    I could not imagine keeping a reef tank and keeping up with classes at the same time. I really admire how some college students really have their lives together. One semester, I had to walk two miles each way to the grocery store to get food, because I made a dumb decision to opt out of a meal plan. That semester was bad. I ultimately ended up with some good grades by the end once I had figured everything out, but I couldn't even find time to eat or shower in my last two semesters!

    George I'm currently planning to set up a saltwater aquarium. I'm a freshman in high school but will set it up my sophomore year. I have done a lot of research in to setting an aquarium up and the rodi was the only thing I didn't know about until now. Tanks you probably might have saved me from using conditioned tap water in my up coming aquarium, u probably saved me from a world of problems

      Usually around every 9-12 months. But if you don't make a lot of water (nano reef) and take care of the RO canister, it could last up to 3 years!

    I did research on when each part needs swapping out. Hope this helps as it wasn't in the video!
    The part that filters the debris out you swap out when water pressure gets too low (when it's clogged). If you want a gadget to tell you when that is, get an in-line psi reader (they're not expensive and you can get them for aquarium RO DI). You will see as the pressure slowly drops over time as it gets clogged.
    The Carbon part you need to do a quick chlorine test after the carbon filter and before the other filters.. you could hypothetically just chuck the flush heads that come with your system onto the RO and resin and then test your water every few months. Make sure chlorine is below 0.5 and make sure the water has been running about 30 mins before you take a sample. If it's over 0.5 that means the resin is doing the carbon's work and getting used up quicker.
    The RO part you can do a TDS test for, just chuck the flush onto the resin section and test after 30 minutes of running. You can buy a tester for a few dollars from Aquatic Life (filter maker). RO doesn't catch all TDS (that's why we have Resin), but just check to see if it's leaking more than it should. This could last a long time and won't be replaced very often.
    The part that has the resin catches the last of the TDS that the rest missed and is your safety net! Don't let it be the filter doing all the work on the group assignment. If you swap the other bits when needed it will last way longer. To tell when it's used up you just watch the colour change and swap it before it reaches the top - easy.
    Source: Bulk Reef Supply Video Tutorials and other research. Please note that I am a newby at this too and just trying to research! So don't just take my word for it and follow up with your own study too :)

    Nice RO/DI filter! I've seen some on eBay for about $90, but considering this one is portable & easy to install & change cartridges w/out tools, I'd say the $112 is worth it! BTW, there is a 4th option other than committing the ultimate sin of tap water & buying or making RO/DI water. That is to use a medium quality filter. For example, the PUR Maxion filter costs about $35 & has a DI but no RO stage. It removes lead or silicates from your water & my refractometer measures the filtered water as 1.000 just like distilled / RODI water --- but you probably want to add a tiny bit of dechlorinator b/c it says "reduces chlorine" on the package - not a guarantee that 100% of the chlorine is gone. Don't get me wrong! I'm sure it is not as good as true RO/DI water! But, but if you only have a FOWLR tank, or maybe only Mushroom Coral, & you're on a really tight budget, it may be good enough. Even with a FOWLR tank, if you have really expensive/delicate fish, you should probably be more cautious, but if you just have a couple of saltwater mollies or a clown fish, it may be ok. Of course, it also depends how bad your tap water is. My tap water is about 1.005 specific gravity out of the tap & I think it just has some silicate minerals & the chlorine they added. The worse the tap water, the harder you have to filter it, of course.

    I have some more questions about that product how easy is it to get the refills for it since they don't look the size of the Standard carbon blocks or sediment filter they look to be almost the same size as the membrane how easy is it to get the replacement cartridges? Seems like a great product 4 purposes of travel and need of it but for at home I like to have my more permanent set up since a lot of my tubes for the actual machine go through the wall and is always being put into a 44 gallon brute trash can and also when you have to change the canisters out what you be another concern for me

    Ya for small tanks it's easier just to buy those 1 gallon RO water from the grocery story for like 80 cents to a dollar. Usually it's also filtered and ozonated too, ozonated is a big plus. Like for my fluval evo 12 which is 13.5 gallons after live rock and filter media and so on it's 10 gallons of water so one of those jugs makes a easy 10% water change every week. So like under 4 dollars a months and easy to transport.

