    I think T’challa’s decision was pretty reasonable, especially considering they have people like War Machine who can go ham on the one spot they’re all going through, to get a lot of them all at once. Also, the Wakandan armies aren’t infinite, they might not want to spread their army too thin

    • @apenasmaisumdiogo.7115
      @apenasmaisumdiogo.7115 5 лет назад +10

      Yes, the problem is that they didn't have a big weapon besides war machine to stop the army, so the Outriders would all spread again. But, considering that Black Order's objective was not conquer Wakanda, but just get into the lab and take Vision, the best option was make the army concentrate where they could see them

    • @lacari0805
      @lacari0805 4 года назад +3

      Also they probably didn’t have room for lots of heroes or soldiers around/near vision as it was in the city centre, plus actively moving the battle or part of it really close to vision means there’s a chance his building or even room could be affected by the battle and disrupt his stone stuff. Plus having the line of defence at the furthest point from vision means if anyone does get through the good army they’re clearly seen and it takes time before they actually get to vision giving t(e good guys time to stop them

    • @themagicpencilanimations192
      @themagicpencilanimations192 4 года назад +2

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher 3 года назад

      I mean, this is right outside of the city, right? It makes a lot of sense that they wouldn't want to really have to fight these guys INSIDE the town because if they won then there'd be a lot of meaningless death and destruction. It's a tough call, but it makes way more sense to thin their numbers out as much as they can and then mop up the remains afterwards. Considering how many guys they're facing, they're able to hold rank REALLY well like this, I think.
      Should they have had more people protecting Vision himself? Sure. But that's a bit different from the force in the battle at the moment who were there to actively keep the enemy from getting to him to begin with.
      Although all of this ignores the way bigger issue! Because if these guys can control when the shield is up or down in that area, then what's stopping them from letting a few guys through and then trying to lower the shield again to keep Thanos's forces coming in more manageable waves? I don't know how well it would have worked, but it'd be way easier than the alternative of just never trying to re-close the shield and facing a constant flow of enemies.

    My comments:
    Sin 90: There's a long-standing tradition of military commanders meeting to have a chat before kicking off hostilities. Or sportsball captains, for that matter. There are a number of possible reasons to do so - it lets you size up your opponent in person (which can help with understanding and anticipating their strategies); it offers both sides an opportunity to agree/modify the RoE; it avoids any accusations of sneak attacks; it buys a bit more time before people start dying; it offers a last chance to surrender... Not all of those apply to this situation, but it's a strong enough tradition to be the "done thing" even at times when it doesn't serve much purpose...
    Sin 94: So, option A is to get the enemy to confront your army where you can bring all your forces to bear, on a pretty good battlefield, like they did in the movie. What's option B, exactly? Pack up the army and ship them back to the city, where they're surrounded by civilians and expensive infrastructure? spread the army out to try to cover the entire shield boundary? make a stand closer to the city where you have to redeploy your army before the enemy can get there, and persuade the enemy to come at your army rather than simply flanking around them? It's all very well pointing out that there are downsides to letting all the enemy through the shield in one place rather than 10% getting through the shield, but coming through widely dispersed, but unless you propose an alternative that's actually better, having a downside isn't an argument that it's not the best possible option.
    Sin 100: Since Hela used to wield Mjolnir, and she was banished before Thor was around, it seems unlikely he had anything to do with its forging...

      @josethebioform7519 4 года назад +2

      Essentially they made a choke point which is kind of huge in combat. Tunnel of death. I mean look at trench warfare for a micro version. One shot of a shotgun you can take down 2 to 3 enemies or since this was melee look at the spartan in that one pass during 300 the numbers of t he persians didnt matter because they limited the amount that got to them at one time at which point it becomes an endurance test

    • @notdemomantf2294
      @notdemomantf2294 Месяц назад

      For an alternative view, let's look at the win conditions of both armies:
      While one side will die at the end of the fight, that's merely a byproduct. The Wakandan Army wins if they buy enough time for Vision to be separated from the Mind Stone so Scarlet Witch can destroy it, while Thanos' Army wins by reaching Vision and getting the stone.
      As such, making an opening for the mindless enemies to filter through is the best choice, as it would allow for the enemies to always remain in your sight and prevent an encirclement that would greatly increase the difficulty of defense.
      The option that one guy mentioned of retreating to the capital may work, but we have no idea if there is a way to shrink the gigantic shield down to a size that defends the city only, it may put civilians in danger, and it greatly raises the chances of some enemies slipping through the net and reaching Vision.
      Now, this ends up mattering little due to the sneak attack they pulled off by claiming the guy was dead, but in terms of tactics it was one of if not the best possible moves.

