Hot water bottle. Definitely, I'm Scots, always lived in Scotland buy in the winter, even though I have central heating I use a hot water bottle. Actually, mine is called a pig. It's stoneware. I Inherreted it from my gran. It's 120 years old and it's brilliant as it radiates heat in bed.
Oh wow, I don't think I've ever even seen a hot water bottle than old! Maybe I will pass mine down to the next generation too! .D So far I am only buying them for all my continental friends - it still baffles me they are not a thing back in my home country. They are seriously missing out!
Ha ha really?! What about a heating pad that plugs in and shuts off on timer? I guess I haven’t tried the hot pad water heater sooo I don’t know! Ha ha I will get one in Minneapolis Minnesota we get freezing cold 🥶 temps! Also suggest spiced tea 🍵 spiced foods, exercise to sweat 30 minutes 3 times a week! Weightlifting 🏋🏼♀️ and I have a infrared sauna in my garage. My ancestors from Finland 🇫🇮
When I moved back to Scotland from China, one of the first things I noticed was the bird song. I hadn't even realised I'd missed it, you kind of just take it for granted when it's there.
Ooooh so you do think it's actually more audible/present here? I wasn't sure if I just wasn't totally oblivious to the birdsong while living in Prague. But here it indeed feels like you're always surrounded by it!
Oh, I've moved here recently too! My super necessary purchase was a fleece vest to put under the thinnish windproof jacket... Which I still wear in early June... Both... Over a sweater... Yuck.... A waterproof jacket with a decent hood is a must... We have up on umbrellas soon enough here... And don't forget to chuck your stilettos, there is no way you will climb up or down a cobblestoned hilly road... Not gracefully anyway...
Haha, absolutely. To quote my little sister "How the hell does one arrive to a date looking polished in Edinburgh?!" - to which I usually say "It's cabs or nothing." Also congrats on making the move! Hope you're enjoying the city apart from bitey wind and ankle twisting cobble stones!!
Hot water bottles with a cover are actually dangerous, since if (or "when") they leak, it is less noticeable, and there have been many cases of people getting badly burned because they don't notice until it is too late.
Thank you so much for this informative video! In the beginning you stated that you lived in haunted cold homes and it would be interesting to hear more about that experience!👻👻👻
Finally catching up on videos I’m so late! All of your videos are always helpful especially for small details of people wouldn’t think of. I’m sure plenty of people watch for vacation ideas but for those that are moving, the smallest thing can be helpful.

Hi! Me and my boyfriend moved here in autumn of 2019. Most of the things you mentioned in this video are the things we now need and have in our lives, too. We are Croatians btw. About vitamin D and lack of summer - we also bought SAD lamp. And interesting thing is that in Croatia for last couple of years we would wear summer and winter clothes. But here I wear spring/autumn outfits all the time. And I'm allways cold.
Yes yes yes! I did realise that too - that I can wear the same clothes all year round haha. 20/21 winter mixed it up for me a bit though, it was SO COLD AND TOUGH that it was the first time when I wasn't able to wear leather jackets or warm skirts, I was just in an arctic expedition mode most of the time -___- eek ! So maybe as you're settled in Scotland longer and longer you will get to experience winters that feel much milder .)
Good info, thanks. Interesting with the hot water bottle ....I’ve only ever used lots of quilts/blankets or electric blankets in bed to keep warm or “hand warmers” packets you slip into your mittens or pockets in the colder months (can find in hardware stores, convenience store counters, etc). I’ll remember the water bottle next time. Oh, and I use Wise too, a couple years now, love them. ✅🤗 Good video, thank you.

A mountain bike. I never expected to ride a bike in hilly Edinburgh but a few months later, I can't live without one. It's easier to go up and down the steep roads on a bike than on foot, especially when carrying a heave bag of grocery stuff :))
@@willzhao1432 this is brilliant! I'm English and my fiance is Canadian and we have this argument all the time haha! The left side IS the right side. Also, we're new to Edinburgh and EVERYONE is on bikes so we think we'll join the gang!
@@Kakibot If you're Czech, the reason you drive on the right is because of Hitler! More seriously, get a bike and your bird book and cycle up the Water of Leith pathway. You might see a Heron!
I'd heard about the hot water bottles because I had a patient that was English and he used one quite a lot. I'm wondering why the hot water bottles instead of a heating pad? Is it just so you can sleep with it and you can't sleep with a heating pad? Or an electric blanket - why are hot water bottles popular over electric blankets? Also, as an American, the small things you can do with private healthcare to give you a leg up are SO CHEAP (though I guess everything is comparatively cheaper lol). It's amazing that you can do bloodwork for 40 quid like every 6 months and your PCP can just follow-up with you if you need to but you also get your results?! I wish we had something like that because we have to go in, get the bloodwork ordered, go to a lab, then go back in to get the results (sometimes we can look at the results online and we don't necessarily have to go back in if it's just for blood test results) and it all costs money! Again, everything is comparative, but even the private healthcare system is so nice there...so glad I'm moving soon (and will be helping out in the healthcare system) 🙂
Thanks for the tips. I like videos like this and I always make a mental note of what I hear. I've been wanting to make the move there from Australia for a few yrs now. A Co worker won $26K once so it can happen, :P. One thing I picked up from video about moving is making sure to see a doctor soon after you arrive for erm, a social security type number? Oh dear I've forgotten. Maybe I should write these things down, lol..
Once you make the move you'll figure it all out! It's not like you can start doing much fun stuff before going through that check list of bureaucracy first anyway! .D
