We just started our channel and this is really so true. I wonder when South Africa will catch up and support "local". Thanks for the informative video😀
You’re so welcome, really glad you enjoyed and good luck with your channel, I’m sure it will be a success. Sadly I think those that started 3 years ago have tried really hard to get “nowhere”. I’ve seen channels pop up this year that have over 15k subscribers already.
Very informative. I avoided this video for some time because I'm on the point of starting a channel aimed at the SA consumer market and did not want to risk any negativity dampening my vision. But tonight I thought, let me watch this and take it on as a challenge to overcome. I also searched for channels like what I'm working on and could only find random overseas vids, not a single channel doing it as a standard. I'm positive that SA youtubers will be heard if we stay strong and continue without giving up. I believe we should take hands and promote each other as South African content creators/influencers and as a group make some waves in the RUclips community. Strongs to all out there in SA!!
Guys this make so much sense..we moved in Cape Town about 3 years ago as artists..not that we had thousand of views before, however since we got here..our youtube channel basically dropped to 0 impact...thank you for this video, it made us aware on how things are here and giving us an input to find a different approach
You are absolutely SPOT ON with these three things in our local market! 3 years later and the market is still the same. Lots of old school business brains sticking to old school tactics, but hopefully the RUclips boom will still come to South Africa 🤞
Hi Rich stumbled across 1 of your videos and when i saw its from our country i immediately subscribed and checked out your vids, you the 1st local YT channel i follow.Congrats on your growth good luck to everyone else and let's keep pushing in our space.
Hey thanks so much. That’s so nice to hear. I really appreciate the kind words and welcome to the channel. I promise there’ll be amazing new work coming too.
Thank you! Started 2 channels , private and business... it has been quite the experience with a lot of work that goes into but honestly loving every minute of it.
You're absolutely right, I started my channel in September. Actually, I started the channel in April 2020, I caught the virus so I focused on recovering. When I healed, I resumed my channel in September and my RUclips Growth has been at a snail pace. But I'm optimistic.
We spoke about this the other day! The viewers on our channel are mostly from overseas 😬 And thinking about it, we don’t know many people who actually watch a lot of RUclips. We joined a support group of other couple travel vloggers, we all started around the same time (we are the only South Africans in this group), and they have all overtaken us by far in number of subscribers 😬 We knew it was going to be a tough journey though, but still 🙈
So true! I’ve seen a few of these groups and people over seas spike. But if they visit a holiday destination and make a blog that holiday resort shares it. And so the snow ball picks up speed. In South Africa it doesn’t happen. It’s a fight for selfishness. Sad reality. I’ve seen sneaker RUclipsrs start overseas that produce the usual content that have blown up! And that’s because the community and people overseas support each other and have transitioned to RUclips rather than living off other toxic platforms.
RICH Photography Totally agree! Hopefully SA gets there soon 😔 (once the TikTok craze blows over 😅) I just can’t believe that brands don’t want to work with you, your videos are amazing and excellent quality! Such a shame!
I am a BookTuber and you are right. Sponsorships are basically non-existent. And we were told that there is no budget to pay book reviewers. This year I am starting to see a few changes in this space that suggest that hopefully soon we will have sponsorships rolling in.
Well said and totally true. If we as a marketing company can get all our clients to start working together it will start a trend to help all South African companies in the long run.
Glad we on the same page...2023 and still, we get FAR more support from global countries than here in South Africa. Companies abroad will happily give an expensive product for a detailed review, good quality content that they can be proud of. Locally, please...just last week I was told, 'we will see if we can maybe borrow you the product' LOL
Great video Rich! I came across your video by chance. I've been contemplating on whether or not to start a RUclips channel for the local market. I'm a visual identity designer and illustrator in the branding space with plenty knowledge to share on this platform. Love your work and definitely believe we need more local creators such as yourself on this platform with valuable and insightful content. You have a new subscriber!
