A layout like this....you dont care if the trains arent running. Not just a huge layout, but an incredibly detailed sceniced one. Mad sick scenery....the bridges, carpets of greenery, the mountains, the buildings...every man-boys dream layout that the rest of us can only aspire to. Just....WOW!
I had the pleasure of seeing this layout in person 2 yrs ago and its a must see for anyone interested in modelling or in engineering. Every engine is brass and every structure is scratch built by Mr Zane in his workshop he has a museum as well with a world class collection of engines. Hes also one of the nicest guys ever i never knew him or met him and i talked to him thru email and he offered me to come see his layout so that was special in its self. Thanks for sharing this - Matt
An absolutely amazing layout and even better to see in person. I have been very fortunate to see this layout in person several times from the original before Howard added on to his basement with living space above which he’s done twice that I know of. The “hidden” little details that you catch on your 3rd or 4th time looking at a particular scene are everywhere and equate to a modern Easter egg in a video.
The attention to detail, and natural blending of manmade objects and forests makes the difference between observing a model, vs getting lost in the beauty and authenticity of the scenes. Master craftsman work for sure.
I was lucky enough to meet Howard back in the late 90s at one of his shows at the MD state fair grounds. I went to the show to pickup some brass engines from the late Bob Brass and Howard was there. He talked to me for about 30 minutes just like we were old friends, and this was the only time I had met him. I hope he is safe and well.
MY GOD...this is one of the most amazing things ive ever seen...........I can only imagine how much JUST THE TREES must have cost, even if he found them outside and then used spray adhesive and simple tree fluff from a normal source like Woodland Scenics... LET ALONE the absolutely HUGE mountains TONS of greenery on those mountains and intricately detailed cities. Everything has been weathered, painted and modded to look more real, and then tons of people and random little greeblies added too
Howard, I consider myself to be a pretty dam good model detailer, either working on planes, ships or my favorite HO set up. My friend you nailed. It's like standing in time. I can watch this all day long. My layout isn't ever done but, it's PERIOD CORRECT. Everything has to be from around 1963 and earlier. Including the phone booths. Lol ....Very well done. Keith Stone Boise, Idaho
When the time comes this treasure should should be in the Smithsonian for all to appreciate. Put it on a dvd, so we could relax and dream. You could stop and magnify scenes that interest you. You sir are an artist of the first degree
i was there too.. a few years back !!! i was able to see them running . howard is a good guy to talk to, to find some good hints for things might go back in a few more years.
This isn't a train layout oh no it is a miniature world with trains, fabulous. I like the way he did the edges, makes them part of the diorama not the box holding it.
When I see a massive work of art like this, I wonder what long range plans the designer/builder made for its future. This one does not look like it would be easy to move to a rail museum, for example. Hard for widow to sell a house with something like that in the basement. If it doesn't get preserved, the modeling world loses, like the loss of John Allen's.
"...like the loss of John Allen's." And my father's as well. My pop was a DAV. In all probability, his past made him accepting of an abrupt end. He enjoyed his hobby.., and died suddenly. It was his 2nd family who lived then and continued to live with no joy, no pop, no magnificent little world it could have been used as a 'real town & country in any movie. Twenty x forty-foot, hand-dug, hand-poured concrete basement (from a crawl-space!) They sold the house, someone ripped every particle that wasn't concrete, plumbing, house wiring, or the furnace. No traces left. I would have advertised the home in every MRR mag, or show, and, or club I could find.., had I been invited or asked for advice.
Being invited for a private viewing of a layout like THIS one, is like being invited to an ice cream factory and NOT allowed to get any samples... 'Nuff said!!!... Good stuff thanks for posting.
Howard Zane is right up there with Rembrandt, Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, et al. In fact, the SCALE of his acheivement should make it one of the wonders of the art world. John Allen's layout was impressive, but this, in my humble opinion, is even better. I cannot get over the level of detail everywhere you look. I agree with others that this MUST NOT DISAPPEAR after Howard. (may he live to be 100) Too important.
At 7:35... What is the round-about turn-style called? That turns and can park the 🚂🚂🚂trains in the garage? So cool... I always wanted that part as a kid. Never got it because it was like $150 dollars and my parents said that would by like 80 feet of straight track. 🚂
How the heck does one deal with dust accumulation on a layout this size, with ao many trees and bushes? I'd think the entire room would have to be climate controlled and have a serious HEPA filter system ! :)
Awesome video. Actualiteit it's not bad that no trains were running. This made me appreciate the details even more. What's not to like here. Thank you for the 4K video. * I had to smile when I saw the train with the Viagra wagon (12.14).
*jaw drops at the opening sequence* ....this must be the largest privately owned railroad in the country.... my GOD I am just trying to wrap my head around how one man could do all this... its club sized..... not to mention how deep it is, how does he service and work on the parts in the back areas? they are way out of arm's reach.
if hes anything like other model railroaders I have met, he was probably dumbfounded why you didnt ask him to run something. Being how big this layout is and how vast his roster of trains, he probably wanted to show them off.
If that were the case, I'd expect he'd volunteer to run something. From what I understand, it's usually a team effort to get trains up and running on his layout. Turnouts need to be set and parked trains moved out of the way, etc., so train running is limited to special nights with his good buddies.
Man! I would love to see a version of this on TRS19 I aint the one to model but If I was able to I would spend days and nights but if I was creative this would be a project worth working on
I'm interested in trains but don't have either the skill or patience. I collected Code 3 fire trucks and wanted to build three fire stations for the trucks I have. A city duel stall. A airport station with 8 stalls and a county station with five stalls. What material would you recommend for walls and roofs?
The nicest layout I've ever seen second to one video I saw where a guy turned his whole backyard into a layout....anyone reading this look it up. Dude had real koi in his "lake" that were scaled to be "whales" (lol). But yes this type of layout is invaluable
I apologize for the two Amtrak diesels on the viaduct. A visitor had his grandson along and he wanted to see an Amtrak train. Before I could place the hopper on a siding and add the coaches, the little kid became more interested in a text message on his device. Oh well......there is a fine reason why I hate the 21st. Century!
Somewhere there is a national scale model train station museum. Probably in Nebraska or Kansas. And those people there are just like shaking their head going... We've been charging $$$ people to see our 🚂🚂🚂 exhibits? Look at this thing!!! It's 20x bigger than our set up.

