I think if earth was in a battle with an alien race, and the only way to survive was to win a guitar battle. Guthrie would save us.
There actually exists an anime about a washed up guitarist who gets recruited by aliens for their intergalactic war.
"Legend of Black Heaven"
Is it a good anime? Sounds like i might be interested, but theres so many shows i think would be good, and then i dont like. Did you like it?
Michael not agree. Remember buckethead is on their side. Would be a sick battle for sure.
fun fact bucket head has 264 albums
aidanscovers past one month since your coment, probably he has 347 now.
According to Guthrie's interview with the Captain Lee, Guthrie wrote this when he was 19. Holy shit.
I'm guessing he's just referring to the main melody, because there's no way anyone could envision the scope of this piece without having a band of other skilled musicians, which is hard to find when you're only 19. I'm 19 and where I live trying finding people to play with that are my age and as good as me is like trying to win the lottery. The chances aren't as slim, but it's still pretty bad. I'm not even joking, I'm so jealous of people that live in the center of big cities. If I had other people as good as me and as passionate I am about writing music, first of all I would be happy and my general well-being would be better, and I'd already be playing gigs.
have you ever considered going to music school? You'll meet lots of skilled, passionate musicians there!
Also, there definitely is a possibility, and it's even easier now, because there are TONS of programs that you can use to create music and write music. Even if you don't have this, if you are good at music theory (which, if you look at some of his videos, he definitely is) you could write any sorts of pieces. Back when i studied music theory i could write anything from a choir piece, to jazz.
Not saying that he didn't collab, but it's not impossible to write complex music by yourself if you're invested. There's always a way
I don't know how old he was back then, but I can tell you he already had it recorded in 93 cause it was released in guitar magazine that year
+TheSamuraiApocalypse i mean its possible, jason becker made crazy stuff before he was even 18
Alex bob Jason Becker invented this style of neoclassical fusion jazz blues. of course Yngwie shaped Neoclassical but Jason Becker set a bar.
Blue by Jason was written when he was 16 or something.
03:07-03:31
That is probably the most beautiful 24 seconds ever played on electric guitar. I feel healed from any mental or physical problem every time I hear it.
prefer the riff that begins at 3:31
The whole thing is magical. First time I’m hearing it. Music is amazing.
For me, its the clean riff starting just after the 1:50 mark. That chicken pickin' with the spacey reverb is awesome.

The most complete guitarist in the world
thats buckethead mate 😉
a guitarist without a face is not complete
BJ12578 Buckethead isnt as good with phrasing, bends, unique progressions and in my opinion composing as Guthrie. While buckethead is extremely talented in many different styles i don't believe he is nearly as good as GG.
buckethead it's not very complete, i love him but he always run and make riffs using only the natural minor scale on the classic three chords of rock music for example( b minor, a major, g major) I mean he 's very skilled (tapping slap ecc.. ) But ironically he is very commercial for what he does and he is often locked in his patterns and that it's not good because he repeat him self al lot of time, he has not freedom. Instead Guthrie have a great music theory and he is really open mind, he can do on the guitar exatly what he want without repeat himself in fact he mix jazz rock blues funk classic music ecc.. Maybe I prefer Buckethead because he makes beautiful and soulfull riffs and composition but Guthrie Govan is on a complete other level.
Never
As someone who finds shredding to be soulless and flashy, Guthrie Govan is an anomaly to me. He is able to play quick without sounding like a "shredder" and still play tastefully and within the song. He plays to make the tune.
+MrDT543 That's because many other shredders play fast just for the sake of playing fast. Some barely care for expressing any musical ideas. Guthrie on the other hand, has many musical ideas, some which need to be played fast t. He plays for the sake of music, not for playing flashy stuff which have no true depth.
Depends on your definition of shredding.
+MrDT543 Indeed, he is very good at mixing both into something very good! Now, I don't know if you are into metal or not, but I'd suggest looking at "Dave Davidson" from "Revocation". In my opinion, he does this very well too, and is therefore also my favorite guitarist. "Per Nilsson" from "Scar Symmetry" is also up there. His playing is a bit more "technical'ish" though, using very "out of this world" scales. :)
I feel Steve Vai is capable of doing it better
Jamie MacMillan couldn't disagree more, but that's what makes music beautiful! It's all objective.
At 19, I was living an aimless existence. At 19, Guthrie Govan was writing epic guitar pieces.
If it's any consolation, he doesn't really like this piece and never plays it any more.

guthrie is such a legend, he did a guitar clinic at my music college years ago and rocked up an hour late straight from the pub carrying a 6pack of beers with him and spent most of the clinic talking to random people for over an hour about random stuff telling funny stories then realised he spent to much time talking and just shredded for close to an hour straight with the band. best.clinic.ever! he was almost rocking a band new cornford amp serial number 001 witch he left for us to play with for a few weeks
Fuck yea
I hope that's a joke, otherwise I would seriously lose respect for this dude.
That's so cool , I'll bet he shredded .That's a trip guithrie goven played collage. That’s just very accurate
Does anyone disagree this is the greatest guitarist to have ever graced the earth!?!!
3:07 is so damn f***ing smooth o.o
It is really dissapointing to read comments which have mostly aim to compare one guitarist with another. Except from thinking about who is better, sit, listen, take what you can from this excelent piece of music. Don't bother who is better or who is using similiar technique or sound similiar to someobody else, it is useless.
***** But that is a void statement to a degree because one can't define "better musicians". It's all subjective. It is less so in football.
I think we're all guilty of doing it at some point.
He wrote this song when he was 17.
***** You can compare musicians, but you can't define one as better. Comparison between two pieces of music is subjective. Defining a difference is objective.
***** You're completely missing the point. Comparing any two musicians with regards to the quality of their music is subjective. There's no "defining" here, because defining deals with facts. Just because Guthrie would likely make better music than a 3 year old doesn't mean he is an inherently better musician. And I've never been a fan of comparing people who're still in their formative years to others, because it's not taking into account their whole picture. It's like comparing a ten year old footballer to Messi, it would be non-sensical and pointless.
Rip to my best friend Chris Millsap this was the last song him and drank to rest in peace bro you really were the best
Joe Bonamassa, Derek Trucks, John Mayer, these musicians guide my fingers as i put them on my guitar. Guthrie Govan guides my mind when I put on the headphones. Why not the fingers? Sometimes you just prefer to listen. Not to ruin the magic for yourself when playing it.
Or because it's impossible to play like Guthrie lol