We agree it is tricky to grown on RUclips - but as you say just focus on creating beautiful inspiring work - the views will come - it took as 3 years to make a film almost every week and now finally we reached 100 000 subscribers .. Just create meaningful work that does not date. We a couple of South Africans that live off guidon a tiny Nature Reserve outside Hermanus - anything is possible ..
Thank you for this insightful video. I also noticed US and OZ YT growth is way faster in comparison. I started a 4WD Off-road and Overlanding channel recently and growth is slow indeed. You're 100% correct WRT the quality of our work. I think if we up the levels to be on par with international standards things will shift in our favor both with local and international support. That's the key - CREATE GOOD QUALITY CONTENT REGULARLY! All the best to my fellow SA content creators out there !!!!
Man ! I am shocked about the behavior of those brands ! i am from north africa (Morocco) keep it up brother ! and stick hard to your great work because the day they will realize you would be already well established !
Sad to see it's even in the fitness industry, usually the fitness industry is the one industry that's different in a lot of aspects. Clearly not on RUclips 😔
I think the biggest problem is that these big companies don't: 1. Know who the South African RUclipsrs/ Content creators/ Social media influeners are. 2. Really want to research who has a very good RUclips audience or willing to help an up and coming RUclipsr and grow together with them. My channel has only grown because of a specific niche within the automotive spectrum. I'm quite happy and fortunate that my channel is gaining traction, but it is still painfully slow when compared to channels from overseas. One day the light will shine on our SA RUclipsrs. Keep up the great content
Yeah it's hard for local creators but most of my views are from North America and Europe so I think I can grow my channel with support those countries.
Thank you for this video. It's not easy to get brand collaboration in SA, but don't give up. I'm sure this video will help people realise the need for creators and artists to collab with brands so that they can get more REAL likability, and stop buying likes and comments like some do as a shortcut. Looking famous with no real support is just stupid. I'm still building my following for years, but it takes time if you want real people who actually want to support your projects
You’re so welcome. You have NO idea how many people buy likes and views on RUclips too. So many South African music artists are doing this, brands running RUclips channels for other companies….all paying for views and likes and then boom it ends. It’s NORMAL to have 20 000 subscribers and get 5000 views, then 200, then 20 000
Hi.This is soo true! Its so hard to grow on yt for us.I really think the only way to be an average channel is by uploading non stop for at least 5 years and then youll only start to really grow.ITS A LONGGG RACE THIS!Thx for the vid.Really good advice.Enjoy your day.
I feel you! Thanks for this video. I have the exact same experience with companies. I have even had people download videos and sharing them without my details.

Thank you So Much For all the time and effort you Put into your videos and the Information you Provide. From One Creator to Another keep up the Good work.
Preach !! So many Good points here. I'm trying to grow a money marketing and real estate channel here. Not easy ! I do believe the era is going to land hard here for RUclips. Keep up the good work brother. I look up to your content quality leading the South African wave.
Really appreciate the kind words man 🙏 It’s definitely tough and these points seem to always apply to local companies and brands sadly. I have met some awesome brands willing to work in SA which I appreciate. I wish you all the best with your channel, you got this man!!! 👊
@@RICH_Photography Any advice for a South African entrepreneur looking at leveraging RUclips. I've noticed in my real estate/marketing niche here , the spam is unbelievable.
Whatever dreams you have is all in your energy to accomplish it, it doesn't matter how long it takes, as long as your thirst is over at the end... God bless whoever is reading
Get a few topics planned, get an easy setup that you can sit down and film...and get good audio, nothing worse than bad audio in a podcast and the people going too far off topic.
I have been saying this for so long now. I have been trying to get on board with brands for months now but none of them will look twice yet I am the only one doing what I do in SA (Well that I know of). Social media stats show Facebook & Instagram are South Africa's biggest social sites with Tik Tok a close third. Brands are so quick to push their product behind non relevant content creators instead of the creators who use it daily and are passionate about the brand
Too true!!! Keep creating and never give up, when the brands realise where the movement is, it will be too late for the Instagramers and TikTokkers to grow on youtube.
