- Muse are forced to playback on an Italian TV show, so they troll everyone by switching instruments.
I did my best to understand what Dom says towards the end and when writing it down, I hope that's helpful.

You can hear the interpeter hesitating when translating into italian "Il nostro batterista.... Matt" ("Our drummer here.... Matt"). That's because an interpreter usually has some prior knowledge of what he/she knows they will have to translate. So, he must have googled Muse and taken note of the members of the band and their role. So, hearing Dom saying our drummer Matt must have been weird for him

Tbf the fact that they've swapped instruments isn't important, that's just their way of drawing attention to the fact that they are playing over a tape. The joke isn't that no-one knows what Muse look like, it's that it doesn't matter who plays who's instruments since none of them are plugged into amps in the first place.

Yeah you’re right but as an italian i felt ashamed that the host of the show proved that she had no interest at all in knowing a littlet the band. Usually if an internation band comes to a show the host should be prepared (or at least should look at a photo of them just to know who’s the singer!!!) but this host proved that she was just given a script to read and she didn’t care at all. Moreover she even tried to sound informed abour their music, and this is even worst.

Kjkoolio most musicians in a band can play some basic guitar, is a very common instrument to learn firat or if you want to write music.... Guitarists don't usually learn propernbass playing or drum.but they're obviously better guitarists that their bandmates

2024 here. bit late to the party but glad I got to witness this little bit of history😂
Never watched this video despite it being recommended for years, because I'm not big on these types of live performances and "playback" isn't a term we use in the US, so I didn't realize what what happening. Just saw Dom at a mic with shades. It's hilarious though. You gotta know this secretly was Dom's best day ever. Being the front man, and lead vocals. Matt going 110% on showmanship was hysterical too. Also, the irony of the chorus lyrics, is great. They definitely didn't betray the song by being forced to do something.
