I said 30 years ago, never build near a river or stream as this will happen and I a was right. We need to go back to the 1800s to do what they did with the rivers by dredging the rivers and maintaining them, this would help a bit. Same goes for the canals around the UK. The government should be saving this water for future use as we will run out of water, hence warmer summers and droughts.

The top climate scientists working on what effects global warming would have on the UK specifically warned of increased precipitation (well over a decade ago). Add to this the removal of the speed bumps; wet lands, river bends, long lost beaver damns on rural tributaries (for agriculture expansion)... and the government(s) act surprised. Drastic measures are now needed before even worse hits.

How about those homes and communities most under threat are helped to relocate? That instead of expensive flood defenses that may or may not work, we surrender the land as an area to take flood water during floods, and help fund those people to instead to move elsewhere to rebuild? I'm not saying no flood defenses should be built, just that in some cases we should have a program to simply fund relocation instead. Though I have begun to wonder why we have insurance at all...

i am near a town and they are in a flood plain, and they have had a business that has its car park completely flooded out, and also they build a care home on a flood plain and again, all the cars underneath the property has been flooded out.

Cambridge in England was once close to sea water but the Dutch were employed to help claim the land in what is now called East Anglia.

The most long term effective way to protect homes built in the Flood Planes is to make it #Mandatory by #Law that developers Raise the land before building on it, common sense really.
That wont help as much as you think, this is why in NL we have given floodplains back to nature so we can purposely flood THAT area iso trying to make higher barriers that will only speed the water up and cause problems elsewhere. Floodplains gonna flood.....

I wonder if the Environment Agency have performed any damage assessments over say the last 25 years, and what levels of investment have been made by the government/ governments have been made. 10 years of austerity and a 5% budget reduction by every government department since the new cabinet was formed, suggest COMPLACENCY.

That's just what i was thinking. I live in a bungalow very near the Thames, but my house insurance isn't loaded against flooding, why? The bungalow is built on stilts and when flooding occurs it just flows underneath it.
Now I live on a floodplain and I have just realised something. None of these flooding areas have weeping willows! Weeping willows are excellent for water absorbance, round my area we have about at least 100 of the fuckers all around the river bank, they grow pretty big and their numerous roots insure that they absorb a lot of water and surprisingly. Even though I live on low land my town has never flooded. In summary plant more weeping willows!

A lot of rivers had flood planes,it is the developers that are at fault.You can't force a river into a channel it only speeds up the currant,it only takes 18 ins of fast flowing water to sweep you away.Water is a great force when in volume.It is hard seeing people that can not get insurance to cover there losses.The developers and planning certainly have to look at future development.
@Lee J There would be quite a lot to that mandate, like mains services that were flood proof, access that was flood proof, provision for emergency services access at all times, and possibly a method for dealing with floodwater if it did enter houses. There's also the question of whether you want to keep the flood plain working as a flood plain. If the River can't flood into the plain, then more water is going to go downstream to the next flood plain... This may not be what people want. It's difficult, but we can't all live on hilltops!
@Lee J The Environment agency has to be consulted on these proposals, and they say that their recommendations are usually followed. However, both responsibilities and budgets are spread all around government bodies, National, devolved and local, so it's very difficult to get a handle on what's being done.
We should reduce population,, this will help cut down on housing on flood plains. No point buying property on flood plains if insurance companies don't insure them.

Simply put two things, cost and, ahem, best use of land. Developers will not spend more than needed unless legislated and more and more development is taking place with fewer garages (more like just a bike shed now). Putting garages under would have a impact on height and accessibility.
@@jimporter Well I think we are going to have to consider the overall long term cost of frequent flooding when building on flood-planes and damn well get over it! If the Government, Environment Agency or local Council Planning Committees need to legislate for this then that is what they need to do! If we have to build on flood-planes then we need to make sure we are building houses that can cope with flooding and that means having a ground floor that can be flooded when necessary and designed that they can drain easily (like a garage would), this obviously wouldn't be necessary on all flood-planes, those that have effective protections in place wouldn't need it but places that don't do need it and it is silly to build houses in places you know are going to be flooded without taking that into account in the design and architecture. Of course it would add a storey to the buildings, not really sure why this would be an issue in and of itself, they will obviously be on low level ground otherwise it wouldn't be a floor-plane so are unlikely to be particularly obstructive and the whole housing estate would be in keeping with the design so it wouldn't look out of place but those buildings may not be suitable for all residents, like those with limited mobility but if they can manage two storeys I would imagine they can manage three, (those with limited mobility are more likely to want a bungalow or ground floor flat which is probably not going to be built on a flood-plane in the first place). Ultimately if we are going to build homes in places that we _know_ will be flooded then we need to build with that in mind and while it may cost a little more to build and therefore buy the house at least you won't have to pay for all the damage every time it floods, it's not like you will be able to get flood insurance so this is coming out of your pocket and therefore it makes sense to pay a little extra now rather than a lot for evermore.
Miss Chief not going to disagree with you. Many councils and national design standards are stipulate 3 storey houses for better use of land so putting garages under would make it four, then you get into fire egress issues. Couldn’t agree more that thinking has to change. Even these measures though are not enough as these would still be other issues even if the houses are safe.
@@jimporter I don't know that one extra storey would pose a problem on low lying land (irrelevant of how many the norm is ;). Fire exits are indeed a more serious issue but that is easily solved by having an external staircase, you could even have a large balcony over the _"flood floor"_ with a metal spiral staircase going up to smaller balconies on the floors above and then have external stairs going up to the first floor balcony (for general use as well as a fire exit, who wants to go down to the garage to answer the door ;). My real point is that these issues are easily solved by engineers and architects if they just try, I'm an electrical engineer if I can come up with solutions of the top of my head I am sure civil engineers and architects can do a vastly better job with but a little effort.
@@jimporter If you Search this address on Google Maps: 42 Foxhole Road, Swansea, Wales and do a street view you will see an example of some houses (two storeys over a garage) that would be fine on a flood-plane, I drive past them every so often and while they could do with a clean they were pretty smart when they were built, although this isn't on a flood-plane but you get the idea ;)
in leicester because we live in a bowl they dug a channel around the city to funnel the water away. the towns that flood a lot why can't they make a tunnel like they did with the machines that made the chunnel and bore right under the town split the river just before the town and rejoin the water way back together on the other side is that a daft idea

