    There is indeed other models in Southern Livery. There’s Bachmann’s class 171 & the Dapol Class 73.

    I was born in late 1957 and for my first Christmas on the planet my father and my grandfather both bought me a trainset. The former bought me a 3 car DMU and the latter a little tank engine with 4 or 5 wagons and a brake van (track and points also included with each train set.) To say that models these days have moved on light years is an understatement. I am extremely envious of your good fortune too as I live in a small flat with no room for anything like that. Mind you, I did drive the real things for 40 odd years (now retired) so maybe I need a rest from trains for a while longer. There was a special something about those old Southern juice rail trains that you can't quite put your finger on though. Good luck in your hobby. I shall watch with interest.

      I was also thinking, you don’t need a big space for a model layout.
      Check out my four short videos over Christmas about my Christmas Table Centrepiece. A 009 small tail chaser, very small.
      For something bigger, N gauge is great and (to be honest) has a nicer range of modern rolling stock.

    Up until this version Hornby had the motor in the saloon so it is an improvement. Whereas the CEP originally had the motor in the guards van, but when it got refurbished the guards van got moved to the trailer coach. For them to move the motor they would have had to completely redesign the chassis. Hornby are just catching up and removing all the errors from their previous dogs dinner of VEP units. Oddly though they haven’t released them with the more popular liveries as blue grey and NSE would greatly outsell the southern livery unit as I suspect they will hang around and Hornby won’t release any more

      I completely agree with your comments. For me, the motor being hidden vs the Bachmann equivalent-type models which have it exposed is a positive for Horby (for a change!).
