    Great video -
    1. High lift definitely not necessary. Just make sure you have some way of changing a tire. Could be your stock jack and a couple blocks of wood.
    2. As long as you have a good AT/Hybrid “rugged” terrain style tires then you really don’t need to air down for traction unless you’re doing some serious wheeling. I air down a lot just for comfort. It makes the ride so much more comfortable, even on relatively well maintained dirt or gravel roads.
    3. I never use my winch either, but I travel solo 90% of the time, so it’s worth the piece of mind. Same thing with skids and sliders. I mainly stick to forest roads, but I’m solo and my rig is my daily driver. Last thing I want to do is break something or get stranded alone. If you are always with a crew and aren’t wheeling hard then a winch is definitely optional.

I stopped carrying a hilift a while ago. I use a good bottle jack now. I have a winch on all my vehicles and have needed them a couple of times to get out of a backwoods area so I did not have to spend a extra night. I have found several uses for a winch outside of sheeling so it makes sense to me to have one. I used to carry a big Viair compressor but have now switched out to the new milwaulkee cordless 18 volt tire inflator. It is almost as fast as the Viair and since I carry a electric Milwaulkee chain saw with me I already have the batteries

I also meant to say that the traction boards are the next thing for me to stop carrying as I have never used them.

Ahh see thats what I love to learn from people when they comment! Ive actually used my traction boards quite a bit. Ill definitely look into that Milwaukie air compressor👍 thanks!

i have the little M12 tire inflator, wish i had ponied up for the 18, but didnt have the money at the time (amidst moving cross country, not having enough quarters to keep filling all my tires on the truck + RV at gas stations, and catching a flat made me buy it mid-trip; i also have a glut of m12 batteries). it works good enough, but again, the 18 is enough better I'll get that next time instead.

Yup, yup, and yup! Although, I kept the air compressor for when a tire goes flat and I need to repair it.

Thats exactly why I still carry mine despite never using it. I might not ever air down, but the moment i take it out of the truck ill pop a tire (and then probably my spare too) lol

As always a very well put together video. So regarding your list: A Hi lift jack is something I actually never considered 🤷🏻‍♂️ Your welcome for my air compressors service. Oh and I’m gonna make you use that winch now 🤙🏻

In 25 yrs of off-roading I have only used a hi-lift Jack once. I lifted the back of my jeep and shoved it over in Little Sluice on the Rubicon.

Started leaving the recovery rope and spare tire in the garage,,, haven't used them for a while.

If I didn't know better, I would think that you are one of my neighbors. Every item you mentioned I have owned at one time and have never used. I sold my hi-lift and the guy that bought it said his buddies had told him that he needed one for his jeep. I have the winch and have not used it yet. I don't regret buying it as I mainly travel solo, and I think it's good insurance. It's taken me a few years to realize that I certainly don't need all this "stuff" and have slowed down on my purchases. However, when you see me with my new snorkel, please realize that it is not a functional purchase instead just a "looks cool" one.

Would love to put on a winch bumper but can’t find one that I can justify spending. I actually have been in a few situations where, had I been alone, a winch would’ve saved me. I’ve never been in a situation where I needed a hi lift, though I’ve seen these airbags that you put under your the truck and air it up and it lifts the vehicle.
I really dig the morrflate system but went with a diy route that has worked great, drastically cut down my air down/up times. Depends on the roads, I can only think of a few spots here in New England where I will air down for comfort, but I also don’t have the multi dssv suspension like yours does. Good video!

Thanks for watching! And i agree, thats kinda how i feel about the trails ive used in New England (so far). Ive seen the air bag device on a few channels. Ill have to investigate further.

Not airing down and not winching says more about your trail environments than anything else.
I'm with a crew that likes a bit of challenge (nothing risk rolling over) Not just for the sake of a challenge, but it takes you places you would otherwise NEVER get to. That's why we're out there.
If someone does want any kind of challenge, you should seriously consider a winch or at least a friend & recovery rope.
Also keep in kind being out there is a riskier environment than staying at home on the couch. This increases anxiety and concern. Having the tools with you gives you assurance you can overcome problems and remain comfortable and sometimes stay alove (depending on your scenario). I have vehicle upgrades that may be overkill for what I want to do but now i have confidence with my wife we can handle whatever we find. Being anxious and afraid takes the fun away.
If you call yourself an overlander, be prepared in getting yourself out of tricky situations. That's responsible. You're not on pavement. Few to no people to help. Tow trucks won't come get you. So yes winch isn't a must but it's more a responsibility. I also have a first aid kit I've never used. Bring a buddy and rope if no winch. Or stay cautious.

Very well said. You said everything I was thinking. It's been years since I was interested in rock crawling, but my ZR2 has full AEV skid plates and a winch. I air down now for ride comfort (and it's easier on the truck), not for traction. Don't do the really hard stuff anymore.

I totally agree with what you said. Like I said at the end of the video, i dont regret purchasing my winch. Im still happy I have it and I agree with the responsibility aspect.

the high lift is so basic that it could of easily been fixed and given to some one that would of appreciated it even if it wasn't fixt before being given to someone . so that does give a real insight in to your mechanical abilities which i would say is none to minimum. I do think to many people air down when it is not needed but they watch videos and think it is necessary. it will give you a smoother ride on a rough trail but is very hard on the tire side walls and will shorten the life of a tire and can cause belts to slip. I have been4x4 ing over 40 yrs never needed a jack a wench or aired down.

    • @varsityoverland
      @varsityoverland  8 месяцев назад

I certainly dont claim to possess any particularly notable mechanical abilities lol and im sure you're absolutely right. I could've given the jack away and probably should have now that I look back on it. A mistake ill do my best not to repeat 👍

Luckily, i have never recovered with my winch. But it comes in very handy for pulling posts, shrubs and other vehicles.