A work of art......
Simply stunning craftsmanship.....

Everytime I see another train layout I throught I already saw the best. The realism is remarkable.
Unbelievable attention to detail throughout. The mountains with the ledge peeking through... wow. Probably the best layout ive ever seen.

Wow! Everything is amazing! Your layout, your workshop and your third wife's understanding. Thanks for sharing it with us.
not his but the man who owns it must not have a wife anymore lmao
Absolutely amazing! Stunning! I have never seen a layout with so much foliage!
The amount of detail is just mind blowing

Unbelievable amount of work.Beautiful layout.
Wow. Crystal clear and steady smooth camera work. Nice job!
Impressive. I never thought anyone could rival George Sellios's layout.
It was so beautiful, that it seemed as if time had suddenly paused.
The scope and detail are epic. This is really motivating.
Awesome layout......the detail....WOW!!!! GREAT JOB
It’s not very often I watch the whole video through but with this video I wish it wouldn’t end
Amazing multi deck, fully scenic and detail layout Great undertaking, well done.
I love this layout! This is like something out of the 1930's, 40's and 50's! The streamlined era!
i was there too.. a few years back !!! i was able to see them running . howard is a good guy to talk to, to find some good hints for things might go back in a few more years.
Beautiful video and a beautiful layout. Thanks for posting.
What a beautiful layout some incredible detail work .I also love the VIAGRA chem car at 12:13 he he nice touch
He has several hidden “Easter Eggs” all over the layout similar to finding the Viagra tanker.
I am amazed! Such a cool layout. Thanks for sharing.
A great work of art. My top 5 favorite layouts
This guy is a real artist. The weathering is unbelievable! There's even litter on the street at 9:28
Stunning scenery and attention to detail. Love the camelback.
A lot of artist work on this & did a find job . I enjoy video very much. You are very good at what you do.

