Ffion is so sweet and lovely off the mats, then such an absolute monster when it really matters. Such a great inspiration and role model for the sport.
She did a seminar at my gym. She was hilarious and super fun. But she was demonstrating how to use the guillotine to pass a seated guard and it felt like she could have easily ripped my head off.
Ffion has to be considered one of the female GOAT in BJJ. ADCC gold ADCC silver, multiple time IBJJF champ in Gi and NoGI. She’s a beast. Happy for her.

The ref even physically made note of the top arm being trapped before the reset and then restarted them with the arm free. Deliberate or just incompetence?
Yeah. i noticed that. also she didn't get takedown points. maybe its a subtly in the rules but she hit the foot sweep and went straight to the back. seems like 2 points.

It worked out because Ffion finished, but I’d be furious if i was her coach and Gabi escaped. So much harder to defend RNC with arm trapped

Not to be a geek but why no 2 points for the takedown?
I understand being scared of guillotine but why does no one shoot in higher level? i feel like they stand straight up and planted half the time especially after the back and forth exchange i would think they wouldn't see it coming and the sprawl could get dumped but maybe i'm just a stupid blue belt haha
Probably from lack of wrestling experience and more comfortable with judo movements. There are so many great takedowns without having to shoot. She tried some. Arm drag, 2on1 to the takedown, knee/ankle pick, which is amazing for all situations.

Yea, hate how they score takedowns in modern jiujitsu comps.
It’s like, how did she get to the back to get those points? By initiating the takedown. So they are on the ground from the feet - because she took her down.
But it only counts as a “takedown” if their butt is on the ground for so many seconds.
It’s not a good way to score takedowns.

Those penalties are dumb. If a competitor is going to spend so much time backing up and disengaging, even when the opponent gives up the top position, only for the competitor to continue to not engage. So dumb. If you’re standing over a seated opponent you have no excuse to back up. You should get penalised for stepping away from a seated opponent. If you get reset in the middle and your first reaction is to step backwards and away from your opponent before you’ve even clinched you should get penalised again. There is no logical reason for why you would be stepping back if you haven’t clinched. It’s not like you can use a backwards step like you can in striking to throw a counter.
