Every time I listen to a Navy guy and F-14 pilots in particular relating a story, I’m so impressed with how honest they are. No embellishment or “There I was” story telling.
Watch Tomcat Tales. It's free on RUclips. I was aboard the IKE in the early 80's, good times, and I've watched it twice already. Night launch of F-14's at full afterburner off the waist cats was the coolest thing I've ever seen.
I'm not a pilot but was an aircrewman in a helo squad. We were flying plane gard one day and out of the blue one of the pilots smells smoke. So they called in for an emergency landing. As they (the pilots) began to do there procedure for an emergency landing by this time we were approaching just forward of the island to get back aboard ship. I being an aircrewman was always under the idea that if we ever approached the carrior flight deck with the landing gear NOT DOWN the pilot owed the crewman a fifth of booze if the crewman informed the pilot of this situation. So as we approached I keyed my Mike saying " landing gear sir" . No reply. Again as we were getting closer to the carrior. "Landing gear sir " again NO RESPONSE. By this time we were just about over the cat walk of the carrior. So this time I reached up between the 2 pilots and pushed the landing gear lever down. For all my action all I got was a " THANK YOU CREWMAN". 😢 NO BOOZE. guess it is what it is.😊
Thankyou for sharing.......as I've always said, the pilot doesnt earn his keep flying the airplane......rather he aviates using the knowledge of knowing what to do when stuff goes sideways is what matters most!
@@TomcatTales outstanding. You got wacky Ward Carrol jealous. All great stuff. A lot of the Vietnam era are getting up there. Hopefully as you post these videos others will come forward. Thank you very much.
F-35 has far superior Integrated Power Pack power generation without the vulnerabilities of 1950s-1960s electrical systems architecture that the Tomcat had. That's why only 1x F-35C has been written off with zero fatalities and 73 F-14As were written off just in its first 10 years of service, with at least 19 fatalities in those 10 years. There are more redundancies that are more robust in the F-35C, with more reliance on fly-by-light DFLCS and self-contained Elecyrohydrostatic Actuators that aren't subject to a central hydraulic pressure system. F-35s have superior power plants and vastly-superior fault avoidance/management systems. It's also the easiest fighter to bring back in Naval aviation history.

This series is rapidly becoming a favourite go-to for Naval Aviation! Awesome!!!!

A certain pucker factor was achieved.
New definition of a "CLEAN JET". Too clean.
man...i love these aviator stories!!💯
Wow , made it back safe . That's what counts. I was USN '74 to '79 BT2 , DD-876 DESRON 37.
Feet, great Tomcat sea story!
Thank you thank you, proud to be American.👍

Great stuff! Wow never routine
Curious if you knew my father Captain Sam Mowad, he was a Commander and dental officer on the USS Kitty Hawk during that same time.

Wow just wow! Great story and great presentation.
Excellent, excellent, excellent video! I really enjoy listening to these stories. This is great stuff!
TOMCATS!!!!!!
Any landing is a good landing. Tomcat for life.
Makes you wish part of this interview process went over “What my callsign is and How I got it”. I am guess either big feet or two left left haha
Where are you getting this footage? Its good
When I was flying the Tomcat, I was able to collect a bunch of videos from buddies in other squadrons.

very nice video!!!!!, I have a question, at what AoA the F-14 stalls (or units of AoA)?
Depends on airspeed, altitude, and weight.
15K , clean configuration, for dogfight.
normal 1V1 weight , ground deck set up to FL080 ,the AoA that you are checking not to reach it?
Imagine if this happened to an F-35... would just be a flying brick
Uhhh it might NOT fly at all!!!!!!

Has anybody in the Navy ever heard of RAIN???
How much fuel is wasted landing military aircraft every year? It must be astronomical.