  • @Projectiveparticle
    @Projectiveparticle 5 лет назад +45

    The meeting at the shield is a nod to antiquated clashes of armies: it's a parlay of sorts between the leaders of each group prior to the combat. The MCU has established that a good number of futuristic alien species use a "higher form of warfare", which utilizes quite a bit of CQC and antiquated formation fighting, so this totally makes sense in the context of the scene.

    How sure are we that these vehicles are intended as mass troop transporters and not simply being re-purposed as them in an emergency? Wakanda would have had little need to move troops quickly before this since they have rarely been attacked and it would explain the many apparent design flaws.

      Thats was accually my point too. You could assume that these are not soldier transport "boats", but rather cargo transport "boats" that were quickly used to transport the Wakandan Army, because they had nothing else more suited at the time. That would explain why the area is quite small and why the anti-gravity motors take up the space that they do: In order to be able to transport heavy loads from A to B. For example gallons of rhino milk!

      Additionally, when it zooms in on the bird's eye view of the troops jumping out, you can CLEARLY SEE HANDRAILS running along the outside of the standing area, with another rail in the centre. You could pack troops in 8 abreast and they'd all still be able to reach rails (one troop standing directly next to a rail, the one next to that troop reaching behind their back to reach the same rail; two to a rail both for the outside rail and inside rail on both sides, makes up eight), and I think that being able to maintain your footing on a bumpy ride with only one handhold is a perfectly reasonable thing to expect of elite warriors, considering that millions of bus commuters of every variety do it every day

      "We're gonna kick your asses."
      "Try it bitches, see what happens."
      Does it make sense? Not really, it's just cool. I like the shield between them as well, implying that that's all that's stopping them from killing each other right then and there. It also suggests a modicum of mutual respect and particular animosity between the characters. AND it further highlights how Cull Obsidian and Proxima Midnight aren't just everyday goons- they're part of Thanos' elite and handpicked Black Order, and they're about equal to the Avengers in terms of power.

    Re: Opening the shield
    I'm on the side of it being a good idea to open it, with the caveat that I haven't seen the movie and don't know how the shield works beyond what's in this video.
    1. Energy. Yeah, they have troop transports, but even just getting into position a second time would wear everyone down very slightly.
    2. Controlling the flow of enemies. Assuming the enemies can go around or force their way through the shield, opening a hole to let them through could be the best option. It lets the defenders, not the attackers, decide how many enemies can get through at once, and also lets them only enter in a place that the defenders find useful, like a flat area where they can be carpet-bombed by War Machine.
    3. The alternative of withdrawing to the city doesn't seem that great. At best, I think the buildings would function similarly to the shield by funneling the enemies in predictable paths, but with the downsides of allowing the enemies to attack from more angles while also making the defenders suffer the same funneling effect if they have to move. The only exception to the defenders suffering from the funnel effect is if they stay still, like by defending only one building. Of course, that leaves them open to getting totally surrounded.
    And, of course, because it's probably easier to make a battle in an open field look good/massive than in potentially crowded city streets while still looking like a battle instead of a flood.

