  • This is the first prototype of a camper van ventillation system using 3 x 140mm PC fans and an external pwm speed and LED controller.
The fans and controller are sold as a set by Thermaltake, and the power input to the controller can be easily connected directly to a 12v power source.
Having an external controller allows the fan speed to be adjusted without requiring power and control from a standard PC motherboard, and this product can run the fans at either 800 or 1400RPM.
The fans and controller draw just over 3 watts and shift either 30 or 50 cubic feet per minute depending on fan speed. For a camper van, this is not enough to adequately cool the van on a hot day, but it should be a good low-power, low noise solution to allow air cycling throughout the day or night when the weather is mild or warm, and to keep the space ventilated while you sleep and avoid condensation inside the camper.
The LEDs can be set to a static colour, cycle through 256 colours, or be turned off.
The fans are screwed into a marine-grade plywood board, 4mm thick, and cut to the shape of a recess in the rear door of my van. before being finished, the board will be sanded smooth and painted. The controller is friction-fit, but will be sealed with silicone to stop it from dropping inside the cavity. The fans will vent into the door cavity, and a low profile aluminium vent grill, painted to match the colour of the vehicle, will be mounted on the outside of the rear door. This vent grill has a flymesh backing which should help to keep insects out, and will be higher than the mounting point of the fans, which should prevent rain, noise, or external light from coming directly through the rear door. The vent grill has a higher passthrough surface area than the fans, so there shouldn't be any significant backpressure issues inside the door cavity.
I'll post updates as I begin to install the fans and vent.

Hey, the fans I used were thermaltake Riing 3pack, there are many different variants of these, but I bought this type from PLE computers in Australia. Probably available worldwide from amazon or newegg: www.ple.com.au/Products/634506/Thermaltake-Riing-Duo-14-140mm-RGB-TT-Premium-Edition-SP-Fans-3-Pack-

how did you go with this in your camper? was it roof mounted, like an extraction setup?

Hey man, no it wasn't roof mounted, it was fitted into the back door, with an offset inlet through the other side of the door, and it worked really well. The two speeds of the fans, plus an additional powerful roof-mounted vent fan gave me a really low powered way to vary the intake of air. In winter, I'd keep it on low to keep the air fresh and reduce CO2 buildup, and it was quiet enough to sleep with it on. I would not rely on this as your only source of ventilation, but it's a great low cost option for low power, low noise, 12V, always-on ventilation.