In your RUclips channel settings, your location settings. If you change those settings to USA, as opposed to south africa. Does that/will that make any difference? Have you tried that? Surelly that would change your default audience it shows to.
Hey Rich. I hope you answer this. Does a VPN help with this. I see some Australian creators base their channels in the USA using VPNs so as to attract international (mostly American) brand support as well direct the algorithm toward American eyeballs. All this while still creating content that would be relevant for their domestic market. Could this work for SA? Mind of course the content has to be great quality nonetheless.
Of course I will answer ;) I don't know if it would help entirely...the reason being, a lot of brands collaborate with products and payments, as soon as they see you live in South Africa, they will automatically reconsider their affiliation and maybe go local. In saying that, a lot of my support comes from overseas brands wanting to make an impact in South Africa, not only that, but brands overseas understand that great content produced in South Africa is also seen all over the world. Ive always had the motto of, just go for it! If people want to subscribe and follow you they will, no amount of 'hacking' and 'loop holes' will get you constant views on RUclips. Chin up and create!
Also for a starting an very small YT channel like myself i really want to do tech reviews aswell as game rieviews but te COST of everything in SA is expensive as hell.
I am one of those afrikaans guys that really want to get into content creating more on the gaming side..but no skills and no real equipment and wanting to go into a highly saturated enviroment kind of makes me fear it..you videos are very inspiring btw highly appreciate it and so happy I came accross it..
It’s insanely saturated, my advice is go for it. Even if it takes 2 or 3 years. Better late than never. 2020/2021 youtube will grow in South Africa. So hope on it soon, create, your audience will come. And massive thanks for the support!
Thank you for the motivation will def do it as soon as possible..will keep supporting your channel because it feel so much more at home..keep up the great work
Kindly tell me pls, lets say for example i have posted 5 videos on youtube but not monetized yet..Does youtube count the views of all your videos together to monetize you or just views of each video?
Please can you confirm if this is true.....youtube first shows your videos to audiences in the same region as you. If you posted from gauteng it will only show to gauteng viewers, then if it does well move to other regions, once tested on all regions in south africa then will move onto other regions. I know this is how tiktok works. But im guessing this is how youtube also works. Please advise
Just out of interest, what makes you believe that SA will still have a YT era where YT becomes preferred or an alternative over social media in SA just like how it is in the US.
I just started 3 months ago I got 95 subs rn doing reaction videos from mainstream artists in the world. Getting views atleast. Not many but I'm satisfied. Won't give up😂
RUclips, like Faceplant and Instagram, is really set-up by and for Americans. I don't do RUclips, but my Facebook page and website has also proved difficult to grow.
Facebook pages are extremely difficult to grow. Facebook pushes paid promotions over normal posts so your reach is terrible. We have a full tutorial (it will be sold though for a price) on how to rank your website the proper way to the first page of Google. None of the short cuts, just the blunt truth and process.
I don’t entirely agree with all the statements made by Rich. There are many examples of SA creators with a huge following, and subsequently make a good living from RUclips. The particular market Rich is trying to penetrate is already saturated and even more so with SA. Combined with the “uniqueness” of the South African perspective and you get what we have here - great content but with limited appeal to anyone outside of it.
I definitely do not agree that my channel content/market is saturated in South Africa. If it's saturated please tag 10 South Africans RUclipsrs in the same market. 10 should be easy for you...I personally know of 1.
Absolutely agree... South Africans are terrible... more jealousy than anything else in my niche.. I have a 2nd channel thats staying far away from local viewers
I don't wanna be clever, we should strip the culture ego the people siting 3 tables from me outside SA ask, "you from South Africa" not really accents the culture ego.
