    was this technique applied correctly?
    a legitimate shime-waza
    a neck crank
    a combination of both.
Actually the IJF have banned this technique, (July 2022, according to a IJF referee) but things can take time to filter down to a local level on the other side of the globe, at small tournament NZ.

Peruvian necktie - it's a choke when done well, cranking the neck definitely tightens it up though! I'd say bit of both!

To add - Supposedly now illegal however no official statement from the IJF since it was Supposedly banned months. IJF need to get their act together. Dumbing down the martial art one thing at a time

Thanks for comment. Damn Peruvians, bringing their neckties over here.

I think when doing these moves in a very controlled environment, it's pretty easy to say "well this is a choke," and "this is a neck crank," but when someone is actively resisting, the lines can be blurred as techniques aren't always as pretty or clean cut as they are when demonstrated on a passive training partner. I certainly don't think there was anything deliberately underhand on display, here.

I totally agree. The question was different. The question was what in our opinion, in the light of experiences, caused the submission. It appears to me that there is significant pressure from the legs, causing a 90 degree bend in the neck to spine angle. That triggers questions to me that this aspect wasn't discussed by refs. To me that makes it more a crank than a strangle. I think HSK should be considered, when a 90 degree bend is made, and that blue should be careful to emphasise their hand action in guillotine, rather than legs clamping.

Anaconda transitioned to a Peruvian Necktie, solid technique, definitely not a crank. I had heard they'd recently banned this like everything else in Judo, "Kata-sankaku grip situation in ne-waza: it is prohibited to block the opponent’s body with the legs and mate must be announced" - not sure how old the match is but i thought it was illegal now.
