While often called boats by Great Lakes Boatnerds, they are technically classified as ships. Many legal defintions reference vessels larger than 197 feet (60 meters) length overall (LOA) are ships. So both terms are equally correct. It just depends where you are coming from and what (and to whom....including international) you wish to convey.

I like to inform people that they're really boats. That's a point of pride for locals all around both sides of the Lakes.