An outstanding layout, enjoyed the tour!
holy moly, what a fantastic model train. respect!!!
Very well done, really thought out. I like the high horizon line, little sky. I'll over look modern Amtrak train.
Fantastic world and layout!
I admire people who have the patience and attention to detail to do this.
Excellent setup proper layout so much to look at I'd like to own it brilliant job 👍🚂🚂🚂🚂🏆
Absolutely remarkable!!
Remarkable. Big thing I noticed is the amount of vegetation, just like the real world.
Being invited for a private viewing of a layout like THIS one, is like being invited to an ice cream factory and NOT allowed to get any samples... 'Nuff said!!!... Good stuff thanks for posting.
Incredible layout
Howard's layout is one of the grwats. Thanks for sharing.
I love the detail...
Just the track detail is crazy.
Wow what a great round house love it .
Love the sound effects.
....frogs croaking nice touch!
great layout dude!
I just wish my computer could handle the 2160p! lol
Truly a work of art. No trains running. Must have been a holiday.
Ich liebe diese Details! Es ist einfach nur wunderschön! Respekt ! ✔😍
Absolutely astonishing!!
To me layouts of this scope and magnitude are works of art.
If I had this layout at home, I'd never leave the house!
This is an incredible layout! Would love to see it.
Thats sick man.... great job!

WoW , Looks Awesome in 4K .
A lot of beatiful detail here everywhere u look how many ft of track do u have like to see some trains runing next time.K
Wow that's one amazing layout!!
How the heck does one deal with dust accumulation on a layout this size, with ao many trees and bushes? I'd think the entire room would have to be climate controlled and have a serious HEPA filter system ! :)
That's exactly what I was wondering. My layout is only a 4x8 and I still find spiderwebs in my trees.
Labor.
@@Farwander007 Its funny, I was just thinking about this very thing.
This is a builders layout, the trains are an excuse to build the rest of it. This has to be fav layout ever.
Awesome video. Actualiteit it's not bad that no trains were running. This made me appreciate the details even more. What's not to like here.
Thank you for the 4K video.
* I had to smile when I saw the train with the Viagra wagon (12.14).
Exactly what I just said... LOL! Without the trains, people will actually look more at the scenery in detail.
9:24 How does he get the concrete and sidewalks to look so real?? What are they made out of? It's AMAZING!!
Awesome layout!
There is another dimension in time. . . .and this is it.
great layout. I think how many years he does need to built this dream of a model railroad
oh ya i love the way he painted his hallway
Amazing pice of work
What are the names of those Engines at 1:25 to 1:33....? Also, is this layout HO or O gauge?
Holy smokes that is amazing.
UNREAL, is all I can say
awesome train video
What an awesome layout, I love it. The weathering looks so realistic.
Great looking layout will builded

Marvellous, perhaps yout layout could do with a diorama somewhere of Winston Link setting up to taking one of his wonderful pictures...
Good video of one of the greatest model railroads ever built. But why were there no trains running?
It was a private tour through a friend of Howard's and I didn't want to push my luck.
Thank you for the info. Wishing you and your family a happy new year.
if hes anything like other model railroaders I have met, he was probably dumbfounded why you didnt ask him to run something. Being how big this layout is and how vast his roster of trains, he probably wanted to show them off.

National Rail Strike.
Fantastic !!

The Viagra tank car at 12:09 is so funny.
W O W !!!! Just WOW!
Amazing.
Waiting for the complete cab ride video..or maybe the electrical system is broken?
One word wow!!!!!
Me: What did you all do the last 6 months of Covid lockdown?
Howard: Built This. 🚂
Fantastic layout. The detail is amazing. Where is this located? What city? Is it open to the public? I could spend hours looking at this.
The nicest layout I've ever seen second to one video I saw where a guy turned his whole backyard into a layout....anyone reading this look it up. Dude had real koi in his "lake" that were scaled to be "whales" (lol).
But yes this type of layout is invaluable
How does he operate it? Is it somehow automated or does he have a large crew of operators? It's an amazing layout!
This probably cost more than I make in a year, and I make pretty good coin.
Beautiful job, my hat goes off to you sir.
Cheers
Cool and awesome
damn that is a piece of art!! how many locomotives??
Nice layout.
Thanks!

Сколько труда вложена в эту красоту класс
Wow. Such an amazing sight, only one can dream of having that, unless you are howard. Where is he located?