@Lee J The Environment agency has to be consulted on these proposals, and they say that their recommendations are usually followed. However, both responsibilities and budgets are spread all around government bodies, National, devolved and local, so it's very difficult to get a handle on what's being done.

Dredging the river’s helps
We should reduce population,, this will help cut down on housing on flood plains. No point buying property on flood plains if insurance companies don't insure them.

Why not build houses with garages of a flood friendly level on the ground floor so that the floors above are safe?
Simply put two things, cost and, ahem, best use of land. Developers will not spend more than needed unless legislated and more and more development is taking place with fewer garages (more like just a bike shed now). Putting garages under would have a impact on height and accessibility.
@@jimporter Well I think we are going to have to consider the overall long term cost of frequent flooding when building on flood-planes and damn well get over it! If the Government, Environment Agency or local Council Planning Committees need to legislate for this then that is what they need to do! If we have to build on flood-planes then we need to make sure we are building houses that can cope with flooding and that means having a ground floor that can be flooded when necessary and designed that they can drain easily (like a garage would), this obviously wouldn't be necessary on all flood-planes, those that have effective protections in place wouldn't need it but places that don't do need it and it is silly to build houses in places you know are going to be flooded without taking that into account in the design and architecture.
Of course it would add a storey to the buildings, not really sure why this would be an issue in and of itself, they will obviously be on low level ground otherwise it wouldn't be a floor-plane so are unlikely to be particularly obstructive and the whole housing estate would be in keeping with the design so it wouldn't look out of place but those buildings may not be suitable for all residents, like those with limited mobility but if they can manage two storeys I would imagine they can manage three, (those with limited mobility are more likely to want a bungalow or ground floor flat which is probably not going to be built on a flood-plane in the first place).
Ultimately if we are going to build homes in places that we _know_ will be flooded then we need to build with that in mind and while it may cost a little more to build and therefore buy the house at least you won't have to pay for all the damage every time it floods, it's not like you will be able to get flood insurance so this is coming out of your pocket and therefore it makes sense to pay a little extra now rather than a lot for evermore.
Miss Chief not going to disagree with you. Many councils and national design standards are stipulate 3 storey houses for better use of land so putting garages under would make it four, then you get into fire egress issues. Couldn’t agree more that thinking has to change. Even these measures though are not enough as these would still be other issues even if the houses are safe.
@@jimporter I don't know that one extra storey would pose a problem on low lying land (irrelevant of how many the norm is ;). Fire exits are indeed a more serious issue but that is easily solved by having an external staircase, you could even have a large balcony over the _"flood floor"_ with a metal spiral staircase going up to smaller balconies on the floors above and then have external stairs going up to the first floor balcony (for general use as well as a fire exit, who wants to go down to the garage to answer the door ;).
My real point is that these issues are easily solved by engineers and architects if they just try, I'm an electrical engineer if I can come up with solutions of the top of my head I am sure civil engineers and architects can do a vastly better job with but a little effort.
@@jimporter If you Search this address on Google Maps: 42 Foxhole Road, Swansea, Wales and do a street view you will see an example of some houses (two storeys over a garage) that would be fine on a flood-plane, I drive past them every so often and while they could do with a clean they were pretty smart when they were built, although this isn't on a flood-plane but you get the idea ;)

in leicester because we live in a bowl they dug a channel around the city to funnel the water away. the towns that flood a lot why can't they make a tunnel like they did with the machines that made the chunnel and bore right under the town split the river just before the town and rejoin the water way back together on the other side is that a daft idea
