    I think the question you need to ask is: What terrain do I NOT want to ride on. If you can live without descending over roots, and rocks then get a gravel bike. If you can live without ever leaving the asphalt, or if you want to race road then get a road bike. If you're riding for fun and not doing single track get a gravel bike. I think as long as you're not racing road then there is no reason to choose a road bike over a gravel bike. The mountain bike will handle terrain that is just so much more extreme than the gravel or road bike, but that is at the price of being not fun on asphalt. Also, if you only are buying one bike, do not get a single front chain ring bike - the gearing range is just too limited.

    • @smalerider1727
      @smalerider1727 8 лет назад +5

      Single ring isn't' as limiting as you think it is. Its the jumps that are more pronounced. You gain simplicity and loose overlapping gears, at the cost of big jumps and a little bit of top end range.

    • @bradcomis1066
      @bradcomis1066 7 лет назад +1

      Fran Rod Sure, but it doesn't have drop bars. That's the thing, to do asphalt and mud/roots/jumps there will always have to be some kind of compromise.

    • @bradcomis1066
      @bradcomis1066 7 лет назад +1

      Smale Rider Exactly. So, there is a trade off. Personally I'll take the tiny bit of extra complexity for the giant gain in gear flexibility and the benefit of being able to hit the right cadence.

    Surely gravel bikes give best of both worlds. Put road tires on when you want to go fast and then wider knobbly tires for when you want to tackle more tricky terrain. If you're doing anything on the extremes of this you'll either get a road bike or mountain bike...

    I have 3 bikes. 2 MTB and a road one.
    Road bike I use for training and commuting, but now I start to afraid of roads... Dangerous
    1 MTB is a full suspension trail bike and it requires maintenance. The other MTB is a cheep one hard tail and I use it for commuting and mud conditions. Almost no maintenance, only chain lubricate.
    I think I'll buy a gravel bike instead of road and a hard tail, but 2x11, not 1x11.
    Full suspension one is for singles.

  • @slipinn
    @slipinn 7 лет назад

    The mountain bike with full suspension is very comfortable for the city if you change the seat and bars. Riding sidewalks and crossing driveways , curb transitions, potholes, are a lot easier when you have suspension to take out the jolts and bumps. The chain ring needs a bigger final drive on the front say a 48t. But those few changes in my opinion creates a better riding comfortable bike for the city than a stock mtb or gravel bike or road bike. I'm not sure what you would name such a bike but I think it would offer almost all the benefits of the three in one package. Plus it's very rugged.

    What's the deal with the aero bars on the Gravel Bike? Wouldn't a 2x drivetrain on the gravel bike be better? IMO the Breezer Radar Expert is THE Entry level gravel bike to get. It has a 'BULLETPROOF TANK' CRMO double butted Steel Frame AND fork, #5 WB mounts, F/R rack/fender mounts, tire clearance up to 700c x 2.1" (54mm) and a 2x9 Sora/Deore RD drivetrain (32/48t Crank: 11-36t Cassette) and Hydraulic Disc brakes activated by regular brake cables. It's about 1+ kilo (2-3 lbs) heavier than an aluminum frame with carbon fork though but not a big deal. $900-$1000 for this bike is a GREAT DEAL!!! Steel is Real Baby!!!

    • @catpoison3
      @catpoison3 8 лет назад

      Not nescessary. It's really hard to tell the difference except for tires and gear ratio. For example specialized crux or merida cx have significant slope and have no problems with carrying. BB drop on crux is 69mm, that common for gravel. HA on almost every gravel and cx is between 71-72 for medium sizes, the same for chainstay lenght and wheelbase.

    • @smalerider1727
      @smalerider1727 8 лет назад

      You're comparing nothing to nothing. Comparing two cross bikes with each other from different brands gives absolutely no picture at all. A comparison must be made within each brands cross vs gravel. Finally Crux a is a terrible example, back pre-mainstream gravel biking people used CX bikes. Many people were using and being successful on specifically the Crux. With rider feedback from all these races Specialized adapted gravel bike features on the Crux. A proper gravel bike is like a endurance road bike, a CX bike is more like a road race bike.
      Niner RLT RDO(gravel) 47 vs Niner BSB RDO(cross) 47
      Chainstay 430 vs 425

Get all the racks or panniers for the MTB and only a tiny toolbag for the road bike. If you must have a third, then get a folding bike and carry it in the trunk of your car.

