People still line up to play with Laurie. We bay area folk are SO LUCKY to have her here, when she's not in the mountains. She writes, sings, plays, yodels, tells jokes, and carries the music we love. Thanks for the post, and THANKS LAURIE!
She sang that for me acapella after a house concert after I told her I loved her cover of that song. I melted and was honored and probably 3 shades of red.
I'm telling you what's the truth, this is THE best version of this song on RUclips! I love this woman's voice. Might she be an angel? I almost didn't recognize Sam Bush!!! He's a kid!
Thanks BluegrassLibrary for posting this great bluegrass number written by Melissa Monroe sung by Laurie Lewis. This is how bluegrass is supposed to be,simple humble words that hits the heart, thanks,Eric.
Ive only just come across Laurie Lewis, happened to see her on the front of Acoustic Guitar magazine, Im really glad i did, fantastic voice and musicality - have now ordered a few CDs from Amazon. Dont get exposed to enough of this in the UK, thank goodness for You Tube!!
Love the harmonies of all the singers together, Laurie's solos and the dobro on it...All So Beautiful. 💖Thank you for recording and Melissa Monroe for writing it. 💖
It is the most hauntingly beautiful song. It is elegantly played and sung. I understand it all too well. Thank you Melissa Monroe. Thanks for the post.
No one can beat Laurie at this song. She sings it as if she wrote this great song I get chills listening to her sing. The Harmony wasn't bad either. Jim Sullivan

playing upright bass is not Roy Huskey, Jr., it is Gene Libbea from Nashville Bluegrass Band. and yes, as has been already pointed out a while ago, the guitar player is David Grier.
Thursday nights. the Red Vest Pizza Parlor in El cerrito. Laurie and the Good Old Persons. they played for years there in the 70's. kick is, the joint would announce the pizza order numbers over a mike--during the songs!
First time I hav ever come across this lady - looks like I missed her in her prime. Her voice & song in general gets better as the song progresses. Her voice strains a little on the higher notes in recent performances.
+greekflatpicker I notice your request was ignored. Bummer. We always need to give credit where credit is due. Good for you; bad for bluegrass library.
I am going through and typing Amen on all the David Grier comments!! He is one of the most significant guitarist to grace the world of bluegrass and roots music!
@k4rotube Yes, I think you are right. Look at Nashville Bluegrass Band - Blue Train. There you can see him clearly. There are two bass players who are easy to recognize, Roy Huskey Jr and the way he moves his right arm and Mark Schatz who is jumping up and down.
Sometime between 1990 and 1993 - American Music Shop only ran that long. Laurie has gone grey in the intervening 25 years, and her voice has darkened a little. Good genes - she's at least 40 in this clip, but she looks and sounds 15 years younger.
Why bother comparing her voice to Alison Krauss? They're not even similar. You might compare Suzanne Cox to Krauss, but why Lewis? That's like comparing Vince Gill's singing to Rod Stewart's. And sandpaper? You gotta be kidding. Well, Rod Stewart's, maybe.

Less is so often More : who doesnt get a chill up and down the spine every time the three voices drop in volume as does the music behind them ???
She sang that for me acapella after a house concert after I told her I loved her cover of that song. I melted and was honored and probably 3 shades of red.
When harmonizing it's like one voice...always a pleasure to listen to Laurie Lewis and friends...

One of Laurie's finest !!!! Bluegrass at it's best!
Video excellant also.
She not only has a wonderful voice, she puts real emotion into her singing; not sing songy or cutsie like so many others.

A perfect lesson in bluegrass restraint…absolutely wonderful 😊

Ive only just come across Laurie Lewis, happened to see her on the front of Acoustic Guitar magazine, Im really glad i did, fantastic voice and musicality - have now ordered a few CDs from Amazon. Dont get exposed to enough of this in the UK, thank goodness for You Tube!!

Amazing

"Haven of mercy" is the very best song by Laurie - in my opinion... Sad song but with so much emotions
I have half of this on an old VHS but did not know the artist or song until now.
Very nice
Awesome.....
Gene Libbea on bass, David Grier on guitar. Great performance!
eu amo essa música.
That is NOT Roy Huskey playing bass. It's Gene Libbea. Thank you for posting this video. It was a pretty special show for me.

Her voice strains a little on the higher notes in recent performances.
great insight...yep she'd nail it...thanks for the suggestion..I'll give her a call tomorrow..
David Grier on guitar. Laurie sounds GREAT on this vid.
In the lineup, please mention the name of the guitar GOD great picker Mr. David Grier.
He's the best from the best.
+greekflatpicker I notice your request was ignored. Bummer. We always need to give credit where credit is due. Good for you; bad for bluegrass library.
+Flora Bunda thanks.
+greekflatpicker I thank you also. it's baffling how David Grier's name could have been left out.
@haytossr I was told and agree it is David Grier on Guitar.
great job Melissa would like
yep David Grier deserves an honourable mention with his guitar licks in there as well as the solid bass playing of Gene Libbea on bass.
We have:
Laurie Lewis, Violin
Alan O'Bryant, Banjo
Sam Bush, Mandolin
Jerry Douglas, Dobro
Roy Huskey Jr., Bass
Who is playing guitar?
Does anyone have a video of her version of When the Cactus is in bloom??? I'm lookin' everywhere for it and I can't find it!
No Kiddin'... She's awesome. I see young Jerry Douglas and Sam Bush. Anyone know what year this is from?
Thanks for sharing
The video is pretty fuzzy, but I believe the bass player is Gene Libbea.
A great play off of and tribute to Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky,"
anyone know the date of this video? thanks.
Please post DATES of performances,
Sometime between 1990 and 1993 - American Music Shop only ran that long. Laurie has gone grey in the intervening 25 years, and her voice has darkened a little. Good genes - she's at least 40 in this clip, but she looks and sounds 15 years younger.
My guess is that the bassplayer is Tom Grey from the Seldom Scene and the Country Gentlemen.
Wow, what a gal!! She's got the whole package.
@dobol52
Is The Blue Moon Still Shining - IBMA 1992
Patty is great!!!
@haytossr Bass player is not Roy...sorry. :-(
BLUEGRASS LIBRARY: PLEASE HONOR A TWO-YEAR-OLD REQUEST TO PUT GUITARIST DAVID GRIER'S NAME IN THE DESCRIPTION!
Amen!!
@m7lists But Alison no longer sings bluegrass. She turned her back on us.
.... (Continued from previous ) Voice strains a little on higher notes on recent recordings!
You forgot David Grier on guitar and that ain't Roy Huskey... that's Gene Libbea, ain't it?
Seriously! David is ......well.....probably not from this planet!!!
Yes that is Gene on bass...
Right on both counts!!
Why bother comparing her voice to Alison Krauss? They're not even similar. You might compare Suzanne Cox to Krauss, but why Lewis? That's like comparing Vince Gill's singing to Rod Stewart's.
And sandpaper? You gotta be kidding. Well, Rod Stewart's, maybe.
forgot the guitar player, think it might be david grier?
AWESOME AWESOME! Do you think of each other when the moon is FULL....
Patty Loveless would do this one greatly!
Comparing Laurie Lewis with Patty Loveless is just an insult to Laurie. Patty Loveless ruins anything she touches. That's my opinion.
