- Michael Brecker had an incredible musical career spanning over 900 albums on which he played. Beside recording albums under his own name which were strictly jazz affairs, he played in numerous jazz-rock and straight jazz groups, but the majority of those 900 albums on which he can be heard, was from collaboration with many famous rock and pop artists.

What a beautiful listening room you have!
I met Mike on my first year at Berklee,as soon as I saw the Flyer at the performance center,I got my ticket. On the day of the sound check by coincidence I saw him at the back door and he glance at me and invited me inside,very cold February day,we became friends for the rest of his life. I have only positive and beautiful memories of him,not to mention that he influenced me as a and a human. I’m always thankful and grateful. He’s memory will live forever.

I've met and played with many incredible jazz, rock and even reggae artists. They welcomed me into their lives wholeheartedly. Makes me so glad I became a musician.

My saxophone teacher was friends with Michael Brecker and actually did a few gigs with him in the 90s and worked on a project together.
My saxophone teacher was also in NYC for a jazz educators conference when he heard that Brecker died. It really messed him up because because even though he wasn’t close with Brecker, he admired him as a musician and a person.

The first time I heard him consciously was one "Maxine" by Donald Fagen. A fantastic solo, inspiring me to discover his work with Randy and own projects. Also love his work with Steps Ahead and other artists, for example Mike Stern.

Thanks for this great overview on the beautiful and talented person that is Michael Brecker. I have almost all solo albums and his main jazz collaborations. This video in a way brings back many memories (even on his performances in te Netherlands I was lucky to have experienced), but also promts me to revisit and listen to his work again. And quickly buy the last missing albums for my collection.

This is a great little documentary. If you dig back a little further, you'll find some of Michael's important recordings that are even earlier than The Brecker Brothers album. "In Pursuit of the 27th Man" - Horace Silver (1973) (his solo on Gregory Is Here is sick!), and a band that he a and Randy were a part of with Barry Rogers and Will Lee called Dreams. The albums "Dreams" (1970) and "Imagine My Surprise" (1971) laid a lot of the groundwork for what would come with The Brecker Brothers. He also did several dates with the great Hal Galper in the earlier 70s that are very much worth a listen. You can hear how he was trying to work with the influences of Coltrane to find his sound, and how those ideas would evolve much later on during his solo album phase.

Fair enough! One thing you may not realize is the EWI is a MIDI controller, so it can be used to play any synth or sampler. If it sounds dated, that’s because of the synth being used, not the EWI itself! The EWI can sound like literally anything! Thanks again for the great video! 😁

I was at a musical venue near what used to be my home, in India, called "Shisha Cafè". A place of friends, where we played some gigs. That night, as I entered my home, took off my shoes, sat on the sofa right at the entrance, and just started crying

Michael Brecker's guest performances on The Section's first album (1972) provides a good reference of the mix of popular/rock music and jazz/jazz fusion that he was playing at the time. That's because although The Section played on popular/rock albums, this particular album comprises only instrumental pieces. Unusually, i think that he even plays soprano saxophone on one track.
I remember him early on .I regretted not meeting him when I saw him in a club .my first album by him is called the section Doing the meatball and swan song on soprano sax a first.The music was jazz rock first rate his jazz was always huge on improvisation.I missed him dearly. Randy is alive and well

Thank you for this awesome document about Michel Brecker, but bro I think you are forgetting two important recordings . In 1981 Steps recorded "Smokin' In The Pit", a live album. And in this incredible album there is an explosive and great composition by Mike called : Not Ethiopia. In 1981 Michael Brecker recorded The Three Quartet, a memorable and serious album by Chick Corea. The solos of Brecker in this album are fire.
Thank You for great comment. "Smokin' In The Pit" is great album indeed. I didn't mention all of Steps and Steps Ahead albums, so this one was skipped as well. But, it stands as good as the other mentioned, for sure. Three Quartets is a collaboration with Chick Corea and I had to limit overview on only Breckers solo albums. Otherwise, video would last days:) Btw, Three Quartets is excellent album and I listen to it often.

I have about 300 jazz fusion records and he’s there on several of them. One of my favourite solos from him is on Kazumu Watanabe’s ‘Cokumo Island’. I was grappling with fusion at the time and that track just did it for me.

I’m right with you are almost everything, which is rare, but watching jazz videos. Couple of things, though, the first of which is Gary Burton is by far the greatest chess vibraphonist of all time, and in every way. I’m sure Mike, Maneri would agree, and for crying out loud he invented the way everyone plays the vibes now. Secondly, Michael Brecker’s collaboration of three quartets with Chick Corea. is in my opinion the pinnacle of this whole period.
Yes, of course, Gary Burton is at the top. I did make a video about PASSANGERS. You are also right about Corea albums, but I had to limit albums to Mr Breckers own records.

what a loss... my friend married Randy Brecker. She contacted me for a donor but it was truly too late for him. As a musician, I cannot thank him enough! Yes, Coltrane was a Giant, no doubt, but Brecker was unique. In every way.

There is no "Illuminations" in "Infinity" album. McCoy Tyner has and album call "Illuminations"

Yes, You are right, it was meant to be written "Impressions", not "Illuminations". But, "Illuminations" is outstanding album, so no wander it messed up my thought flow:)
Its a mistake, I am sorry. The year was 1996, not 1967. I was born in 1967, so getting old...and forgeting things:) Brecker was 18 in 1967.
Nice tribute to the great late Michael Brecker, however, I can tell your view on his music is a fan and not a musician`s perspective... I would have liked that more.

Sad that You see it that way. I can't disagree more. I have almost 10.000 albums, mostly jazz and among dozens of great tenors, Brecker stands out easily.