    How about Gravel bike vs Cyclocross? for commuter/fitness/bike i wanna take everywhere and beat it up (lol)
    I had a cannondale carbon synapse 105 about a year ago, doing 90% road/hills, and some gravel, but i like the gravel more. I stopped for a bit and sold the bike.
    Now i'm looking at the Giant TCX SLR 2, Jamis Renegade Expat, & Niner RLT 9 1 Star.
    All have pretty good components for the price, and 1200$ is the max I',m willing to go this time (The synapse cost a lot more and took a while to pay off)
    I'll be doing similarly 80% paved roads/paved bike paths/hills, but I want to take it offroad whenever I want.
    I'm unsure about a cyclocross vs a gravel grinder. I know there's differences, but from what I've heard it's not much.
    The synapse was an endurance geometry and I loved it. It never really hurt my back. But then again, I could also just raise the stem and get spacers if the bike I choose has a more aggressive geo, right?
    any opinions are appreciated. Thanks! 🙂

    Hi,I have recently joined ur channel. I have a question regarding the gearing on gravel bike shown here. Wouldn't it be better to have a triple crank on the so called gravel bike to increase it's versatility(by which I mean do anything bike.. of course not on competition level but for a cycle enthusiasts ), because as it is that the bike can be fitted with 700×35c tyres. There comes a model with those specifications called Lombard from marin ,I wonder why haven't they included the same here,or is it that they want to promote only costly bikes with the new 1x drivetrains and join the wagon......
    However as u said, I am not for the gravel bike.I myself have one entry level hardtail with rim brakes, One mid range endurance road bike with rim brakes and recently added one touring bike ( Four corners from marin)with triple cranks and mechanical discs.....

    • @smalerider1727
      @smalerider1727 8 лет назад

      The gravel bike descends from cyclocross bike and the endurance road bike. None of those bikes (or really anything outside of a touring bike or hybrid bike) run a triple crank. Design wise they are built to race gravel/dirt/poorly maintained roadways. They can also do anything really a road bike can do or a cyclocross bike. They developed a following as good all rounder, because they could do so much, but with that people still wanted more. As of late they have been putting mudguards rack and fender mounts, to market it further as some type of adventuring/light touring bike. But its not actually a touring bike, that's why gravel bikes will never have a triple.
      As for the 1x drivetrain, that is for mechanical simplicity. On gravel race courses there can be the same issues that cyclocross courses have. can be found on gravel races. Mud buildup causing dropped chains, derailleur death, and inability to shift, 1x system solves some of this

    • @sharadpatil9018
      @sharadpatil9018 7 лет назад

      but the question here remains the same for the first byer I mean regarding versatility....

    • @sebastianjost
      @sebastianjost 4 года назад

      @@sharadpatil9018 more chainrings don't necessarily mean more gearing options.
      Due to cross chaining you can't use that many gears anyways.
      But the more important point is:
      A 2x11 drivetrain already has so small jumps between the gears that a 3x isn't worth the extra weight.
      And for some riders it's the same case with 2x over 1x. The gearing range is almost the same with modern larger cassettes and if the larger gaps between gears doesn't bother you, then you can get a lighter bike without much sacrifice.
      And a lighter bike helps you uphill and when riding over obstacles.

      Doesn't mean it's bad though.
      Gravel bikes have a different field of use and they are what many riders want.
      You can very roughly view them as road bikes with more tire clearance to give the riders more options.

      @Kleiner Helfer I have a gravel bike and an xc mountainbike. That way even when I'm doing longer road rides I can venture off-road almost anywhere I want to.

    Buy a gravel bike. Swap to road tyres later for road racing. You're welcome.

      If you're doing a cyclocross race yes, otherwise a gravel bike is superior.

      A gravel bike is a type of road bike. It works just as well if not better than a road bike on the road due to its ability to run larger tires. Gravel bike can also be used for racing, there is explicitly a race format called gravel grinding. You wouldn't know of this because your European and cyclocross format of choice.