Some folks claim that the U.S. Corps of Engineers blew part of the levi near lower-class neighborhoods to ease the pressure on the rest of the levi and keep it from flooding the richer districts. I'd agree, with only one massive issue with the tactic - The outriders outnumber the wakandans, and their greatest advnatage is speed and manouvering, as well as isolating people and grouping up on them. So the wakandans decide to open the shield,let them run into an open field where they can use their full advantages, and then charge into the loose formation of outriders.
      What would have been far more sane and far more more effective to negate every single advnatage of the outriders would have been to move the big wakandan shield-wall formations with spears up to the chokepoint, to hold like a greek phalanx - imagine the battle of thermopylae, destroying the enemy's advantage of numbers while maximizing their advantages of skill and equipment, as well as letting their more mobile elements (war machine, black panther) move around behind the enemy formation instead of in the center of battle

    • @donovanzanz
      @donovanzanz 4 года назад +1

      @@shunonnorth3602 the problem with that is that they wouldn't want any of their own elements outside the shield, in case there's another form of artillery (I.e. orbital platform that perhaps delivered the Outrider transports in the first place) available to the CoT. They don't know anything about the CoT, their methods or weaponry, only the advantages they have at their own disposal; so if the possibility exists that the CoT may be able to target anything outside, then it's a better idea to contain the action inside the shield.

    So, on the opening the shield infront of them and away from the city serves two massively good purposes.
    you fight further away from vision and the civilians whom you wish to protect, and you group up your most powerful forces the avengers who have group training so they can support and buffer each others weaknesses in a small area rather than being picked off one at a time, the whole avengers movies have been trying to say "we are better together" so having a plan that splits them all up into solo fights would break that message also.

    They don't have the numbers to defend an area that great and, within the movie, the goal of this entire battle is to stall... the decisions that are being made are with the intent to make the battle long enough for Shuri to remove and destroy the stone.

  • @triplebog

    In reference to Black Panther opening the shield wall. I thought it was a smart idea because I don't think the lizard boys are actually trying to get the infinity stone, they are just gonna kill and eat, then thanos's children would show up and get the stone.
    With this in mind; think of the size of a shield encompassing an entire city. It would be absolutely insanely large and impossible to cover; multiple lizard boys would easily be able to sneak into the city. While the avengers could just station more people around vision, innevitably this would just wind up costing a great deal of innocent wakandan civilian lives as the lizard boys broke into the city and rampaged through it. Especially since hunting down lizard boys in a city when you don't know how many there are or where they are would be extremely difficult. And killing them all would likely result in more civilian casualties as they are caught in the cross fire.
    "Falling back to the city" is not an option, cause cities haven't been built to be defendable from a ground assault for ages.

    • @kabobawsome
      @kabobawsome 5 лет назад +1

      IIRC the city was evacuated. So they shouldn't have gone out to meet them in the first place. There were no lives at stake beyond soldiers and the Avengers, why would you go out to a place that gives the attackers increased advantage, like the ability to flank at all. They should have been somewhere naturally defensible, like the city or the forest around the lab.
      Oh, and cities aren't good for defense because they are built to be (although it exponentially increases a city's defensibility when they are), they are good because they have a lot of chokepoints. It's much harder for an enemy to flank you when you know exactly every direction they could possibly come from and station people there. And it's much easier to hit an enemy running down an empty street at you than it is to hit an enemy able to maneuver around you.
      Multiple buildings also help, as buildings are naturally defensible for the same reason as cities and can also be used as sniper spots or machine-gun nests, meaning literally any of thousands of buildings can attack you. So for an army to be totally effective and safe from snipers and machine-gun nests, they have no choice but to clear every building with a flat roof, balcony, or windows. This immensely slows an assault, meaning information can reach a defending army and they can regroup and respond fairly easily. And if they don't clear snipers and machine-gun nests (as the Outriders are mindless, so I doubt they would), they can (and should) end up losing massive numbers to them, meaning their assault is still slowed, if less so. This means a defending army would not be able to respond as well but has to respond to less.
      Finally, the streets of a city line up well with the way both the Outriders and the Wakandans fight: in melee. For that, I will refer back to the Greeks and the completely unfair-to-attackers tactic that was the phalanx. Outriders would have likely literally piled up in corpses if the Wakandans could have used that.
      So imagine, if you will, that they turn the shield inward to the city, open up one section down a wide street with no turn-offs, some sit at the other end in a phalanx formation, and others remain in the higher floors of buildings aimed down at the street. War Machine runs regular bombing runs down the street, starting a little bit ahead of the phalanx to prevent friendly fire. Bucky remains as a commander for the building snipers and machine-gun nests, while Steve runs commanding duties for the phalanx. Black Panther stands guard at the lab to negate any risk of failure. All of the other heroes are dedicated to elite troop hunting AKA taking down the only 3 sentient enemy combatants.
      The Outriders would have been decimated and the Wakandan troops would have barely taken any losses. Hell, the heroes would have been in so much better shape by the time Thanos got there that they actually would have had a good chance at taking him, having most of an army and fighting shape Vision and Wanda on their side. Plus there would be the fact that it wasn't blatantly and immediately obvious where the stone went, forcing Thanos to figure it out mid-battle.
      So yeah, the decision was pretty bad, if you ask me.

