Aquarium Setup: Axolotl Tank (Ambystoma mexicanum) - How to set up an Axolotl Tank

  • Please check out the new and better setup here: • How to set up an Axolo...
    Regarding the GRAVEL please READ the following INFORMATION!! :)
    If you need a new shirt, check our Axolotl Merch. :D
    www.redbubble.com/people/aqua...
    We set up a new tank for the axolotls. It's a 240 l tank, so more than enough space for my two axolotls. :)
    I wanted to keep as many snails as possible, so I first collected them out of the old setup. They eat the axolotl faeces and keep the tank clean.
    If you want to use gravel, be careful! The gravel should not be larger than 3mm and should not have any sharp edges! There is some special "Axolotl gravel" you can use, it is completely rounded.
    Axolotls may swallow the gravel, if the gravel has sharp edges it can seriously hurt the animal's inner organs, what can lead to its death!
    Axolotls need the opportunity to hide. Clay tubes are a perfect 'den'.
    Plants will keep the oxygen in the water on a high level.
    The water flow you can see at the end of this video looks quite high. Usually there is no big flow in this tank, I re-adjusted the filter-pipe after filming this sequence.
    I use an external eheim filter, which is running only a few hours per day and without causing much flow.
    Usually you would need to cycle the tank a few weeks before the axolotls can move in. However, as I used much of the already cycled water from the previous setup, this was not necessary in this case.

    Hey guys!
    First, these are axolotls, neotenic salamanders from Mexico.
    Second, I recommend using sand as substrate. If you want to use gravel, make sure the gravel is similar to the so-called 'axogravel' (by Aquaterratec), which means it has to be rounded (!) and smaller than 3 mm in diameter for adults. For juveniles I recommend no substrate at all (which is also fine for adults!). If the gravel is not rounded it can harm the axolotl's digestive tract while passing it. If the gravel is bigger than 3 mm (no matter if rounded or not) it can get stuck in the digestive tract, which can lead to the animal's death.
    Check out this video for my current setup (including sand as substrate): ruclips.net/video/OzUjv22atbs/видео.html

      AquaTerra-Life what type of snails would you recommend as tank mates? Because the local fish store near me have zebras and assassins but by the looks of it the assassins have quite pointy or sharp looking while some of the smaller zebra’s seem to have spikes on their shells while the large ones seem ok but I’m not sure I wanna risk them growing those spiky protrusions like the smaller ones

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  5 лет назад +1

      @@darkcreatures I have mainly added small bladder snails, as they can be eaten without causing any problems. I would recommend to not add zebra or assassin snails, as they can get stuck in the axolotl's mouth or digestive tract when getting swallowed. And additionally assassin snails have quite pointy shells. So, basically I'd only use very small species without pointy or sharp shells, that won't cause problems if getting swallowed. Shrimps like Neocaridina davidi make also nice additions to axolotl tanks. However, they will also get hunted and thus need dense planting to be able to hide.

    The gravel is a huge no! I would recommend definitely sand

    • @jameso17
      @jameso17 3 года назад +6

      hiitslucie first of all, these aren’t juveniles so these adults can have substrate which you know already, but this is were you were wrong. Sand is a good substrate for axolotl’s but the gravel he’s using is less than 3mm in diameter so it’s fine because if they accidentally ingest a bit they would be okay in the long run.

    • @Angiesunshine13
      @Angiesunshine13 3 года назад +4

    • @Finwar-yt1lp
      @Finwar-yt1lp 9 месяцев назад

      They still shouldn’t use gravel even if it is rounded and a certain size because all it takes is the Axolotl to swallow just a little bit more gravel than it normally does and boom it has impaction or constapation

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  8 лет назад

      What kind of pets do you keep? Axoltls are relatively easy to keep, most important thing is that the water temperature does not increase above ~22-23°C for longer periods. They like colder temps,~17-20°C are great. Everything else is really easy. :)

    You handled those critters real gently and that tank was very clean. How much of that clean tank are the snails responsible for vs the plants? LOL that one is like get out of my way and pushed the other guy out into the aquarium.

