This exact thing happened to me too, clipped a branch and tried to pause the drone, at which point it just went up and away. Proceeded to run into another tree and then crashed hard, breaking almost exactly like yours. Had to send it in to repair. Very interesting to know this is not just me
This happened to me while reviewing my Avata 2! TLDW: Disarm MANUALLY (2x press start/stop button) if you impact in manual mode and the drone reports Sensor Error. Using RTH or Normal/Sport (even the hold button!) before disarming could potentially crash the drone... If you see the home position in the sky, then you will know its bugged. 😉
OMG I had this happen to me a couple of days ago... I was doing power-loops and grazed the ground too closely. The drone came back up in the air, so I hit 'Pause' so I could compose myself... and the drone just flew off to the left and smashed into the ground, bending the frame and breaking two props
They are still investigating it. Their initial response was that they concluded I was giving full throttle on the motion controller… the fact I was clear in manual mode to start with and there’s no manual mode on the motion controller - clearly didn’t occur to them 🙄🙄🙄
@@dronewilder5234 it's been around a month, hasn't it? I hope you got your drone back though. I'm sending mine in tomorrow (missed the Friday collection time)
@@playsbyshady oh the drone replacement was super quick - I ended up just using my care refresh and got the replacement within 24hrs! Can’t fault that - just hope dji can’t work out what actually went wrong. My guess is that the impact causes a compass setpoint error
Hitting a branch was 100% user error, however, the drone going into a steep dive and crashing uncontrollably when I switched into normal mode isn’t. Had I landed the drone in manual mode, it may have not sustained any damage. The point of my video isn’t to winge about a bad day flying, but to ensure others don’t make the same mistake.
@@dronewilder5234 of course and no disrespect meant by my comment. I think overall the Avata 2 is just a really nice acro mode experience. Alot of negative review aspects seem to be by reviewers that are treating it in the same breath as a 5 inch quad which it definitely isn't. Keep up the great work. 💪🏻👍🏻
@@garethjones1 it’s cool mate, I actually have a lot of positive things to say about this drone and like you say, it serves its purpose - one that isn’t to pretend to be a 5”. Overall I’m very happy with it. Also, care refresh express is “incredibly” fast at replacing drones now
I'm going to do a video on this because I think it is important for people to see it's not like I don't know how to fly this drone inside well and I flew through my legs with no issues multiple times before this even happened so who knows.
@@AtortAerials ok hope your leg recovers alright. I tend to keep spinning props well away from that region of my body 😜😂. You’d think the prop guard design made it quite safe though.
@@dronewilder5234 No i never used RTH. My issue comes when you fly manual und take a fast turn. The drone then often roll way more so that it could crash. This happens very often but you have to fly a bit faster.
@@DiraPictures oh right - yeah I did a video on that recently - it’s an issue we had with the avata1 and unfortunately it’s still persistent with the A2. I’m still convinced dji should be able to fix it by looking at the speed controller demag compensation, timing and idle speed. It probably airflow stalling a prop when it’s spinning at minimal rate to facilitate a yaw turn
If it wasn’t for the rest of the damage I might have tried that - not much I can do about a broken motor arm and scretched lens though. Care refresh replacement cost me £39 and I got my replacement drone within 26hrs - very impressive service
I haven't had any issues like this. It's been nothing but amazing! So, much better all around than the Avata OG is. I have crashed it a few times, but been very lucky. After your 1st crash you should have just brought it back and examined it before continuing to fly. You might have had something from the 1st crash that was still on the drone and it helped cause the 2nd crash?
Not sure if it’s clear from the video but bringing it back to examine it is exactly what I tried to do. It’s the fact that I switched it to normal mode for landing and it then crashed uncontrollably that I’m trying to flag here. Also worth mentioning that the exact same behaviour happened twice. No signs of any prop obstruction etc in either case. Looking at the flight log after I made this video there does seem to be a difference in the compass (yaw) heading compared with that I saw in the video so perhaps the impact created a compass error which will only affect the drone in sports and manual modes obviously as it’s part of the position hold system.
I can't imagine owning something like this without care refresh. Its literally 3/4 of the reason I'm buying an Avata 2. My last $150 bind and fly quad would have been a $90 fix and I'd have to risk soldering it with zero experience. If I send my Avata 2 into a wall at 60 mph I put it in a box and pay $50.
Was it a hefty impact though? I’ve clipped a few small branches and twigs (as you would) and it was fine in those instances. Flight data suggests the yaw heading was way out when I switched to sport mode so maybe the impact caused an error in the compass
@@jeremiblurton_yt even if they put in a safety measure to restrict switching back into normal mode while there is a compass error- that would be a decent move.
@@ko_da_life yeah I somehow feel they don’t understand this issue fully. In my case they claimed I was pulling the motion control trigger - which is impossible as I was clearly flying manual mode with the remote 3 🤷🏻♂️😂

I’m not suggesting it’s a piece of crap- I mean it’s definitely less sturdy and still has an element of the yaw drop issue the avata 1 had but I do think it’s a good drone for the money. Yes, I do have Dji avata 2 , also I do have the first Dji avata and Dji fpv. The upgrade is beautiful no question. But the design of the goggled three is piece of crap ? Why? (1) the goggle keep on rubbing your eyelash while you blinking causing me loss focus on the goggle (2) gets fog up so easily while you tilting your goggle .