      And the main focus was to keep the attention because they kinda actually KNEW shit was going to be bad. They were just hoping for a chance to keep it controlled. But Vision needed protecting. I think that letting them swarm would make it easier to lose.

    I noticed a slight oversight in this vid! Thor, in fact, did not assist in creating Mjolnir. When Hela destroys the murals in Asgard, there is a picture of her wielding it, which also gives reason to why she is able to hold and destroy Mjolnir early in Ragnarok. It is also stated that Thor did not know who she was before he saw Odin for the last time, meaning he was either too young to remember her (and therefore unable to assist in creating Mjolnir) or was not born before her imprisonment. Otherwise, the video is really great and I like your personality a lot!

    If they let the enemy go around the shield, they'd be putting civilians at risk, rather than keeping them targeting only the military forces in this field. T'Challa cares about his people and wants to avoid them being in danger.

    Personally, I would have taken three sections of the barrier and randomly close and open them multiple times over the length of the battle. It would have the desired effect of using the wall as a meat grinder, would continue funneling most troops through, and then have some Wakandans make a perimeter around the capital while the flying heroes can patrol the perimeters and pick off any that get out of line. I mean, it's not all that different, but it would cut the army into more manageable waves and has the added bonus of taking out troops every time the opening is shifted

      Though the main problem with that idea is whether or not the shield could handle doing that frequently, as it could just lead to the shield completely burning out in some areas due to excessive burden of rapidly switching it.

    • @MasterofInterspace
      @MasterofInterspace 5 лет назад

      @@magnatcleo2043 that's fair, I'm sure. We don't know the extent of such things, though, because Wakanda tech is all high tech and generally has a fictional material, Vibranium, integrated. I will concede to have not thought of burning out the tech controlling the barrier, though, bravo in pointing that out

    8:38 It seemed clear to me that the Avengers were basically trying to tell them, "Walk away now while you still can". Captain America and Black Panther both try to show their enemies mercy whenever they can, and it's no different here.
    As for the Children of Thanos, I imagine it was to see if they could get through the shielding, but that one's more of a stretch.

    I will put forward an argument for the 'trash-talk' scene.
    Proxima's comment was meant to ensure they didn't suspect anything. If they'd asked, and she'd said 'he's recovering', or any other statement that showed he was still alive, it's possible they might send some people back to help guard Vision better, just in case. By stating that he's effectively dead, she's making sure that they don't even think about him, and don't consider the idea that he might be alive, or doing something. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but it seems like a comment made to help ensure the success of his mission, by erasing him as a threat from the Avenger's minds.
    And, as other people have pointed out, them being there was likely to test the shield or something similar.

      just the act of standing up there draws the avengers' attention to the front so they're less likely to have someone head back to check on vision, also

    The whole "pissing match at the shield" is called a parlay. The avengers walked up to the shield, and proxima midnight and cull obsidian walk up just in case that the humans see the forces and odds stacked against them and could have perhaps given up the stone. It's a fairly common practice when two armies meet up in war time.

    I think with Sin 90, the Children of Thanos were doing that 'courtesy messenger' thing where they say something along the lines of "our Lord the Plum Thumb offers you one last chance at surrender." This seems like the most plausible answer to me and I mention it because I'm surprised it wasn't brought up, even if it was to disprove it because the Children of Thanos never actually say anything like that.

    In regards to the Wakandan transport hover crafts, I would argue since they are very technologically advanced, their crafts could have motion stabilizers to make it possible to simply standing on them while they travel and turn at high speeds.
