Eli, you may want to clear up the difference between IaaS (from the SPI framework) and Cloud Networking. Also Haas (Hardware-as-a-service) can include networking functions.
Hey Eli, is this the same concept with facebook ? When you explain different computers connecting with each other minus the LAN, Facebook is the thing that comes to my mind :P
It is best to use a personal WIFI portable device. It is not free and there is an monthly subscription fee but it is secure for VPN and internet access. Also, the advantage of using it anywhere and not limited to WiFI hotspots. Then, connecting to VPN and doing cloud computing will be very safe. Your company should be able to loan you such a device and pay for the subscriptions. :-)