    • @olson5000
      @olson5000 2 года назад

      I figured the answer to this out yesterday! It is different for each part:
      The part that filters the debris out you swap out when water pressure gets too low (when it's clogged)
      The RO part you can do a TDS test for, just chuck the flush onto the resin section and test after 30 minutes running. You can buy a tester for a few dollars from Aquatic Life (filter maker). RO doesn't catch all TDS (that's why we have Resin), but just check to see if it's leaking more than it should. This could last a long time and won't be replaced very often.
      The part that has the resin you watch the colour change and swap it before it reaches the top - easy. It is the backup TDS catcher after the RO, so will last ages if the other parts are doing a good job and not left too long.

    • @olson5000
      @olson5000 2 года назад

      important: how long each part lasts is different for everybody because each town has different things in the tap water

    • @olson5000
      @olson5000 2 года назад

      Each stage is different and how long depends on the water quality going in. Don't waste money by swapping a part before you have to and don't risk your tank by leaving it too long.
      The first "debris" filter is changed most often, just watch the water pressure and you will see when it's getting clogged. It's the cheapest bit to swap.
      The RO section will need swapping when you start seeing TDS in the water (there should be zero). You can get a tester for a few dollars from Aquatic Life (same brand as the filter). It will need swapping out the least often and can be the most expensive bit to swap. It could last you years.
      The Resin section gets the last of the TDS and MUST be swapped out before the resin expires or it will start sending things into your tank and TDS will not read zero anymore. Easy way to avoid this is just watch as the colour changes and swap out that section before the colour reaches the top. It won't need swapping very often.

    Ok this is old but we have a water purifier running on the whole house. Would that be fine or would I need to buy a rodi?

    • @Christian-sr6pd
      @Christian-sr6pd 4 года назад

      99% chance you still need RODI unit. Unfortunately most home purification systems don’t give 0 TDS

    How fast does it filter the water? Would I be able to take an. hour or so in the basement and bring everything back up? I don't trust the people in my hall enough to leave the equipment and water down there

    • @coralfish12g
      @coralfish12g  6 лет назад

      musiclives43v3r Yes, it's pretty fast. I think it's less likely to be messed with or stolen than your laundry which most kids leave down there. You can do it late at night too.

    Wow, I was just thinking about getting one of these units. I only have a 29 gal Biocube so I thought it would be perfect. If the di canister is white, how do you see if the stuff inside has changed color? And how many gallons does it waste per filtered gallon?

    • @andrewcameron9834
      @andrewcameron9834 7 лет назад +1

      aquatic life sells a clear canister for the resin on its other units. I run one so far so good.

    • @foggycloud2583
      @foggycloud2583 7 лет назад +1

      The resin cartridge is semi transparent, You can still observe the color change through it.

    • @coralfish12g
      @coralfish12g  7 лет назад

      You really should! I wish I got mine sooner! The DI resin actually visibly changes color so you know when to replace it! They do this on purpose as a feature, it's actually really obvious when it changes.

    If you don't have a threaded nozzle to hook it up to I imagine you can just unhook your washer and use it there.

    You went from Reef Crystals to Red Sea Coral Pro, to Fritz. Any particular reason why? I only ask because I am planing on going to red sea coral pro.

    • @coralfish12g
      @coralfish12g  7 лет назад +1

      I started getting the cheapest and bare minimum Reef Crystals as a kid, it was fine, but doesn't add much for corals, so I moved to Red Sea's Salt which dissolves clear, but not all of it there is always some at the bottom of the container. Now I am trying out Fritz, because it is the hot salt out on the market right now, and I have heard amazing things about it. So far so good. You can buy all these salts on my website too!

      CoralFish12g I asked because I am also thinking about switching. I will probably buy Fritz and Aquaforest Reef salts and make another of my comparison videos. Thanks for the reply.

    Fun fact: The water that Adam Sandler was all about in The Waterboy was NOT RODI water, it was, in fact, glacier water.
    They understood that good water is not PURE water.
