  • 'Everybody is not ready to receive this knowledge. It is not meant for everybody. One must work hard to understand these songs. The meanings cannot be made available casually. When you get it so easily it becomes mere information. It is not a trial.' - Parvathy Baul

If there is an embodiment of intensity, Parvathy is it. As our friend, as an advisor, as a fiery challenger, she has brought us into deeper touch with ourselves. This recording was made as part of our week-long immersion with Parvathy at her home and akhada on the outskirts of Trivandrum in September 2011. She warmly welcomed us, housed us, fed us, sang for us and spoke to us with great depth and insight about the Baul path and about life itself. An experience that we still carry with us.
Parvathy Baul is a Baul singer and saadhika, painter and storyteller from Bengal and has been a disciple of Shashanko Goshai and Sanatan Das Baul. She divides her time between her home in Trivandrum, Kerala and the Baul ashram she has built near Shantiniketan in Bengal. (parvathybaul.com/)

I so get it. Things that matter are difficult or impossible to articulate, explanation limits and vitiates what is all enormous, all encompassing. Silence speaks best

Thank you for these conversations. You have brought forth a whole corpus of knowledge which is so intriguing...ulat basi and sandhya bhasha have scope for further exploration. Maybe they are not exactly the same as the terms suggest; yet have parallels. Paradoxical and absurd it may appear on the one hand, but sandhya bhasha may further give scope for finding meaning in between. So profound.

As I was lying in bed, the meaning of the riddle came to me. As I cracked the riddle, the moment I fully understood it, I became aware of the extent of my colossal ignorance, Here is what I understood. First the false "I" was born - aham. Then the doctor smacked my butt and I took my first breath - soham - that was my elder brother. After practicing this for many years I asked where did this breath come from, I began to seek my beginning, and my father was born. Going deeper, I began to wonder also about that 'progenitor'. I began to see that my 'father' too had an origin, and my 'grandfather' the Paramatman was born. And when I contemplated this, my mother, Mahamaya who can never be understood, was born. When I was an old man with a grown-up grandson, who was ready to join with his beloved, another "I" was born - that is the 'Aham Brahmasmi', the 'Tat Tvam Asi', the grace that comes at the end of human experience. We can understand all these things on the cognitive level, but until we dance and sing in the Lila we do not experience the actual wisdom to which the riddle refers.

      For me ulatbansi is like
Kabir telling these funny poems which are meaningless like maya.
The meaning you are searching isn't there like the things you involved and giving meaning to isn't there it's all maya.
It can sum up from a Kabir poem by Kumar Gandharva - 'Ram niranjan nyara re Anjan sakal pasara re'.

In Bengal Tantric Hinduism or Shaktism and Tantric Buddhism has common platform and ideas interlinked to each other including Bauls. This Interlinked foundation was encouraged more during golden age of PALA rule of Bengal. So much so that deities of Shaktism like GODDESS TARA and KALIKA finds its place in both Bengali Shaktism and Tantric Buddhism until today
Ancient and medieval Bengali monks played significant role in spreading of Tantric Buddhism to more east including what is today known as Tibetan Buddhism. That same tradition continues today in Bengal and Eastern Indian region in spite of many storms passed by.

What you may consider "debauchery" could be a dismissal of ignorance and narrow prejudice. By conventional standards Krishna was a debauchee and philanderer who left his wife and ran away with another woman.
