I'm a devoted fan of Turrican II on the Amiga, and I know every nook and cranny of it. It's nice to see that the level designers took some extra time to create additional areas, filling previously unused space.
I remember back at the day when I rented the game, game starts and I am like "Holy shit, this feels SO MUCH like Turrican 2, it's so clear they ripped-off the game badly here". Then I get to level 2 and I am like "Ok, this indeed is Turrican 2"
@@kemikemi756 this *was* going to be a port of Turrican 2, but when they got the Movie License, they just changed the game to fit the license instead of doing a proper new game for Universal Soldier.
@@rafaellima83 This wasn't unheard of back in the day. Nintendo released Super Mario Bros 2 in Japan, but then Nintendo of America thought American kids wouldn't like it because it was too hard (in fairness they were probably correct). So Nintendo took a totally different Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic, reskinned it into a Mario game, and released it in the west as Super Mario Bros 2. That why SMB2 is completely different from any other Mario game. We did eventually get the Japanese SMB2, but for us it was called The Lost Levels and included in Super Mario All-Stars on SNES.
@@Hahnsoulo Yeah, I think everyone knows about Super Mario Bros 2 by now :) It did happen with a lot of games. Puyo Puyo was reskinned in at least 3 different games (Kirby's Avalanche, Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and a Windows Game I can't remember the name but that Microsoft advertised as if it was created by Alexey Pajitnov). Krusty's Super Fun House was just Rat Trap with characters from The Simpsons. The first F1 game by Domark was just Vroom Multiplayer with the F1 License stapled on it. Which was the same thing with Lamborghini American Challenge, just Crazy Cars 3 with a 2 players option and the Lamborghini license. And there were a lot of movie licenses that were games that were already in development where they changed the game to fit the movie tie-in. It was the case with Universal Soldier.... in this case it was more weird because it was a port of game that already existed in another form.
It makes sense since Accolade and Code Monkeys already released ports of Turrican 1 with credit to Factor 5 in the manual and Manfred Trenz in-game (the Genesis' at least) and Turrican 2 ports were in development before they got the movie license. There are unused tracks in this version like the original Title Screen and Ending music, the latter being changed to the High Score music for this.
They also showed this off at WCES '92 before they slapped on the movie license, along with the GB port; sadly no footage or screenshots seem to have made it online, just info in a Nintendo Power magazine.

For anyone wondering, yes, this is a reskinned Turrican II port, and while the game is an unlicensed MD game, this IS an official, legally released port of the game. Here's a little more context. After Accolade, who had the console rights to Turrican, released The Code Monkey's underwhelming Turrican 1 port (which DID keep the original name), they decided to start work on a straight console port of Turrican II. However, in early 1992 following the Winter Consumer Electronic's show, where they showed off the game behind closed doors, they managed to get the license to develop a game based on the Universal Soldier movie. In an attempt to increase sales, they decided to have Code Monkeys slap the movie license on there and make some changes to the game to [attempt to] fit the license, and thus, the Universal Soldier game was born.
Nah it sounds terrible on the Genesis. Mega Turrican has a great ost though, & is inspired by Chris. Mega Turrican's ost sounds more like the Amiga games than this quick cash-in port did.
@@BoozeAholic The music in Uni Sol is just bearable at best, a definite step up from T1 on Genesis, actually 2 or so songs in Uni Sol actually sound great
The soundtrack could've sounded so much better if they dedicated more sound channels to the actual music rather than voice samples and sound effects. The Amiga version of turrican 2 and especially c64 ports have better music but arguably worse soundchips
The turbo grafx "Gunhed" (aka blazing lazers) is even worse. And people complained that Alien 3 by Acclaim/LJN) was even worse despite being more ALIEN 3 than the film!
