I know it's a fact because I live near the German border where these things happened. In fact I was investigating it for a book, but it made me so sick that I had to stop, esspecially when I found out that the people living in the late middle ages think just the same as the people do right now.
Totally shocking to discover that.
It did happen in some regions but most of the time it was sectarian or biggoted witchunts against religious minorities ACCUSED OF WITCHCRAFT when most of these people slaughtered were not at all involved in witchcraft or the occult. Like today as you said. Some people will use any excuse they can find.
Sadly we have not learnt anything you are 100% correct. The last 3 years have been a real eye opener.
It is shocking and would make a person feel ill. It's basically picking on someone vulnerable, rather than let them be.
...imposing todays ethics, morals and political views onto historic situations is a very unenlightened habit, it's no different from going to a foreign country and imposing your sensibilities onto their culture. This is not to say everything is fine and dandy always, but doing that is a very good way to completely fail to notice all the intricacies of that time that were very different from today.
[Also, in doing that, we frame the victims in a way making them "just like us today" ...When that may not be the case, an actual witch in the past, a shaman or such like would have very likely scared the living daylights out of todays self-proclaimed "witch" and done things they would never support... or its very possible, because it was a different time, a different place, a different culture.]
@@JesseP.Watson No. People have not changed. They think the same, talk the same, act the same. That is going on for at least a thousand years, since it was written down. It went the same with the inquisition, the persecition of jews, the witch hunts and so on and so fort. O have been. I've been studying big piles of very old court records.
And I am 100% certain what has happened will happen again. The signs are clear and everywhere. The patterns of history repeat themselves. I wrote in 2017 "Global Awakening part 1, the master of destruction." Because I thought a massive shift in consciousness was going to happen. But I was wrong. We are in the final stages of Kali Yuga now. But the misery and chaos we see today is just the beginning.

On Sunday when you were talking about Telescopes I was wishing that I had one. Today there was one in the charity shop window for £20. I might go back and get it tomorrow after I investigate the lenses and magnification. I don't want to waste cash on a silly toy.
If the lens is good get it. It's always great when you see something in a charity shop like that. If something is gone next day I just think "it wasn't meant to come my way". But it might still be there, and down in price. 👍
@@finolaomurchu8217 I'm 90% sure it will still be there. I live on a rough estate on the wrong side of town and the charity shop is part of a tiny local high st. Its not in the city centre.

Informative stuff Thomas, thank you, it is interesting that the vast majority of those killed for witchcraft were actually Christians, witchcraft being a convenient accusation indeed for opposing ideologies to use. The fact that many of those who held witch trials were very educated men if another interesting element, one that can be quite baffling, very well educated Presbyterians in Scotland using practices like “Pricking” to discover if some poor unfortunates were witches. Many if not most committing the terrible crime of being a herbalist or a midwife. I do think you let the Roman Church off the hook a bit lightly (I suppose I would) long before the Reformation the Catholic Church persecuted witches. In 1326 Pope John XXII issued the bull Super illius specula which condemned witchcraft as a heresy to be punished by the inquisition. As I am sure you are aware Rome was still executing witches into the 19th century. Thanks again Thomas, especially for your honesty.
Very interesting. Some twenty-odd years ago I did my history degree dissertation on English witchcraft trials, which showed just how rare death sentences were (with a few notable "hot spots" to the opposite). Of course in England witches were hanged, not burned, as was the case in Scotland and Europe. I did uncover some evidence to suggest a connection between witchcraft and Jewish communities but the information was patchy.
Thanks Thomas. There's a book called God's Philosophers, and it's mentioned here and there that it was in absolute last resort to sentence someone to the fire . The church was interested only in converting every one to the religion and stop mob justice . It was the mobs that did this sort of thing most of the times . The beginning of the inquisition was ti investigate these cases and put a stop to mobs justice .

Thomas, what’s your thoughts on the doppelgänger phenomenon? I knew celebrities had lookalikes but it wasn’t until I saw my own mother’s double that I thought how weird it really is! Very real thing going on. The Hollywood cult industry has ways of recruiting clones to confuse the law enforcement who may be looking for them. Witch burnings happened, I have some Slavic language books that go into incredible detail about old pagan practices (mainly, those in Bohemia). Otomar Dvořák is an excellent author on these pagan subjects, but nothing of his works been translated into English AFAIK. But there is plenty of evidence that it went on, if you look at Frauenkirche in Nürnberg, for example, the reason that church was built in 1349 was b/c there was a pogrom against Jews, they burned the Jews alive and then built a new marketplatz and the Frauenkirche on top of the dead Jews. Church and marketplace is still there today. This kind of stuff went on quite routinely, you can find lots of evidence. As far as their being "no trials" and "just accusations", all I will say is that in the current political climate you can see much the same, those who participate in "demonic" or what-not activity, which is what witch burnings are going after, are always extremely ... "prideful" .. can we say? Very very proudly flying flags of certain colors and so forth. "Identifying" these people and working through "if they're guilty" usually isn't very hard. It certainly wouldn't be very hard to do today, these people are very very very "proud" to tell you exactly what their beliefs and leanings are, hence why not much time was spent on "proving" guilty, it wasn't necessary, that wasn't the "hard" part. There were deep religious reasons for why they were burned, it mostly centered on trying to make sure the demon didn't jump into a "new host" at the death of the individual. The "we'll torture you, and if you confess, we'll kill you and if you don't confess, we'll still kill you" is designed to elucidate this.. a human will quickly confess under torture, he's still guilty, but he confessed. A demon-possessed individual, on the other hand will never confess, hence why this technique was used. This practice of burning demon-possessed people to stop the demon from "jumping" into a new host is ancient and goes back into far antiquity, it's of ancient pre-Christian origin.
God help any poor aul one, without family, with a couple of pets, and a wart on her face. But it's interesting you were let be in Catholic areas during this phase.
