For 20 years I stay on my yearly visits in Cape town always in Khayelitsha (B&B) and never have had any problems there. (I'm white, european). Yes there are loads of challenges and poverty but 99% are lovely friendly people who wouldn't do any harm. The endless misleading crime talk in South Africa is foremost a result that the several ethnic groups have failed since 1994 to find a way to each others. In the western cape the white racismn is still rife. But I'm optimistic that this will change with the present youth.