is this going to qualify as a humble brag?
@@mackhomie6 Not really. The opening section isn't super hard to play - I can kind of play most of it too.
@@bakarenibsheut12 I guess it depends on the skill level of the commenters. I ditched my PRS for a custom flamenco blanca probably around the time this was released. What about that? Humblebrag by loose association?
Edit: that's also not true. But I did switch to a classical guitar. The custom sits in a case, wasting away because the temperature changes are too big in this building. I lost my now hard to get Yamaha flamenco guitar to a pawn shop and by pure luck found it listed for sale online and got a deal on it. You didn't ask about any of this
@@mackhomie6 You're right, I didn't ask XD And yeah, I think that definitely qualifies as a humblebrag. Honestly, though, Guthrie's music is bound to attract commenters who are guitar nerds themselves, and are more likely to be, or aspire to be, more proficient players.

That's a problem where society wants useful stuff and not get overwhelmed by euphoria
This is the song that made me an instant fan. I've been blessed to see him twice live since.
Such a brilliant and inspiring song. Especially that opening riff! Message to myself: if you are watching this comment by coincidence years later, remember your love for guitar and the great inspiration this song has caused you. If you are still in a rut after all this time, never give up!

@@PriestOfTheUnholy. One of the things I love about playing an instrument is that there really is no limit to what you can learn. Sounds like you just need to set some new objectives! People are just too biased to admit that this guy is the best guitarist in history. Fucking masterpiece. Fucking genius.
Listen to plini. I don't know if it will change your mind, but they're both amazing.
@@aidenafshar9274 i love plini and think hes an amazing guitarist, but guthrie is streets ahead. better than everyone including the new wave -- henson, abasi, plini everyone are just a step below
@@rew6184 how so? I don't know enough abt guthrie to definitively say which one is better, so I'm curious what makes you think so.
@@aidenafshar9274 Not the guy you asked but I agree with him so I thought I'd answer. I love Henson, Tosin and all those guys. And not just the guitarists, every single member of their bands is an absolute virtuoso. So technically, I don't think Guthrie is THAT much superior to them. I'm frightened at the thought of what Tosin Abasi will be able to play when he has 20 more years of experience lol.
But Guthrie's stuff is just more...musical I suppose? More melodic. It's calming but it also takes you by surprise. It's not technical for the sake of being technical.
The biggest part of Guthrie's growth was actively listening to music. He would listen to anything he could get his hands on. Guthrie said his father taught him his first chords when he was like 3 or 4. Dude spent his entire childhood either practicing guitar or sitting with his ears perked in front of the record player. I just think all of that led to him having a much larger arsenal or bag of tricks than your average virtuoso.
Steve Vai has his own style. You still go 'wtf' when you listen to it but it's unexpected in the ways you expected it be(if that makes sense?). Same with most guys. Guthrie just has more versatile chops imo. (And his improvising would put anyone to shame)
@@chrisj1319 I absolutely agree with your statement about the improvising. I haven't honestly heard enough of him to determine how much better he is than the new wave guitarists, but I also don't doubt that he is around the same level technically. A decent amount of the new wave stuff is technical for the sake of it, but in cases like polyphia I'm okay with it because it's made up for with everything else. Regardless, I think the main reason I don't fully believe he is that far above everyone else (other than just not hearing him much due to lack of releases), is that I haven't really seen him push boundaries the same way the new wave guys are. One thing I do want to specify though is that the popular new wave guitarist's/bands aren't pushing that far compared to some smaller bands like vildhjarta, car bomb, slice the cake, humanity's last breath, wilderun, etc (i know these are all fairly heavy bands but nothing else came to mind).
I listen to this song every time I brush my teeth.
I feel like this track probably single-handedly inspired the entire current generation of modern progressive rock/metal lead guitarists. The main lick is so intervalic and I don’t think I’ve heard anything that dates back further with the same quality to it. So brilliant and inspiring. I’m so glad players like Tosin Abasi lead me to check out Guthrie’s work

how can anybody compares this to Satriani or Vai? Guthrie's playing is something completely different and unexplainable..
there is no comparison in art only in skill. Satriani and Vai are great musicians.
+Desi guy They are truly great. I don't get why people have to compare the guitar virtuosos as if one HAS to be better than the other. Each one is good at something. If they were all comparable, then they won't be individually renowned. Malmsteem would be Gilbert would be Johnson would be Satriani would be Vai would be Govan, etc. What a boring world!
I was like that too. With time they will understand what an artist is and if there was no difference there wouldn't be music. It would be like eating salty food everyday missing out on erotic cakes lol
+Str Kat I will say that his playing is unique, but he explains himself quite eloquently in many interviews!
+Str Kat Let me quote Guthrie in response to people comparing musicians - "So much of what's good about music ceases to make sense when you attempt to analyse it from a 'who's the best?' perspective..."
Guthrie Govan is one of the most sophisticated guitar players of the more famous and popular guitar players. a lot of jazz approaches.
