    The reason the four segments have never been reprinted came during The Cursed Earth storyline where one town was predicated on Colonel Sanders and the other town worshipped Ronald Macdonald. Both town’s feuded with each other over which restaurant god was better. Speedy Alcaseltzer and The Jolly Green Giant showed up in the strip. I don’t think the strips have ever been reprinted in their original form due to worries of getting sued by the corporate rights holders.

      IPC were sued and settled out of court, they agreed never to print the "offending" material ever again. BUT, in 2014 the parody use protection law came in to effect in the UK and in 2016 the whole thing was reprinted in all it's original glory. It called Cursed Earth Uncensored.

    One thing it's kind of lowkey in the movie that I really love is that the Judge System is completely useless. When Dredd and Anderson are leaving central, Dredd says that they can only respond to about 3% of calls. So, for all their supposed brutality and efficiency, they are effectively useless.

    • @boobah5643
      @boobah5643 27 дней назад

      How useless it is depends on how the public reacts to the Judges. One can easily imagine a public that ignores the Judges where they can only respond to 1% of calls, because there are many more calls but no more judges.

    The only reason I think some could even consider Judge Dredd being worse than Stop or My Mom Will Shoot is because of the name and reputation of the titular character and comic.
    With a name like Stop or My Mom Will Shoot, you at least know for certain its gonna be laughably awful.

    Dredd was so badly marketed, I accidentally ended up advertising for it when I was a camgirl. Some guy, with a clearly Judge Dredd handle, came into my camgirl chat, and since I maintained a very chatty, nerdy community, he found out about the film when I mentioned it. He was so thrilled he went dark for like 15 minutes as he googled the thing.
    And if someone is SUCH a hyper-fan they put it in their p0rn-browsing handle, and THAT GUY doesn't know about the movie the year it's coming out? You done messed up.

    Comic books weren't really part of my childhood so I had no preconceived notion of what Dredd was. I didn't mind the Stallone version, it was meant to have a more comic book feel in the same way that the Burton Batman's did. To me the best element was actually Armand Assante's performance in the same way Nicholson's performance added weight to a comic book role.
    The 2012 version was a much more enjoyable movie with darker tone. To mirror the Batman comparison, it was much more Nolanesque. Even though I enjoyed Lena Headey's performance, I think your short breakdown of her portrayal makes me appreciate it that little bit more.

    As a life long Dredd fan I loved Karl Urban's portrayal of the titular character, if only they had the money to make Mega City One what it should of been rather than looking like downtown LA, though I know it was filmed in South Africa. Having compiled a library of Dredd graphic novels over the years there is so much that could be done with the character, so many stories to tell.

    To this day i do not understand the hate for the sylvester stalone version.
    The mandatory comedic relief character would have been a thing regardless due to studio meddling.
    Stalone didn't do a bad job at all.
    The Studio's aim for a PG-13 rating is what made it what it was.
    Only now people are realising that aiming for a PG-13 rating movie is a bad thing after blockbuster went out of business.
    Before that any R rated movie could be profitable on the home VHS market but DVD-streaming killed that market.
    So now we're stuck with PG-13 movies or academy award aimed movies.
    There is no R market for studios so we now get them rarely.
    The story in the Stalone one was good but the pg-13 aim is what did it in.

  • @rhisands2063
    @rhisands2063 28 дней назад +7

    That 3D fatigue thing really kneecapped it. I remember it hitting theaters, and it was at the point where people were not just tired of subpar 3D, but angry at the increased ticket prices and the way so many movies were moving to a potentially 3D only release. And Dredd walked into that perfect storm with near enough only a 3D release, and no back up plan if that didn't hit. Their whole US release strategy was to say it had been a UK hit, and it wasn't. They shot themselves in the foot over it. Tragically it was one of the very, very, very few 3D movies to actually use the effect as a medium in itself. If I had seen the 3D in a 2D release, I'd have gone back for the 3D version. I never watch the 3D version, but I would have for this, because I still wish I could have seen the 3D version on the big screen. If they did a special re-release anywhere near me, I'd be there. They had the perfect chance to double dip the audience, and squandered it.

