    And I'm guessing it must have been the same for audiences way back in 1933
    the spectacle and wonder of this film never dates, and when it was released it's safe to say it had the pool to it'self there wouldnt have been another film like it

    My favorite character in this whole movie is the Chinese cook because one I laughed when he was yelling everybody on deck! and two the fact that he found Anne’s necklace or bracelet I forget which and he surmises that Anne was captured and lets everybody know if he hadn’t done that they would not have known that Anne was captured by the tribe in time.

    I agree about the corny dialogue, I don't know if your aware of the ships course, but it is infact somewhere out towards Sumatra/Borneo in the far east where their supposed to be heading originally on a junk ship, hense a part oriental crew. he's there to add character, sea captain's in this era would need to be bi-lingual as their sailing all over the world, this is a trading vessel bringing back- tea, rare animal species etc from the lesser known parts of the World. kong mistakes the train for another animal threat & so attacks it.

    No. King Kong is not a "Kaiju character". The Kaiju are a thoroughly 20th century concept, who represent absurdly oversized & overpowered entities of nature with world ending abilities. Kong does not meet this standard. Kong is actually a product of late 19th century "Lost World" literature that became popular in a post-Darwin society.
    For this reason, I've long argued that forcing Kong into Godzilla's universe for an ultimate battle between the two is a bad idea. It's because King Kong doesn't belong in the Kaiju genre. The only way to make it work would be to compromise and alter the characters so much that you'd inadvertently be losing something central to them in the process.
    Kong represents the wonders that nature can produce when left alone and isolated from man. Godzilla represents nature's fury on a scale so immense that it can destroy mankind; as retribution for things such as exploiting nature, global warfare, and man's reckless use of fundamental aspects of the universe such as nuclear energy.

    13:28 You might say that these scene is better consider this is more Natural with grapling and kicking than punching.
    However don't forget this scene is also dated consider the poster of the T-rex. Yeah you might think I may nitpick, but the reason för Peter Jacksons were little more realistic, he prat med Lottie more of T-rex and added those in the remake, even gave the name of the three fictional Dinosaurs Kong fight from T-rex to Vastatosaurus Rex, meaning Ravager lizard/reptile King(Dinosaurs/Pterosaurs and Plesiosaurs are reptiles, not lizards. Maybe update that in the 2005 film, and research some of the creatures names ) because of the evolution of the Tyrannosaurid family.
    P.S Stop calling Pterosaurs(example Pteranodon) as "flying Dinosaurs". Sure they are flying reptiles, but just because both species lived together in the same periods in Mecozoic era and are cousins, doesn't mean they are Dinosaurs. There's a bit difference.
    Anyway, love your videos, and hope you reply on this, just jeep in mind that I trying to help you from misconceptions.

    It definitely isnt fair to say cgi is lazy or doesnt take as much effort as practical effects when its the exact opposite. Any vfx artist will tell you. A good example is that in godzilla 2014, if they had animated godzilla entirely on one computer it would've taken well over one hundred years to complete even with godzillas bogus screen time amount.

      Even if it was deep, hitting water from high up is just as bad as hitting concrete

    I prefer the 2005 remake, mainly because of how creepy Jackson made Skull Island & it's denizens.

    It's a pity "The Spider Pit Sequence" was cut from the original. Some of the original footage was used in "The Black Scorpion."

      Some of the original models were used in Black Scorpion, but not footage. I'm now of the opinion that the spider pit scene was never filmed. In a discussion with Fay Wray in the late 80's that my brother set up he asked her about it (as we were curious ever since still shots occurred in early 70's horror magazines). She stated she had never seen or heard of that scene/footage (of course, her character wasn't involved in the scene) but she had seen cuts prior to initial test audiences and was at initial previews and it was never seen, let alone shown and then cut as the story goes. Other evidence suggests it omitted from later scripts and while some models were done and test stills taken, it was determined that the expense and effect on pacing warranted not pursuing it. Other stories of test audiences reacting so strongly so it had to be cut are inconsistent and is not really any more horrific than other elements. There was a lot of hyperbole and legends that grew around this sequence, but I'm now of the opinion it doesn't exist because it was never actually filmed. I would love to be wrong, but that's my conclusion after almost 50 years of trying to track down all details.
