Valve tone down a lot of things in term of graphics and also uses many tricks to make it looks good in VR without any performance issues, if not because of VR, Half-Life Alyx will be even better with ray tracing, better lightmap and real-time reflection. But yeah, they have some of the best programmers and designers in the industry. No doubt Half-Life 3 will be a revolution in term of graphics.

Valve should put their efforts to this engine, release the SDK. Source engine was one of the greatest competitors of Unreal engine in the past. This engine was abandoned for too long.