    • @wiredtardis

      I don't think so as there were standard 2D showings of the movie. I first saw it in 2D then went back for the 3D. During the time, it was clear that a September release did the movie no favors and was losing badly to the latest Resident Evil movie. When trying to recommend it to randos, they were generally turned off by the prospect of never seeing Karl Urban's face.

    It just kills me that we haven’t managed to get any form of dark judges off the pages with the exception of the ps game. You’d really think they’d be chomping at the bit to use them for films hell even an animated film. With the amount of dc animated films no one has tested the idea of judgement on Gotham
    It’s a sad state of affairs that rebellion hasn’t done more with the 2000ad properties so many brilliant concepts not just dredd but rogue trooper, nemesis, flesh etc could be brilliant films or tv shows.

    You know, I’ve always wondered why after the huge success of Batman 89, studios went for adapting comics that the general public never heard of. It never occurred to me that the specific studios had all the rights tied up. Makes me wonder if that wasn’t the case if we would’ve gotten the modern comic book boom in the 90s with Spider-Man and such.

    • @aceshighdueceslow
      @aceshighdueceslow 28 дней назад +2

      Well, a large reason for rights differences had to do with the fact that only DC had a sole production/distribution company to go through. Marvel was all over the map through the 90s and weren't part of a legacy media giant like Time Warner, yet. The history of Marvel movies before the Disney buyout shows a company that really wanted to break onto the big screen, especially with the success of both Burton's Batman movies, but didn't have the money, the clout, or anything like that to truly make a go of it on their own. The cartoons of the 90s did help, but the companies that bought character rights weren't all the same, so Spider-Man movies are owned by Sony, and Sony doesn't want to share their spotlight with Fox, or Universal. The Disney acquisition in 2009 changed all that.
      Now, why Time Warner did fuck-all with their other big DC heroes during the 90s and 00s? Couldn't tell you. Why did it take almost 30 years after the first Batman movie to finally get a Justice League movie? Why so long for Aquaman and Green Lantern? Probably the same reason why they're fucking up with it right now, none of the corporate suits know what the fuck they're doing and have the thinnest skins in the world. I could hazard a guess that DC was also hit by the comics bubble bursting, same as Marvel was, but the DCAU was also thriving.
      Then again, I also recall WB's absolutely stupid Batman Rule to avoid market oversaturation and other stupid crap. Say what you want about the Snyder films, but for a brief 6 years, there was a cohesive vision for a DC film universe, and those films were all successful in their own way. While Disney stayed the course, WB/DC kept blinking and chickening out and time has shown how much it cost them, no DC film has reached the box office heights of Aquaman since its release

    Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, Strontium Dog, The VC's, Ace Trucking, ABC Warriors and even the return of Dan Dare - these and many more were my sci-fi diet growing up and all from 2000AD. I actually had a collection of about the first 200 including issue 1 but one day my mum was clearing out and thought they were rubbish so dumped them!
    Both Dredd films were disappointing to me; the Stalone movie got MegaCity 1 right and the tech looked much more like the comics, especially the Lawmaster bikes and hover bikes; the ABC Warrior robot was great. But there were also all the well-known-by-now flaws.
    The 2nd movie got the character of Dredd right and Karl Urban was great, but they turned it into an R-Rated gore fest which inevitably meant it would have only a limited success. Worse, it did not reflect the style/tone of the comics which were, obviously, not r-rated and leaned much more into a satirical comment on a dystopian future rather than people being shot through the head point blank with accompanying blood and splatter. The Dredd of the comics was rough - he killed people for minor violations of the law, but it was never that, at least not in the time I read it, which was for about the first 15 years or thereabouts.