@@RICH_Photography I own a cake decorating school & shop. Have researched and don't see anybody else from SA in my field. Bought all my gear, ready to GO!!!!! Have built an existing SA "fan base" on Facebook over the years. SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!! Going to link up with Udemy. Any other suggestions? Lola
I think RUclips, especially lately, has been very difficult for everyone. Here in the U.S, growth is just as difficult because of extreme and unnecessary censorship. Demonetization is at an all time high because they would rather you kept the platform afloat by working for free and not being paid for it while their favorite RUclipsrs continue to be elevated. The truth is, there would be no RUclips without the smaller RUclipsrs who hardly get paid anything at all. What people don't realize is that subscribers are great on this platform but views are worth more hence the influx of many untalented people who act like fools for views and clicks. You really have to stand out and give people a reason to want to click on your videos. YT is a place that's slowly becoming Disney-like because they are in the process of rebranding and now regular RUclipsrs have to fight for recognition in the same space that out of work celebrities are also trying to infiltrate. The reason it will continue to be difficult for the regular RUclipsr is because most celebrities are out of work and they are now posting their content here for money. Plus, a lot of TV networks are doing the same so competition is really high.
The biggest problem with SA RUclipsrs, no brand will knock on their door with smash or pass content. They looking to make money quick, they not in it for the long term.
We just started our channel and this is really so true. I wonder when South Africa will catch up and support "local". Thanks for the informative video😀

What are the solutions to these issues??
Kindly tell me pls, lets say for example i have posted 5 videos on youtube but not monetized yet..Does youtube count the views of all your videos together to monetize you or just views of each video?
Things are bad people. My mum just unsubscribed my channel
😂 2020 man! It’s rough
I am sorry but this is funny
Oh my 🤣😢
Just subscribed to replace the subscriber
you lost😂😂♥️
@@valenciamhlanga39 Well that was mighty kind of you 😊
Your definitely one of the best in SA when it comes to cinematic 👌
Thank you!! Really appreciate that so much :) I can say its one thing we strived for, keeping people visually entertained :)
@@RICH_Photography It’s definitely worth watching and great for the SA RUclips community, most of our local quality is not great, like you’ve said.
Um wich editng app do you use?
All our videos are edited on Final Cut Pro X.
And I've try to come RUclipsr and people say it's better for me to move overseas to become successful on social media
This is 100% not true.
@RICH_Photography okay so our videos will be shown to anyone in any country who have a history of watçhing the kind of content we produce?
Exactly that 😉
I guess we have to grind harder.... Never quit... And do what we enjoy doing... CREATING.
he spittin rn
I am in South Africa and I'm a youtuber
I have tiktok Instagram and Facebook I rather be a RUclipsr
DID YOU MENTION ALGRYTHM LIMITATION??
Just out of interest, what makes you believe that SA will still have a YT era where YT becomes preferred or an alternative over social media in SA just like how it is in the US.
I'm a south African RUclipsr gamer
I just started 3 months ago I got 95 subs rn doing reaction videos from mainstream artists in the world. Getting views atleast. Not many but I'm satisfied. Won't give up😂
RUclips, like Faceplant and Instagram, is really set-up by and for Americans. I don't do RUclips, but my Facebook page and website has also proved difficult to grow.
FWIW, I do follow a few SA Facebook pages and enjoy the content.
Do you think COVID is going to slowly open a door for more RUclips success in SA?
Ooh definitely!!!!
So many people have started especially due to trying to earn money from the platform!
Lola
I also want to be a RUclipsr 😭💕 that is my dream
Racism also problem. Creators are so prejudiced it contribute to low quality
Plus, a lot of TV networks are doing the same so competition is really high.
here you will see "smash or pass" this content is not fun
The biggest problem with SA RUclipsrs, no brand will knock on their door with smash or pass content.
They looking to make money quick, they not in it for the long term.
@@RICH_Photography we have to do better to grow as big as other countries
