Hi, I'm doing a comparison of the sounds of Received Pronunciation of Britain and General American accent.. I'm confused about /i:/ of R.P and /i/ of GenAm, and /u:/ of R.P and /u/ of GenAm.. For example, the word "too" is phonetically written as /tu:/ in R.P and as /tu/ in GenAm.. Similary "see" is /si:/ and /si/ respectively.. Are there any differences in the pronunciation of these sounds in R.P and GenAm, or are they different phonetic symbols for the exact same sounds?
The /i:/ and /u:/ are sometimes considered to be longer than /i/ and /u/. However, some dictionaries use these symbols to represent the same sounds. I do not usually hear the difference. They usually sound the same to me. I'm sorry about my late response.