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  8 лет назад +4

      +Krazy Kids Axolotls are really "soft", so I try to handle them as few as possible and try to be careful. :)
      Well, snails eat many algae and most of the axolotl's faeces, while the plants filter the water and gather the remaining nutrients. So I guess you need both, to keep a tank clean in a natural way. However, I still have also a big filter on this tank, which runs at night.

      Aquarium and Terrarium Life That's really cool, How hard is it to keep the plants alive.

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  8 лет назад +3

      That's quite easy, as long as you have the right plants. If the tank gets enough light, the plants will grow. They get the nutritions out of the water or the ground. And teh axolotls fertilize them. :D

      Well, i think they have a way better chance to survive than the dodo, because they are also bred in many laboratories as they are really interesting for different research topics. But yes, generally the "hobbyists" are now the ones who keep the species alive. It's sad, but it's an example of how good captive breeding programmes can work, if animals are endangered in the wild.

      +zubpub yes, just make sure not to use gravel. only use sand or leave the bottom empty. but they need a hide and a few plants, real or fake.

    Hi, nice video. Can you tell me what kind of snails you keep with your axolotls? Do the Axo's eat them aswell? I'm in the process of setting up my own aquarium and would like some snails in there aswell to keep it clean. You don't use any filtrationsystem or pump for extra oxygen? Thanks you for your answer

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  8 лет назад +4

      +Tibor Kluppel I keep different snail species in my tanks, mostly a small rams-horn species (I think Planorbella duryi) and bladder snails (Physella acuta). You can see the snails I keep in my tanks in my macrography playlist ( ruclips.net/p/PLETIG8JUt5oQeJyZhzPf5TeXts_jAGstM ).
      The axolotls do eat the smaller snails. I use a normal external filter pump that runs ~8 hours per day (at night), I guess this increases the oxygen level a little.

    • @SwamiTibor
      @SwamiTibor 8 лет назад

      +Aquarium and Terrarium Life Thanks for your quick reply! So you hang the filter in at night, because in the clip its not showing? Would it be possible to do without an external filter and just refresh 1/3 or half the water each month? I don't like to look at a filter. I'm thinking of increasing the oxygen level with the use of waterweed

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  8 лет назад

      +Tibor Kluppel I have this filter always in the tank, it is external so you can only see the hosepipes at one end of the tank. It runs only at night. This should be possible too, if you don't put in many fish or so, that would make much dirt. The plants and the snails will keep the waterquality at a good level. It would be like a small pond, the water changes would replace rainfall.

    • @SwamiTibor
      @SwamiTibor 8 лет назад

      +Aquarium and Terrarium Life A that's it than. Because of the changeover you took the hoses out at at the end of the video you didn't put them in yet! That's why i thought you weren't using a filter. Thanks for the help. As soon as i have my own tank (in a few months) i will send you a pic.

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  8 лет назад

      Yes, you can just see them in the end, in last few seconds. :D

    I know this is like the 1000 comment but I would switch to sand or large smooth rocks.
    Edit: i read the desc. and i still disagree theres no such thing as "axolotl gravel", if it fits in their mouth, they cam swallow it and thats no bueno.

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  5 лет назад

      Swallowing substrate is not the problem. As long as the substrate can pass the digestive tract without harming it, it's no problem. And yes, there is so-called axogravel (sold by "aquaterratec"), which is completely fine for axolotls.

    The axolotls can eat the gravel that's in there and they can also become stressed about the snails and eat them as well

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  7 лет назад

      Yeah, please read the video description for gravel-information.
      Axolotls shall become stressed by snails? Well, maybe if there are a thousand snails per axolotl. However, snails are natural(!) food source for axolotls. Of course you should not use snails that could get stuck in the axolotl, but usually axolotls just suck the snails out of their shells.

    How often do you do water change? And do you have a filter? Also how do you oxygenate your tank?

    • @AquaTerra-Life
      @AquaTerra-Life  5 лет назад

      I exchange water one to two times per months, depends on the water parameters. There's an external eheim filter connected, which runs a few hours per day. Oxygenation is mainly done by the plants. In recent setups I also used air stones.
